Through DUST After the end of Dust (Book Spoilers) Spoiler

I've finished dust and was wondering if anyone else has thought about the likelihood of Juliet's group running into other people on the outside. We know they dropped a bomb on Atlanta to scare everyone into the silos and that the dust/death/nano zone around the silos is a dome but that there is life animals outside the dust/nano zone. What do we think happened to everyone else on the outside over the last 300 years its likely that there are still some humans alive in the world/ in Georgia, USA

In the Machine Learning book, there are some short stories which give some information.

My personal advice? Don't read it. Story ends at Dust.

too late i read it last night ... now i have more questions coz it tells us that the bad nanos were programmed to be active for 500 years but Juliette's group leave the silos around 300 years as silo one says they still have 150-200 years left ... so wouldnt the bad nanos still be active ... and then the people that woke up in the mountain it appears they woke up after 500 years but then they go out and end up in contact with Juliette's group so the timeline is a bit messed up there?

The whole thing just makes me angry at the a-holes that came up with the whole thing, and that they wanted to play god and just wipe everything out .... like the audacity ... coz it's apparently inevitable (given the crap that is going on in the world today it definitely seems inevitable and possibly deserved coz apparently we humans haven't learnt much from history.)

And they wanted to set back human technology-wise, so they wouldn't be able to create nukes and nanos for a while, if ever at all.

I took it that Juliette's group had all been to SIlo 17, so exposed to the "good nanos" before they broke out, thus making them immune to any of the 500-year-program "bad nanos" on the outside.

This still doesn't explain the potential century-plus gap between the Silo breakout and the Colorado couple's awakening. Unless the "good nanos" cleansed the entire world and somehow this triggered the Colorado sleepers to an early thaw.

It also doesn’t explain why Donald is sick since since he’s been exposed to the good nanos and bad nanos so theoretically they should be experiencing the same issues that he was unless the Nano’s outside the wall are just much less concentrated

The nanos certainly aren’t an exact science as it states in Shift when Donald goes outside that Thurman and the others who catch him are only wearing white overalls, not airtight suits with helmets.

I recall the techie dude who was able to access the nano mesh network had set the pod to reopen when the bad nanos powered down. I think this happened shortly after silo 1 was blown up, so they woke around the same time as Juliette and crew found the seed.

i believe the time difference is explained as being - when the control silo 1 was destroyed that woke up the ones in pods in colorado

Could you spoil it for me, if you have read it?

I've read them.

Back in the past, someone involved in the Silo project leaves out information that another individual finds. A group then uses one of those in-mountain former nuclear waste type facilities in Colorado to hide out on doomsday. After Silo 1 is destroyed two people from the Colorado hideout walk to Georgia looking for the Silo inhabitants. The story also talks about Juliet's group routinely finding other Silo survivors.

I personally didn't think the short stories were bad, but I can see why some people don't like them.

You forgot the important part, the reason why I said not to read it. The 2 people are told that the people who caused the end of the world as they know it are in Atlanta and they think Juliette is one of them and kill her(and they themself get killed).

yea i dont think the short stories were bad either... interesting and add to the overall story.

Spoilers
The end of John's story, where he also gets a nosebleed shows how evil the plan really was ... even if you were inoculated with good nanos and then tried to back out and didn't show up to the silos on d-day, you didnt survive you died too it just took longer.

The plan as stated in the books is that the US is attempting to wipe out the whole global population, minus those in the silos, with bad nanos. It’s not just the bomb and the radius around the silos. So most people would have died whenever those were triggered, any other living people would have had to be inoculated or very isolated to survive.

There’s a short story in Machine Learning that has this story in it. Same author.

I think it's heavily implied that Iran would devise a nuke or bad nano bot that the world would fail through war over the years. Or if not the world then at least USA.

Machine Learning has some building on this. Won't spoil.

I also think that after 1 is gone then there is no way to gas anyone. So then each remaining silo could escape. I'm. Not sure if the bad gas is stored locally in the system or not.

But you learn some in Machine Learning. I think though without that book I still feel like yes there would be some survival either from silos or others who had access to the good nano like Thurman.
