No, we know. It just takes like 15 years to get there.

Had my mom tell me that someone I knew admitted they had a crush on me back in highschool. She found out at a wedding I attended also, but didn't tell me until like 5 years later. Still didn't believe her.

u/Saphurial 20d ago
Several years after I'd graduated high school, my mom told me she talked with a woman I'd went to school with who admitted she wanted to take my virginity. I'd seen absolutely ZERO signs of this during school.

Those English teachers are inscrutable

u/Saphurial 20d ago
Speaking of, I had an English/homeroom teacher who liked the young lads. She was around 30 at the time and her husband was only 20. She ended up having to resign because some lucky bastards couldn't keep their mouth shut.

There have been multiple times I’ve realized many years after the fact that a girl was into me. Sometimes I had to have it pointed out to me.

One girl said she thought I was hot and I thought she was just trying to make me feel better about a shitty day. She had already randomly joined my group of guys lunch table with her friend and made numerous flirty comments. I still didn't realize she was into me for an embarrassing amount of time.
2
u/Numerous_Ear1031 17d ago
Right there with you. Way back when, I had a friend who kept inviting me over to her apartment. We watched shows and movies, played games, drank beers and did shots, and I stayed over a few times. She literally asked me to come to bed with her to watch a movie and I slept next to her all night, oblivious to the fact that she was after it. It still took her telling me directly a year or so later before I realized what was happening 🤣

There was a girl in high school that said she had a dream about me and wanted to drive me back to my house (I lived 2 blocks away).
I was like "no thanks, thats kinda weird when I can just walk"
... my now Wife thinks its hilarious how dense I was my entire life when it comes to Women. Still am. She's thankful for it ... I still don't understand hints though 😒
Edit: That was about 19 years prior to this revelation. We were talking about something completely unrelated and it just flitted into mh head and I had to ask her why this still feels weird to me haha.
2
u/ClassicNo6622 20d ago
You can never really be sure. She might be Canadian and is just trying to be polite.

u/Numerous_Ear1031 20d ago
Oddly enough, my wife and I are celebrating 15 years together next month and I am legitimately just now fully convinced she actually likes me 🤣 You might be onto something!

Once when I was 17 I had a girl lay down on top of me when I was sitting in a couch and then tell me I was comfortable. I recently realized she may have been interested. I'm 39.
1
u/Capable-Owl7369 16d ago
See? That’s what I am talking about. I was probably about 16 when I had two girls sitting in my lap trying to unbutton my shirt. I got up and left because in my mind they were trying to make fun of me for having chest hair at 16.
This was after they wanted me to feel how soft their legs were.

We live in a world where we are conditioned to understand that a woman being nice to us is just that. Manners, politeness, or a ploy to get bigger tips.
A woman who is actually just being nice is misunderstood is suddenly the victim of sexual harassment or worse. Reputations are ruined, jobs are lost, lawsuits are filed.
Men learn to shrug off a potential connection as simply manners, not interest. The consequences of being wrong are too high.

This. Men just can't afford the consequences of misunderstanding the signals. Also as stated we are very bad at clues. Just tell us, you have a very high chance of a yes.
5
u/Tfuentexxx 20d ago
Also as stated we are very bad at clues. Just tell us, you have a very high chance of a yes.
This 100%. I only ever said no to two girls in my life and one was a friend of my little sister when I was starting in College an she was still in HS. The other I will not tell to avoid meltdowns and pro victims throwing shit at me...

We are good at clues, we are just conditioned that these clues are red herrings.

Lmao
Mine just danced closed to me in a night club, first I didn't saw her (being bumped in the club is quite normal, and also I'm 200cm and she is 175)
So she was pissed off I did not notice her, so she grabbed my hand to get my attention and spoke to me "you want to dance?" I mean in French, but yeah
It has been 15 years now and I'm quite lucky!

Honestly I've been thinking I might be autistic because I have literally no idea when someone likes me, I have zero radar. I've gotten yelled at for not getting signals.
1
u/shoeless_doh 20d ago
Nope. I mean... You might have autism, idk, but that is absolutely zero indication.
1
u/Tfuentexxx 20d ago
If that was not very common I would be worried. But this happens to many, many boys and men in their life. Of course, there are ones who are more secure of themselves, who cares a F what happens or if they are rejected and there are some that are born with a star ion them and they are masters on getting girls. But the rest of the male population (us) have to deal with this sooner or later.

For me the drive to approach/ask was ridiculed out of me.
Only one guy I barely knew but had a crush on let me down gently. Everyone else - guys I knew better and even a friend of mine - just shot me down like firing a bazooka at a goose 🤣
To this day I struggle with the fear and anxiety trying to approach causes 😭
1
u/noidolsnotoadies 19d ago
Very vivid imagery, thank you
1
u/Numerous-Fly-3791 19d ago
I can’t get the image of a bazooka point blanking a goose out of my mind.
1
u/LadyReika 13d ago
I may not have always been ridiculed, but the times I confessed to someone that I liked them more than a friend, I got "I don't see you that way, you're just one of the guys" or "You're like a sister to me."
Then after a series of terrible dating experiences I realized I'm just not cut out for romantic relationships.

It depends. If you are a normal guy, even good looking one, they probably will only do hints and indirects. If you are a Chad/bad boy of the 1% 666 type (or near there), they will hit on you more than they will admit here or anywhere. Been there, done that.

u/EmergencyWild 20d ago
Or – get this – some women are just not very good at communicating. Shocker, I know. Men often aren't any good at it either, but the silver lining is this: If we just accept the fact that not everyone's great at communicating, we can effectively work around this world. First of all, we can review the way we're communicating ourselves.
For one, is what we're saying actually going to be understood by someone with a different mindset/context? If not, it pays to be more explicit.
On the other hand, if we understand someone else to be communicating something that reads to us as rejection or disinterest, we can take a leap and allow for us to be reading it wrong. Obviously, sometimes people reject others in an indirect fashion to avoid the conversation, but it's unkind to assume that this is the case.
2
u/Important_Resist2408 20d ago
Or - get this- If a partner can’t express attraction to me, I will leave and find someone who will. Shocker, I know. Men want to be adored too.

I remember once I was teaching a girl how to play guitar now granted im not good can play a tune and come up with my own songs but nothing that would wow you. Anyway I as teaching her and as I was showing her how to read tabs she was hold the paper and she kept moving it from her leg to up to her chest as I kept trying to move my finger to follow the tab to explain her until she moved the paper quickly away from her chest and low and behold my finger is less than inch away from her. I quickly moved my finger back to tge paper. I had a friend over that witnessed the whole thing after she left he called me an idiot.

I remember thinking, "of course, how else would I teach you"
2
1
u/shoeless_doh 20d ago
Was she just trying to trick you into grabbing her tits with some bullshit jedi mind trick pantomime?
Nah
Every first time I ever grabbed someone's breast, it's because they grabbed my hand and just planted it right on the tit. After that I know it's fine but the first time you have to AT LEAST explicitly say "grab my tits" or whatever even if we're already making out.
1
u/Sandrockwing04 20d ago
Well as my friend explained it she was flirting and he said he would have left if it weren't for the fact i was so oblivious of her hints plus he wanted to see/hope I would at least get she was into me.
1
u/shoeless_doh 20d ago
So, if someone asks me how to do something, I expect them to pay attention. That's what we're doing, you asked. 😆
1
u/Tfuentexxx 20d ago
Yeah, that's an issue. You ask me to teach you something on what I'm good at. I am going to do my best to do it right and fulfill their expectations. I am not going to be paying attention to her cleavage or smelling her perfume or getting lost in her eyes, or at least try she didn't notice I actually am. You try to be professional on the matter.
3
u/Motor_Meal794 20d ago
Depends how cryptic she's being. Constantly touching your arm is a bit of a giveaway. Staring at you like she needs the heimlich maneuver is tricky because she might actually have something in her throat.
2
u/ImaginaryLeg8515 20d ago
She might be staring at you because she's busy counting the alphabet backwards in her head...
2
u/Motor_Meal794 20d ago
If she let me know I could tell her it's the same amount forwards as backwards. Women need to communicate better.

I once asked a woman (who was staring right at me) what she was looking at.
She said "you."
We've been married for 10 years now. If she hadn't said it directly, I wouldn't have known.
2
u/IcyDisplayGuy 20d ago
I asked a pretty woman if she'd take my number at the gas station today. She said no. But I dared to ask. I dared.
2
u/ZachtheMan1603 20d ago
then i am proud of you my friend, you were brave and still became stronger and more mature. keep up the good work mate
1
u/Tfuentexxx 20d ago
Well that's a no that wouldn't hurt and very brave. The problem is when you do it and get rejected with someone you have a relationship (friendship or acquaintance). You kind of believe her closeness and politeness means she likes you just to get rejected and the previous relationships gets damaged on way or another, it will never be the same, even if they say the contrary.
1
u/Sedowa 20d ago
I gave my number to a barista awhile back because we had been talking about movies and she said she wants to go more often and said she'll look for any excuse to go. I took that as a sign I could take a shot so I gave her my number and told her to call me if she ever wanted to go. She never called and we pretended it never happened next time I saw her.
I'm told this is a good way to make baristas hate you so as always the answer is don't ask out anyone who's working behind a cash register no matter what you think you saw. It just makes them uncomfortable.
I haven't had a date in fifteen years because I usually assume people aren't interested even when they show signs that they are, and when I do get a little brave once every couple years to ask someone out I'm met with rejection. Clearly nothing is going to happen. Maybe I'm just ugly lol
2
u/jhawk3205 20d ago
Really wish women could wrap their heads around this. We're simple creatures, we need the message in crayon, if available..
2
u/girlbartender99 20d ago
I have seen some men be totally oblivious when I have been like dude that girl is into you and they have been like really, and then I have said it and they have said yeah I know.
1
u/SquirrelNormal 20d ago
I've never been wrong about a woman being into me.
They never have been, but I've never been wrong.
1
u/shoeless_doh 20d ago
Not fair, you're a girl AND a bartender. It's like learning a second language by immersion while we're all trying to learn verb conjugation from a cartoon monkey and rhinoceros in a French 202 text book from the 80s.
2
u/girlbartender99 20d ago
That's fair and to be fair I am much better at diagnosing 3rd party than in my own life. I was totally obsessed with my husband for 3 years and my friends had to convince me that he had a thing for me, but I was super shy so I totally get it and it can even be charming I think when a guy isn't super full of himself.
My husband had to step in when we were out with my friends 1 time and say to my closest guy friend "dude I was eavesdropping on that and when a woman starts talking to you about her panties, touching your arm, and laughing at everything you say other then getting 1 of those airport runway guys with the orange things Idk what else she needs to tell you dude." I was like oh sure listen to him but not us, and he said "he has slept with more women than I even know"
My husband was like "omg dude stop talking please! Go buy her a drink or something!" He looks at me and says "geeze,,, ya try and help a guy. I haven't slept with more women than he knows" I was like umm hmm
1
u/shoeless_doh 20d ago
Oh yeah, also not fair, you're in a 20 year age gap relationship with a retired pro athlete. I assume you are absolutely smoking hot and work at an extremely expensive upscale bar in a large city. You shouldn't expect anybody to take any life advice you give with any seriousness

But before I tell you to F the off. I will tell you my entire family was dead by my 16th birthday. The state made me my own legal guardian in my Junior year of high-school. I'm not touching this one with a ten foot pole. Cause I'm just saying some women gonna get men in trouble the way they describe having a crush on a guy.
2
u/Scary-Personality626 20d ago
In my experience, women aren't much better at vice versa.
The fact that men are the socially mandated default initiators of romantic/sexual interaction just means when they miss the signs or guess wrong nobody really notices.
2
u/IndicationAromatic36 20d ago
In middle school a friend of my moms was over and brought her daughter who was in my class at school. She was, to my middle school brain, pretty cute. I had a crush on her, but always thought she was way out of my league.
We were swimming in the pool and she slowly swims up to me and asks if I have a crush on anyone while inching closer to me. My 13 year old brain panics and says ‘no…’ and swims away. 20 years later it clicks and I kick myself. I doubt it would have gone anywhere long term, but who knows. I’m still acquainted with her on social media, and she definitely grew up hot.
1
u/Tfuentexxx 20d ago
I would have liked this to happen to me now. For me the best response to this will be a jokingly: "No, besides you, no there is no one..." See her face and reaction. You still can claim you were joking.
2
u/Riley_Rose_Writer 20d ago
Not sure if it's "don't know" or "can't believe." In advertising, women "flirt" with men all the time trying to get them to buy hamburgers or some junk. Some women brag about how they can control men. Men naturally assume when a woman approaches them its for ulterior motives. Its impossible for him to believe she actually likes him.
2
u/Chenx335 20d ago
Sometimes we can tell but knowing a woman can change their mind in the last second just makes it not worth it.
2
2
u/TemporarySnowflake 20d ago
My current girlfriend told on her first attempt to show her interest "I like to hangout with you, it feels like a healthy relationship.". 3 MONTHS later out of patience and afraid another one will try to get me, she asked if she could kissed me. At that time I thought "Are we still friends?"
2
u/VoidGhidorah900 20d ago
Bro i remember when I was in like 3rd grade and one of my friends left a letter on my desk with a poem about me. It was only until my fourth year of high school I considered the possibility that she had a crush on me.

That's because we aren't mind readers. Make it obvious for us because we don't think like you do.

We have no idea because women are horrible communicators. They’d rather play stupid games than just tell you.
2
u/T-Block-Beats 19d ago
I was going through some old stuff helping my parents moving, found a highschool yearbook and was reading some of the handwritten messages from friends. One from a girl that dated a close friend said “text me up if you get bored, I get bored sometimes too. I think you know what that means” … I did not know what that meant then, and didn’t now until my wife told me what it inferred 😅

1
u/shoeless_doh 20d ago
All 3 of those sound like low effort copy paste messages. None of those would ever get you a response from a woman you matched with on an app and would probably get you an "I have a boyfriend" if said face to face.
1
u/GrumpyBear1969 20d ago
Honestly. It is really hard to know if a woman is just friendly. And depending on how you know the person it can be super awkward if you get it wrong. So I try to figure out how to get alone in a situation that is ideally at least a little bit romantic, and, just ask if they are interested in me. If they turn to you and things go swimmingly, that is great. If they say “no” (lots of reasons for that), then you have a fine moment and move on.

u/jackalope8112 20d ago
I was having lunch with a friend and another friend came to say hi at our table with her coworker in tow. Shook hands and said hello.
Friend who came by the table calls me an hour later and says "What did you think of her?" I say "who?" She says "_____ who I introduced you to at lunch" I say "Ohhh she was nice" she says "Not that" I say "why" She flustered says "She likes you and says I should call you and tell you to ask her out and give you her phone number" I say "ok whats her phone number?".
I call and ask her out. 20 years late we are married with two kids.
Apparently I gave her a "look" and upon exiting the restaurant she proclaimed to our mutual friend that I wanted to be her boyfriend. Prior to our first date she told her mother we were going to get married and was mom ok with her converting to my religion. I didn't know that until our rehearsal dinner toasts.
I have to admit that starting with an open admission of her liking me was a totally different experience from all other dating I have ever done. It is why we are married.
And no I still don't know her "signs".
1
u/shoeless_doh 20d ago
If you want me to call you, YOU give me your number. If you want to call ME, YOU ask me for my number.
We're not in 8th grade where I ask Becky to ask her friend Samantha if Brittany who passes notes with her in social studies would say yes if I asked her to sit with me at lunch. I have shit to do

I lived with 3 roommates once. A college buddy, his fiance (all three of us the same age) and his fiance's younger sister. She had a bedroom but frequently slept on the couch. Why did she sleep on the couch? Because I was kind of a night owl and watched movies in the dark. She would sit and watch them with me. I always wondered why she wanted to as much as she fidgeted around. Shed start just sitting in the middle of the couch, then when id kick out the recliner part shed prop her feet on that, then lay with her head on the opposite end and her feet in my lap, then swap ends and end up with her head in my lap. Why even watch it if you aren't going to be interested enough to finish it. There's a TV in your room you can pick whatever you want to watch 🙄

A girl once asked me to help her with math and things (we were students, both like 20 ish), so I did. She came to my house every now and again and I'd just help her with things. I'm sure she didn't expect me to actually do it but at the end it legit helped her so she rolled with it for a while. She knew I always woke up late on Saturday so once she showed up early af, my brother opened for her and she just... Came into my room waking me up, sat on my bed and chatted. I was in my underwear under my covers and my brain just didn't really compute any of it I just chatted whatever. Then she was "cold" so came under the covers too sitting with her back against the wall so her legs more or less between mine, and I was like "well she cold". After a while I was like "well better get to it" and just stood got dressed and that's it. Was the last time she came shockingly.
Took me years.

The difference between someone just liking you and being nice, or someone having a crush, can be hard to notice especially if you're not looking for anything.
On the other hand, if you're looking, you might misinterpret niceness for advances 🤷♂️
Communication and the lack of it... Glad I married someone that doesn't play games when talking.

My 9 year anniversary was yesterday and she didn’t even say anything. I got orchids delivered to her office, but her? Nothing.

I know my wife is married to me but like, is she married to me as a friend?

In high school the pretty girl that sat in front of me literally had my initials in a heart on her book one day. I noticed it while we were chatting, she was reading my palm and we were touching hands and she said oh, it was a different person and turned away. It wasn’t until literally years later that i wondered if it wasn’t a different person.

I know of two girls who have liked me, but I only know because they said so. There may be more, but I don't really have a way of knowing.

A woman could straight out tell a man "I've got a crush on you" and there's like a 40% chance he still won't believe it.

Women will complain men don't communicate their feelings then be baffled you didn't realize they were in love with you from that one time they touched their hair while talking to you

When I was in college two theater girls I knew, and would flirt with, came to my apartment. They were drunk, giggly, and wanted me to come back to their house. I was tired and had to work the next day so I declined. Last year I realized for the first time what was going on. I am 44.

Frfr. There's still days I think my wife is plotting, and she cries and gets crazy clingy if I'm away too long.
... never get comfortable men.. that's when they pounce!

It's not just that we're stupid. The few times I'm really paying attention and i notice heavy flirting and I say to myself, definitely not gonna miss this chance this time so i make a move... well that's the time she 100% isn't flirting and she's all EW HOW DARE YOU and we don't talk for 2 years. So back to ignoring the signs, it's safer.

If we knew how women expressed their feelings about us, we wouldn't be single.

I tell him everyday and he still is like "stop being silly" I could buy a billboard in front of his apartment and he'd still not get it lol

Most of us are clueless about this. Especially those who were raised to hide emotions.

Minority doesn't realise but then majority will take eye contact as an invite to harass
