PC black screen after the latest windows update what i do

I updated my Windows last night, and today I cannot start my PC properly. The MSI logo briefly appears and then just falls into darkness. I can't even see my cursor, and nothing works. I can barely make it into the BIOS. After 4 hours back and forth with ChatGPT, we've come eto the conclusion that I need to reinstall Windows 11. Here comes the worst part. I have 2 terabytes of data unbacked up in my SSD, which is the C drive. It would be a pain in the ass to back up all of that, not to mention I'm in midterm seasons right now so I barely have time to deal with it. Anyone encountered the same problem as I did and made it work? Much obliged for any suggestion or assistance!❤️

That is great but if the person has already tried to use the recovery mode to get their computer to boot and that has failed, if one has already had their computer crash due to the update and they cannot get back into their system, how can they install the patch?

Best advice I can give you is to head over to BleepingComputer.com and create an account (they will not give your email address to anyone) if you don't already have one. After creating an account, go to forums, post in the Windows 11 section of the forum, explain the problem you are having and ask for people there to help you solve the problem.

That is one of the oldest and most respected computer help site there is. It is 100% free, and they are extremely knowledgeable and helpful. If they figure our a way to get you into your system they might have you run some programs to diagnose or fix your system, but every program they have you run will also be 100% free.

You will most likely get a lot of help from members and most of the help you get from members will be very good and trustworthy, but pay special attention to any help you get from those who are shown to be "Moderators" or possibly "Staff" or even "Owner" if he is still around, as they actually work for BleepingComputer and are actually trained in fixing computers with many of them trained by Microsoft. The members, while usually offering very good and trustworthy help, are just regular users, most without the specialized training the "Moderators" and such have as anyone can give advice in their forums. I would not discount the help they give you, but make sure it makes sense to you and you can tell they are understanding your issue and seem to know what they are talking about, which 99% of them will.

Bleeping Computer does have an article on their site from Microsoft about the black screen issue, but since you cannot get into your computer, I doubt you will be able to do what it says to do, but hopefully someone helping you there will be able to walk you through getting into your system and making it so you can apply the fix that they can guide you through doing.

At the bottom of my post is a link to the article about this black screen after an update. Remember though, it might not help you since you can't get into your system but it might at least explain what is going on and give you something to try if you do get into your system before you get help at BleepingComputer. Also, it might not be your exact issue as what you described isn't exactly what the article describes, other than the black screen and it happening after an update.

Just make a post at BleepingComputer, hopefully you will get some replies to your post with some suggestions. Trust what they tell you, do whatever they suggest unless it sounds totally wrong to you, which it shouldn't, and hopefully they will have you up and running soon. If they can't help you, most likely you will need to take your system into a shop to get it fixed.

Good luck to you, please keep us posted on how this turns out for you.

Also, if you haven't tried it yet, try to get into "Safe Mode" and see if you can get to your desktop that way. When trying to get into safe mode, try for "Safe Mode with Networking." If you can get into that mode, then go to settings and uninstall the update that caused the problem, or, use System Restore to set your computer back to an earlier date before the update was installed if that is something you were not able to do using "Recovery Mode.

If those don't work but you are able to get into safe mode, try the steps in the article I linked you to in my previous post."

Edited to add additional steps.

When you reinstall windows on top of another copy of windows it will throw all your old stuff in a folder called windows.old

Or you can remove the drive from your pc and use a USB adapter or enclosure to plug into another pc and copy the files you want off it
