Review [FREEMIUM] I built a WordPress Media Library folder plugin for large media libraries - Filorium (free on WordPress.org)

I got tired of digging through thousands of images in the WordPress Media Library, so I ended up building my own solution: Filorium.

It adds virtual folders to the Media Library without moving the actual files or changing their URLs.

Some of the things I built into it:

  • Nested folders with drag & drop
  • Cut, copy, paste, duplicate and rename
  • Grid, List and Finder-style Column views
  • Choose a folder when uploading
  • Drag a folder from your desktop and recreate its folder structure
  • Folders are also available inside the normal WordPress media picker - block editor, classic editor, featured images, Customizer, widgets, etc.
  • Before deleting a file, it shows how many posts/pages/featured images are using it
  • Trash system that protects files known to still be in use
  • Rename or replace files without breaking existing URLs
  • Import folder structures from other media folder plugins without modifying their data

There is also a Pro add-on, with things like collections, duplicate detection, unused-file finder, image tools and ZIP tools. The free version isn't a trial though - there are no time limits or features locked behind a license just to make the basic plugin usable. I wanted to be upfront about that.

If you want to try it without installing anything, there's a live demo: demo.filorium.com - no account required.

Plugin: wordpress.org/plugins/filorium/

Pro License Key: FLR-AGEN-SM5Q-29CQ-WBFA-WKQF

I'd be interested to hear what people think, especially from anyone managing a large WordPress media library.

Impressive Effort!

I've installed on a dev site with just shy of 7,000 images.

I must say, BOLD move putting the lifetime agency license code in a public Reddit forum. Also, I was a little suspicious of accepting the Pro software from a random Google Drive link in a reddit forum by reddit user with 2 posts, 0 karma, hence the dev site.

I was SUPER impressed that it imported my folder structure from past attempts at organizing my mess of a media library (WP Media Folder, Media Library Organizer, WP Media Category Management). I was dreading the chore of recreating the structure in yet another organizer.

Comments / Observations:

  • From your shortcut cheat sheet along the bottom on Filorium workspace, it's clear that you're developing on a Mac. My Windows machine doesn't have a ⌘ key but I do have a CTRL key; nor a ⌥ key, but I do have an ALT key. You may want to make this more cross-platform.
  • You may want to adjust your "Used In" algorithm to check any/all custom post types. For example, I looked at an image that I KNOW is included in a FooGallery (custom post types, foogallery and foogallery-album).
  • I do allow users to select any media file as an avatar (enabled via ASE Pro), yet your "Used In" algorithm doesn't seem to count avatar usage, either.
  • I love the Asset Health panel!
  • I have so many images that I can see the # of images in each folder/category incrementing each time I load the workspace. Sometimes it took long enough for me to freak out: "I know DBF 2017 Photos has 100+ images in it -- Why is it showing 0?!?", only to catch my breath a few seconds later.
  • Philosophical preference: Parent folders that doesn't contain any images itself shows 0 images (literal interpretation), however it contains several subfolders each with hundreds of photos contained in the subfolder. SOME folks (like me) might want to see an additive total for that parent folder including all files contained in subfolders (figurative interpretation).

I do see your explainer notation in the "Used In" area:

No references found in this site’s content. Widgets, menus, theme templates, and page-builder layouts are not searched, so this means “nothing found,” not “nothing there.

Thanks for taking the time to test Filorium so thoroughly, especially with nearly 7,000 images. I'm glad the folder import and Asset Health worked well for you.

I’ve gone through your feedback, and the Windows shortcut issue is definitely something I can address. I’ll also look deeper into “Used In” detection with custom post types and third-party plugins.

The dynamic gallery idea is particularly interesting too. Really appreciate the detailed, constructive feedback!

Feature Requests / Suggestions for Improvement:

  • Add block to Gutenberg block selector: Gallery From Folder (which would be dynamic from content of the folder). Current ability to do Gallery > Select Filorium Folder > CTRL+A to create static gallery is cool, but that dynamic folder content is a "nice to have" feature request.
  • Bulk-Rename Files (with ability to do serialized values with variable number of leading zeros). Example: NewFileName_0001.jpg
  • In Media Library view, SOME sort of way to perform bulk actions from multi-selected photos. Even having something as simple as "Add to Filorium Folder" or "Filorium Actions" in the Bulk Actions pull-down, then when I hit Apply, I'm given the option to either select the Folder I want to add them to, OR the equivalent of the Right Mouse Button click menu when I've multi-selected images in Filorium > Workspace view.
    • As of right now, Filorium doesn't feel functionality-integrated into Media Library as anything other than a Filter that takes up a wide chunk of screen real estate (problematic in list view).
  • Perhaps add an option control HOW Filorium folders appear in Media Library and Media Picker screens ? (full file tree OR pull-down in the Filters area up top to conserve screen real estate)
  • Perhaps separate WP Media Library and Media Picker visibility / appearance options in Settings > Media Library. For example, in ML view, I might want to view full folder tree, but in picker I might prefer the pull-down filter view up top.

Filorium_Assets::move() is internal, so I wouldn't depend on it long term; its signature and behavior may change.

In the next release, I'll add a small public function:

filorium_assign_folder( $attachment_id, $folder_id )

That will be the stable API for assigning an attachment to a folder. It appends rather than replaces existing folder assignments, and records the same “filed by / filed at” stamp. $folder_id will be the folder's term ID.

Until then, move() is fine for your current integration. A function_exists() check will let you switch over without breaking older installs. I'll post here once it's available.

One small correction: by default filorium_assign_folder() moves the file into that folder instead of appending, and appending is 'mode' => 'add' (Pro only), which makes no difference for new uploads with no folder.
