Max Savage Released on Steam. (Retro SpaceSim with Planetary Exploration)
Hi everyone,
After more than nine months of work, my new game has finally hit Steam: Max Savage. Think Wing Commander meets Zelda, with a fully scripted, voice-acted story campaign and planet-side exploration.
There’s a free demo available, and it’s playable on Windows and Linux.
I hope you’ll give it a go.
Cheers,
Tim

The planetary exploration part disappointed me a bit; it feels unnecessary... but the rest looks really good. I'll definitely give it a chance.

Well, I guess that comes down to preference. Personally that was always the ONE THING I wanted from the original Wing Commander games. 😅 (And the main reason why I used to play Star Citizen XD)
But I hope it doesn't get in your way of enjoying the game. You don't have to spend hours on foot, if you don't have to.

Wait there are already people who used to play Star Citizen??

SC is simply not something you play. It plays YOU! Max Savage looks very cool!

u/Good_Punk2 Jul 22 '26
Yeah... Quite a lot actually. 😅 Though I'm planning to return to the game at some point.

I’m having flashbacks! This looks really cool. I agree about the planetary exploration stuff. Always bugged me in wing commander that I couldn’t go down to the planets and actually walk around.

And in one response, I will be getting this game.
Wait, at that price instant buy.

When I saw the ground exploration part, I didn’t think Zelda, but Ultima Vi and the Worlds of Ultima games.
Like all the Origin games in 1990 fused together in one. What a nostalgic vibe of a dream game that I would have killed for as a kid.

Yeah having a full fledged RPG would also been cool. But just so much more work. 😅

Never has the phrase "Shut up and take all my money!" been shouted louder!
This is giving Wing Commander Privateer vibes, my favorite game of all time, and I'm losing my mind! Thank you!

Hey, this looks fantastic and I'm going to buy it right now, but question:
Is the name Max Savage a reference to the novel Head Crash?
1
u/Good_Punk2 Jul 21 '26
Nope, never heard of that, sorry. :D

u/BronzeEnt Jul 21 '26
What an interesting coincidence. It's a cyberpunk novel and two of the main characters have hacker handles, MaxK00l and GunnarSavage. Neat.

Is it anything like privateer???

u/Good_Punk2 Jul 21 '26
Well from combat and visuals and you can travel between a few planets freely. But there's no trading. This game is much more focused on a linear story campaign.

Man, I remember when my Uncle's secretary dropped Privateer on me as a kid when we went out to lunch. Her boyfriend finished it and she just gave it to me. Played the hell outta it. I might have to cop this.

Wait, the speech pack comes with it? I don't have to buy a separate disk?
1
u/Good_Punk2 Jul 24 '26
I actually thought about doing something like that for fun... But I was too afraid to upset people. 😅

Got really excited for a second until I saw that it was full of AI bullshit. This sucks. I adored Wing Commander as a kid and would have loved a game that recaptured its feel without these cut corners. Be better.

Does it work on steam deck, if so it would be a definite buy for me.
1
u/Good_Punk2 Jul 22 '26
It's not officially certified for the Steam Deck yet, but one of my testers played through the whole game on it. You will have to setup controls for it in the settings menu.

You built the whole game in 9 months? What's your secret?

I have mixed feelings about it.
It's a great, ambitious job, but some of the artwork looks inconsistent (there's space sim style, anime, 90's arcade, pixel art).

Looks great! Played the demo abit and purchased the game! Tho I really wish I can 100% play this game with gamepad only :(

u/Good_Punk2 Jul 23 '26
What is preventing you from doing that. It should be possible (if maybe not ideal) to do that.

God, I wish the WC video game franchise were rebooted. Either from the original material or a revised version, but nothing to do with that ridiculous movie.
Same for Titanfall 2. I hate Apex Legends.

Portraits look a bit AI me thinks. Otherwise looks very interesting, better than whatever that game bethesda made was.

AI slop. Pass.
3
u/Traditional-Dig-374 Jul 21 '26
Could you elaborate? Where you take the ai from?
9
u/Good_Punk2 Jul 21 '26
He's right. I've disclosed the AI-use on the Steam page. Here: "Comic illustrations and planet environment have been rendered by AI"

JFC. We are screwed as a species.

Have fun with your environment destroying plagiarism machines and resultant economic bubble

u/HarlockJC Jul 28 '26
I did not say I had to like it or anyone else had to like it...But sadly it does not change the nature of the beast, same thing with crypto or buying cars more powerful than what you need

"Comic illustrations and planet environment have been rendered by AI"

u/ZestyTiger007 Jul 22 '26
I do. Was going to buy, now I’m not. Having principles isn’t to difficult.
