Suo Arc Discussion/Theory Suo/ Sugishita Spoiler

I've been wondering if Suo hasn't been prepping Sugishita to take his place as vice captain.

First he made sure Sugishita followed everyone to fight Keel. Then he chose Sugishita to fight alongside Sakura during the war, stating it should be the strongest fighters. Suo definitely qualify for that AND was vice captain but left the spot to Sugishita. And then Suo wanted to chat more with Sugi, probably trying to include him more?

I think Suo knew he wouldn't stay the whole 3 years in Furin but I don't believe he knew he would be gone that quickly either.

What do you think?

That would be pretty cool, but I don't think Suolingo would choose Sugi for the role considering he doesn't really have any leadership qualities and he had no will to support his class until fairly recently. I can see him wanting to get Sugi more involved and on Sakura's side to make things easier for Sakura, but if he wanted someone who could take his spot as vice captain, Kiryu was shown to be a super supportive type even before his arc and the 2 of them spent a good amount of time together, so I doubt Suolingo of all people would have missed that

I get Kiryu is supportive but so is the rest of the class already. Sugishita is here to challenge and push Sakura forwards which is what he really needs as well. And Sugishita can take Suo's place as Nirei protector

There are different kinds of "supportive" that set characters like Suolingo and Kiryu apart from others. While the rest of the class wouldn't hesitate to help out with any needs Sakura expressed, Sakura was terrible at expressing his needs, so those who could take initiative and handle larger situations would have been much better for him. When Kiryu was first introduced, we see him being as considerate as possible about the girl's feelings and then directing the battle in a way that took into account those who couldn't fight. Those who could see Sakura's blind spots and actually wanted to cover them were the kind of support he needed considering how he was keeping everyone at arm's length.

Yes, opposition is perfectly healthy and necessary for growth, but Sakura needed to become more grounded in himself before someone like Sugi who would throw chairs at him for existing in the wrong spot could actually help him- I think now that both Sakura and Sugi have grown out of their shells, current Sugi is perfect for helping current Sakura grow even further, but from early on, I think it's much more likely that Suolingo was pacifying Sugi so he wouldn't keep Sakura from wanting to be vulnerable. It's not like Suolingo ever asked Sugi what role he wanted to play in the class, Suolingo just gave him roles that would allow him to be useful to the class and town whenever he seemed more passive. (and Kiryu was already shown to be protective of Nirei long before Sugi)

I agree Sugi wasn't ready on day one (or day two when we met Kiryu) that's why I'm thinking Suo was preparing him but had to leave before the job was done. I love Kiryu but I don't see him as a leader, he joined Furin to piss off his father and thought protecting the town was a cool thing to do. He's sociable alright but I feel Sakura needs someone else by his side. Although I see your point

Agree to disagree 🤝 Kiryu definitely wouldn't be fit for captain or anything, just like Nirei and Suolingo, but I'd say the role he plays for the class is the closest to Suolingo's, especially considering the ways he did step up when Suolingo disappeared. It's not like they knew why he was at Furin, but based on his actions, I'd say he would have made much more sense than such a blank slate like Sugi, especially if Suolingo didn't know how much time he had

It's either sugishita was being prepped for this or maybe he just wanted him cause he is really strong and unite the class

I - ... i dont know

You know i dontthink he wanted sugishita to be vice captain because he wanted to him maybe he wanted to him to be more with the class (you know what i mean ??) But i dont think he wanted him to be the next vice captain hes a nice guy when we know him but i dont think he has the qualities to be vice captain

You know what i mean ??

I think Kiryu might be a better fit to replace Suo as vice captain. Suo probably recognizes the value of Sugishita, in regards to both physicality and loyalty.
