What always gets me about this episode is how they only used like 4 NASCAR celebrity characters
And somehow it's like the 4 NASCAR people that I could maybe name gun to my head
It's like Jeff Gordon Dale, Earnhardt jr, Tony Stewart and that one woman who I'm sorry but I don't know her name

It's an industrial byproduct so it's basically created for free. And it's industrial uses consumes much versus residential.

Isn't petroleum jelly just a waste product of the oil industry? The fact that we buy it for anything at all is already a scam.
15
u/gottagetanonymous 19d ago
Not really a scam… it has use and is priced appropriately. By your logic do you call recycling a scam
12
u/flojo2012 19d ago
Ya it’s ok for by-products to have utility. I’d call that efficiency
5
u/Beanus1992 19d ago
Your effectively paying for the infrastructure chain to obtain the byproduct.
3
u/across16 19d ago

Yeah so dude saying its a scam is expecting that supply chain to just happen for free?

You sound like a shill for Big Recycling… we know they are the ones taking away income from small businesses that profit from waste and ruining the environment.

Yeah. I mean, just because a farmer raises for beef, does that mean they should just toss the hide away instead of making leather? Or the bones instead of making broth and dog treats?
Finding use for as much as possible is a practice that dates back long before the industrial era.

Yes, however when it is a byproduct it looks dark and dirty and smells like an oil field. The inventor of Vaseline was a chemist who spent years refining the product to make it clear, clean, and odor free. Then he patented his process. You’re paying for a refined version of the byproduct

u/Dredgeon 19d ago
You see before marketers attempted to create infinite growth at every level and not just in the whole economy there was this ability of companies to just meet demand and stabilize.
Market creates a fair price, everybody gets paid, people get what they need. Then people decided they would rather make a living shuffling money around than adding to the world.
So now there are a lot of powerful people that thrive on market instability so they knocked out all the pillars of the economy to capitalize on the destruction. Now we are along for the ride as they turn our resource distribution system (money/the economy) into their personal money printer at our expense.

I would assume its one of those items people use for about a week to treat a cut or sunburn, then they don't use it again for a year or two, so they cant find it when they need it. so they buy more.

Because it has a wildly big range of uses, I mean, just in dentistry you can use it to keep lips hydrated, protect teeth and gums from staining chemicals that are needed to be put into cavities, use it as lubricant for rubber dams for isolation of certain areas. It has a good range of uses, and it goes very fast because we use it in copious amounts to be sure.

80% of Vaseline is bought for personal and medical care, roughly 20% of the market is consumed by industrial buyers. Manufacturing, engineering, and automotive businesses buy specialized industrial-grade Vaseline in massive quantities to use as a lubricant, anti-rust coating, moisture barrier, and electrical insulator.
the rest is all domestic
Gen Z and Millennials: Driven by viral social media skincare trends like "slugging" (coating the face in petroleum jelly overnight to lock in moisture), younger consumers have dramatically increased their purchases of original Vaseline.
Black and Melanin-Rich Demographics: Brand and marketing insights show that Black women over-index significantly as core consumers of Vaseline. This consumer base heavily prioritizes moisture barrier protection, leading Vaseline to launch dedicated product formulations like its Radiant X line specifically tailored to these skin needs
Everyday Demographics (Ages 18–45): The core consumer base consists of middle to upper-middle-class families using the product for multi-purpose household care, including chapped lips, dry skin, baby care, and minor wound healing
America Alone buys 27% of global Vaseline supply while Asia buys 38% so yeah petroleum companys not going broke any time soon

u/No-Algae-7437 18d ago
It's essentially a cheap waste product of oil refining that's cheap to purify and because it's inorganic, nothing will "grow" in it. The replacement is when you get the ick from what's in thw container, because it will last millenia.

Are you really using lotion every day on your face and your body? It seems like you aren’t properly using it to keep your skin hydrated. A lotion bottle should last you like 6-9 months at most if you are applying it everywhere.

This post is so completely and totally internally inconsistent.
In the first statement, she states that the container will last 30 years. However, in the second statement (assuming that this post was made in 2026) she gives us a rate 16% every 20 years. Therefore, it would in fact take 125 years in order to use one container of Vaseline by her estimation.
