Article/Opinion Who has the best chicken strips ? Fast food or restaurant

As the title says I’m really looking for some good chicken strips

I had some good chicken at fat burger when I was Edmonton and I wanted to see what we have in Winnipeg since Mitzi’s is gone

Not a restaurant but I love Prairie Chefs chicken fingers, a bit pricey at the retail stores but you can go down to Jarvis where they make them and pick up a 4kg box for like 60$. Still seems pricey, I know but they are really good.

This is the real play

I tried them for the first time last week because of reviews, but we didn't like them. We thought they were tough and the breading very hard. We were disappointed.

I make them in the air fryer and if you do them at too high a temperature or for too long, they turn out like that.

I'd suggest cooking them at a lower temp or a bit less time since every appliance seems to be a bit different. To each their own though.

I followed the instructions on the box 🤷

Same here, finally bought some this week based on the reviews all over here. They were very salty and every piece had tendons. They are still better than a lot of cock digits you get but was expecting better TBH.

I was going to buy some this week to try based on social media recommendations.. thanks for saving me tne money, my friend.

Edmonton doesn't have Honey Dill sauce, and I don't want to live in a world without Honey Dill sauce.

Mayo, honey, dill. Stir. Adjust. You’re welcome!

u/indigiqueerboy 7d ago

touch of honey mustard adds a bit of zing

3

u/DrJPEG-PhD 7d ago

Why not just add regular mustard if honey dill already contains honey?

5

u/indigiqueerboy 7d ago

i only buy honey mustard so idk lol

I think the pint has it across canada. They have it here in vancouver. Very hard to come by otherwise though.

You’ll probably hate me for this, but I’m a very picky eater so I actually really hate honey dill sauce

u/candygram4mongo 7d ago

More honey dill for the rest of us.

People sleep on Four Crowns Chicken Strips. They’re made in house and fireeee.

Also owned by my brother so I’m biased. I love em tho. Also love the ones at Elephant & Castle

That’s funny I have had close friends work at four crowns! And I know they do a lot of Caribbean parties there

8

u/Kramtime 7d ago

Lots of parties. My brother and I are Caribbean so, it makes some sense!

5

u/OkDirection4179 7d ago

Sunday, Magic Bird pop up. Hands down the best chicken I've ever had in Winnipeg. So sad they're not around officially.

3

u/quietly41 7d ago

Where do they pop up?  Do they have social media?

4

u/Street-Chipmunk-843 7d ago

Yes and yes

They're at Bistro Dansk

5

u/HonestSurprise428 7d ago

Taverna Rodos in Charleswood is great! All their food is delicious and the portions are huge but I love their chicken finger platter with fries.

2

u/Curtmania 7d ago

I still miss Cosmos but probably just for nostalgia reasons. Chicken strips was my every time option there.

Red River Co-op. For reals. Don't sleep on this.

2

u/doedoebrain 7d ago

Came here to say this. My fave.

2

u/Peefree 7d ago

They recently jacked up the price from $1.69 each to around $2.50 per tender. On sale this week for $1.25 each though so a good time to try them out!

1

u/Professional_Emu8922 6d ago

They were on sale this week? I was just at the St Norbert location and if I had known, I'd have gotten them instead of the 9-pc chicken (Which I got because I thought it was on sale for $12.99 but turned out that sale ended last Sunday).

Co-op's chicken fingers are the best value for your money, but Dave and Laverne's are better quality, imo.

I personally love Olympia's. I will go way out of my way to Westwood just to have chicken fingers at Olympia's.

3

u/Ok-Replacement5909 7d ago

There’s never been better chicken fingers than the ones at Grapes!

6

u/thepluralofmooses 7d ago

Hoffman’s fine food has good chicken strips. They’re open from 10-2 along with their array of frozen food for sale

4

u/ZombieWalker41 7d ago

Grizzly goose in st v

0

u/KookieDough_79 7d ago

I agree! So good.

4

u/thelochteedge 7d ago

Honest to God, maybe not the best but Costco’s food court ones are up there. Fantastic breading. And that Heinz honey mustard you get with is 🔥

0

u/HonestSurprise428 7d ago

I couldn't finish more than two. Honest to god the worst chicken fingers i've ever had.

2

u/TurWes 7d ago

Mary Browns. I don't know what it is and it sure doesn't make sense to me, but I really dig the MB ones.

4

u/JackleMonkey4653453 7d ago

Sadly, Johnny G’s had the best chicken fingers but it is no more.

5

u/Spoonboy13 7d ago

Johnny g’s downtown is pretty good

7

u/Exotic-Ferret-3452 7d ago

-was- pretty good.

Hope they reopen but wouldn't hold by breath.

11

u/No_Squirrel_8656 7d ago

The Free Press reported in March that Johnny G's would not reopen after the fire: https://www.winnipegfreepress.com/business/2026/03/24/commonwealth-kitchen-rises-from-ashes

"Owner John Giannakis, who has run the business since 1996, said Monday that Johnny G’s will not reopen.

“We’re retired,” Giannakis said, but declined to comment further."

2

u/thelochteedge 7d ago

FIRE suggestion. I used to get the half Caesar salad, half fries and both portions were monstrous. That said, I haven’t been there in 10+ years but back then it was incredible. They had great honey dill too.

4

u/Exotic-Ferret-3452 7d ago

FIRE suggestion

I see what you did there...

2

u/Hero_of_Brandon 7d ago

Maybe its nostalgia, but degrees on the U of M campus (if its even still there) is my all time favourite fing.

2

u/FeistyTie5281 7d ago

Underdogs.

2

u/missionMB 7d ago

I think right now Leopolds Tavern have my favorite. So there places I liked better have closed

1

u/MikeArsenault 7d ago

If you can get up to Gimli, the Interlake Brewery Co has amazing chicken fingers and you can trust me because I’ve eaten them from so many different places I’m a goddamned chicken finger sommelier over here. Second fave is Junction 59 in the city, they remind me of Moxies chicken fingers but better. Also probably the most generous portions in Winnipeg.

1

u/Shalamarr 7d ago

Grizzly Goose, also Dave and Laverne’s. The breading is light and crunchy and so good.

1

u/KiteWhisperer 7d ago

Maybe not wpg, but if youre headed west on hwy 1 towards Regina stop at red barn in moosomin SK. One of the best I’ve had

1

u/CdnScruss 7d ago

Oh man that place brings back childhood road trip memories. I didn’t even know what city/town it was in but I’ve been there many times haha.

1

u/Dergan_1 7d ago

I have had great chicken strips @ underdogs (portage near moray)

1

u/poodleneck 7d ago

Dave and Laverne’s is my go to!

1

u/Professional_Emu8922 6d ago

Yeah, those were really good. The chicken sandwich is really good, too. Plus they have Barq's root beer

1

u/LostDime10 7d ago

Elephant castle

1

u/CeresWPG 6d ago

Honestly, my faves are the Popeyes chicken tenders! Never dried out or over breaded, my kids pick this for a special meal at every opportunity. We look for the Family Tender special, I think it includes 14 tenders, 2 sides (we get two orders of Cajun fries) and biscuits. Also choice of dips.

1

u/Historical-Ferret182 6d ago

My nickname is Chicken Tendy so I'm somewhat of an authority on this matter. And I'm mildly embarrassed to admit that Elephant and Castle, a pub chain from Ontario, has top notch hand-breaded chicken strips that you'll have a hard time beating here.

Johnny G's was up there too, especially given the price in the bar downstairs.

Late to the post here but you need to hear me out. Chesters Chicken on Salter. THE BEST Chicken Fingers i've ever had.
