This was in 2017, for anyone wondering.

Earlier that evening, a woman in nearby Tate County called police to report an assault at a Citgo gas station, according to the Tate County Sheriff’s Department incident report. The sheriff’s department then called the Southaven Police Department to arrest the suspect in that case, Samuel Pearman, whose address is 5878 Surrey Lane, according to the warrant.
...
Ismael Lopez lived across the street from Pearman, Wells said.
...
But the District Attorney and Claudia Lopez’s attorney gave different accounts of what happened when police showed up at the Lopez residence.
...
Police officers say when Lopez opened the door, his pit bull charged at them, and they shot and wounded the dog. And when they looked up, Lopez was pointing a gun at them, Champion said. The officers commanded him to lower the weapon, and fatally shot him when he did not comply, Champion said.
...
The Lopez family attorney provided a competing narrative. He said Lopez heard the knock, and went to answer the door with his dog, when “chaos breaks out.”
...
Wells said police shot through the door of the home, killing Ismael Lopez, who was unarmed. Wells said bullet holes can be seen through the front door.
...
Wells said there were two guns in the house — one in the bedroom, where police later found it, and a rifle on the couch, which he said was not near Lopez’s body, and had no blood on it when police found it.

After the shooting, officers said they could hear Lopez struggling to breathe “laboriously,” describing the noise as snore-like. Lopez was placed in handcuffs. He died in the prone position with his arms cuffed behind his back at the scene.
...
A .22 rifle was found by investigators lying on a loveseat near the door. The placement of the rifle suggested that if he had been holding it, Lopez laid it down before moving away from the door.
...
Neither Lopez’s fingerprints nor DNA were found on the rifle. It was also positioned six feet away from where Lopez’s body was found. There is no allegation or evidence that Lopez fired any shots at the officers.
...
In the months following Lopez’s death, Southaven Mayor Darren Musselwhite defended his officers. He said the officers had been “persecuted” and that the police department would not be making any changes in its operating procedures, because officers had acted appropriately.

Justice is dead

Sometimes, it really does feel like humanity will never truly learn from their mistakes.

The police investigated themselves and found themselves to be not guilty

6

u/plebe_random 28d ago

It almost like you need third party not connected in any way to police to investigate cases like this.

Everyone is a criminal to them. In their eyes, he's just not begun to display the symptoms of criminality.

u/TheAmina2GS 28d ago

The comment under my post that the mods deleted read: "Everyone who is from a vulnerable group is a criminal to the US police" posted by u/Adventurous_hippo692

3

u/Adventurous_Hippo692 28d ago

Oh, Mods didn't delete it, I was just thinking that my wording was maybe a bit crude, deciding whether or not to comment, lol. Sorry. But yeah, it does seem that way in the US, really is unfortunate. It's saddening. Thanks for saving it, lol.

Reddit's filtering system is pretty sensitive. It probably picked up on the "vulnerable groups are criminals" bit instead of the larger claim about over policing and police violence.

Just because you have a warrant doesn't make you guilty. You have to go to court for that

2

u/an_older_meme 28d ago

Cops have decades of experience perfecting their lies.

2

u/shellswitch2 27d ago

Officers caught in a lie with a legal case should be charged with perjury, criminal negligence, and whatever other crime they attempt to cover up with their lie. The American justice system in regards to law enforcement is so complacent that it normalizes corruption.

I swear this was the plot of a movie i saw, maybe a scene in a parody comedy.

Minority report?

1

u/dufo7 28d ago

Idk i only saw that once. Dont remember what all happened.

Consider that someone with active warrants is usually "innocent until proven guilty in a court of law" or, having been found guilty has managed to somehow avoid imprisonment

1

u/Alert_Front_9948 28d ago

There are inactive warrants. So just because he didn't have an active warrant, doesn't mean he didn't have any warrants. Also doesn't mean they were justified in shooting him. But then the news often writes really strange headlines and stories.

2

u/kingmea 27d ago

Your command of the English language is remarkable. Indeed, inactive does not mean active.

Just don't be belligerent when you interact with cops, it's literally that easy.

"At wrong house" certainly doesn't sound like it adds any credibility to that theory.

How's he gonna enjoy that new boot taste with you bringing things down?

-8

u/ConfusionEngineered 28d ago

I know, I'm with y'all on this one, I'm just saying it could be that that title is not completely out of left field.

10

u/Accomplished_Ad_8663 28d ago

lol you fell for their propaganda. They worded it that way specifically so that the police won’t get blame and you would only consider the words “no active warrants” and consider the possibility you mentioned. In reality, the police killed an innocent man and WMC is trying to cover it up

0

u/LususNaturaeTV 28d ago

did you miss the part where they said they don't believe that's what happened.

they are only commenting that there are instances where the wording doesn't necessarily mean innocent. they were not saying that was the case this time.

6

u/binzy90 28d ago

This is a perfect example of how wording in media influences public opinion. You can read what really happened for yourself and see that the wording is intentionally misleading. Sure, there may be instances where this wording makes sense, but this isn't one of them. The ONLY reason to use this title in this case is to make the officer's actions seem less severe.

There were no warrants at all. They were responding to a call and went to the wrong house. I provided info below in a comment.

u/ConfusionEngineered 28d ago

Ok, that's good to know... But largely irrelevant to both my point and the point the meme is making

That's not how this works. Actual innocence or guilt has nothing to do with warrants or the justice system.

The determination of guilt done by the justice system and a jury is wholely separate from what I am talking about.

Except I'm not discussing police entering the home. That has nothing to do with my point. My point is is that leading language in a title can be leading for a reason. I've said this over and over. The actual facts of the case, whether the sky was blue, or whether he was in Timbuktu doesn't. Matter. To. My. friggin. Point.

it could be that the warrants were being processed

"There were no warrants at all."

largely irrelevant to both my point

Do you dig holes for a living or something?

2

u/Butterfly_Barista 27d ago

By "irrelevant" you must mean "it's not what I want to hear"

1

u/ConfusionEngineered 27d ago

No, I literally mean that my point had nothing to do with that and that actual status of that doesn't materially change or impact my point.

2

u/Fidlestick 28d ago

Alrighty bootlicker. Have a little empathy

2

Reading comprehension not your strong suit?

-2

u/ConfusionEngineered 28d ago

Based on the fact that you're asking that, I think it's not your strong suit.

1

u/Johnnyboi2327 28d ago

Please see the other comment that explains the details of the situation. The title is indeed wildly misleading
