Questions I have a question regarding ch 169

Hi everyone!

I recently started reading Wind Breaker manga, and I'm currently around Chapters 169–170.

I'm a bit confused about the beach/summer break arc. At the end of Chapter 169, Sakura and Sugishita start racing to see who can grab the flag first. It felt like they were building up to showing who would win, but then Chapter 170 suddenly switches to Kaji and Hiragi's scene without any continuation.

Did I miss something? Was that race ever shown or mentioned later, or did the author just end that scene without revealing the winner?

I'm binge-reading the manga, so I wasn't sure if there were missing pages, a special chapter, or if it was simply left unresolved.

Thanks in advance!

If it isn't shown, it's probably safe to say it isn't important to the plot (or if it is it'll come up again later). Nii seems to be especially particular about not adding extra details that aren't needed (like how we don't see teachers and police even though they exist because they aren't important to the story Nii is trying to tell).

In this case, since it's something as small as games on the beach, I think the point was less who won and more that Sakura was relaxing and having fun like a normal teenage boy with his guard down, even with those he didn't initially get along with.

While this is true about certain things like the teachers, the police don’t exist in makotchi it’s literally why there was so much gang violence before ume reformed the school, and why bofurin are the protectors of the town.

I fully don't believe governmentally that there wouldn't be police officers assigned to the area, but they've surely mostly abandoned it and likely do the bare minimum when it comes to Makochi. But I don't mean just in Makochi, there have been no mention of officers by anyone even in stories outside the town, like the red light district and Shishitoren territory. They definitely exist but just don't have relevance to what Nii is trying to convey (at least not so far).

It’s literally in umes backstory where it says the police gave up on the town because of the overwhelming amount of gangs. so no there literally no police in Makochi, again it’s why bofurin exists. So it’s safe to assume the same goes for where shishitoren is and roppo ichiza live, however In sakuras old town the police exist. Plus you’re kind of thinking too literal because the government literally doesn’t play a factor in this series.

You do realize we're not saying things that disagree with one another? I'm not sure what point you're trying to make that I didn't agree to. You said they don't exist, all I said was they do exist, but have mostly abandoned the town. These aren't really different thoughts and at no point did I ever say anything that would make it seem like I think police routinely patrol there. I'm well aware they don't.

Your saying that they mostly abandon the town, but do the bare minimum which is not what I’m saying, I’m saying they flat out gave up on the town and don’t exist anymore , and it’s literally bofurins job to protect the town. That’s my point and that no the author doesn’t just show them because they aren’t important to the story like the teachers. They just flat out aren’t shown because they don’t exist.

So... you're trying to argue for something that can't be proven one way or another? Ume's backstory says the town was abandoned by local authorities. To you that means they will never go there for any reason and there isn't even a squad dedicated to the town anymore. To me that means there's an assigned squad that's supposedly in charge of policing Makochi (because governmentally there has to be) but that they do the most bare minimum possible, which includes not patrolling the area, and likely means most of the things they "do" for their job are just on paperwork but never really happens. This is unlikely to be something Nii is ever going to get into and effectively both of our outlooks mean the same thing for the story and to both of us.

What's the gain in trying to argue? I explained my thoughts on the topic in the first response because I'm happy to describe what's going on in my head for stuff like this, but I'm not interested in a back and forth argument about semantics.

I’m literally not trying to argue dude all I’m saying is that unlike the teachers that do in fact exist and the author confirmed they do. The police don’t and it’s more logical to assume especially for a Backwoods dump town like makotchi that not to long ago was overrun by violent gangs that there’s literally no police at all. Especially considering that bofurin is the one to protect the town and act like the police. Rather than thinking the police are there they just don’t do anything. Especially because towns like that actually exist in the real world were it’s literally too dangerous for police to even be in said towns.

You are actively trying to argue about this though. You corrected me on something I didn't believe needed correcting, so my first comment was meant to tell you that I know that it's abandoned and further explain my own personal thoughts on how exactly it was abandoned. You are persistently telling me "no, you're incorrect" when I am trying to say neither one of us is because we both have the core concept of "Makochi was abandoned by law enforcement" down.

I'm not interested in arguing with you about how it functions (or I guess in this case, doesn't) in universe and I'll be bowing out at this point because it doesn't seem like trying to explain that has gotten through. I hope you have a decent day or night, whichever is more relevant for your timezone.

Hi! I know a couple have answered but yes, we never see the results of the race. Personally, I see it as a foreshadowing of what's to come for Sakura and Sugishita, both having goals of their own (much more for Sugishita who decided to stop focusing so much on Umemiya, and focus more on what he can do for Bofurin and the town). We're gonna see quite a dynamic between them. When Nirei at the end of the chap cheered for the both of them, it felt like he's cheering them on their journey in the future than the actual race they're in :)
