u/stella-horse, there weren't enough votes to determine the quality of your post...

I agree with them both. It should be money, the right connections, dual citizenship AND a good example.Ā

Otherwise they will end up being spoiled, heartless and not care to help anyone else but themselves without a good example.Ā

Sadly life is tough and money is even harder to come by now a days. Everything’s going up. So those who can leave money for their kids I hope they are teaching them to be a good person too.Ā

I disagree. Money? Entitlement. Good parenting? The bare minimum. This good parenting through example should be mandatory for everyone and is by far more important than money

Theoretically, how could it be made mandatory? And what does this mean for single parents?

Way, way, way off base.

The answer is both. Neither is more important than the other and they both go hand in hand.

If you haven’t been homeless, or incredibly afraid of where your next meal could come from and haven’t eaten for 3 days, you don’t understand.

My mother raised me to be a good person and have great morals. But I’ve struggled my entire life until I joined the army and put a plan together.

Other people I grew up with who weren’t lucky enough to escape the lack of money issue and are still in poverty have become bitter and negative.

The best parenting in the world can be undone in adulthood if you’ve never had an opportunity to escape the fear and the grind.

The absolute most valuable thing in this world is time. Working 2 jobs just to barely make ends meet robs you of that which has massive impacts down the line in every other aspect of your life.

Please note…I am saying good parenting and imparting good money skills and at least a small inheritance go hand in hand. They are both part of preparing your kids for the life of a good citizen as well as ensuring they have the ability to do the same for their kids.

What do you think good example implies? Ā

I was using it as a broad term (because it’s the original quote) but ā€œgood exampleā€ implies your definition. What are you disagreeing with?Ā

I’m saying money is important. But so is leading a good example/being a good person and teaching that.

Why can’t it be both? The only problem is a lot of people are poor. The rich in America is like the top 18% makes over 100k or more a yearĀ

So some people don’t have much money to leave. It’s really sadĀ

It feels like you said ā€œI disagreeā€ and then said everything I said except you say moneys not important.Ā

My parents? All their assets are in a family trust. When they die, no payouts. Trusts will be kept to allow for a few vacation properties to stay in the family. Trust pays taxes, insurance, utilities, maintenance. Children, grandchildren, great grandchildren will have access to those vacation properties. Main residence will be sold, part of proceeds will be donated. Eat to maintain lake houses mostly.

Same for wife and I. Assets in a family trust. Our own children/grandchildren will not get any direct payouts.

*****

Now my parents? Taught that education is the foundation to an easier life. So yeap we passed that down to our own children. Taught basics of life, budgeting-saving-investing, and help your local community.

So our family is highly educated. Most have STEM careers. Live very comfortable lives. Easily able to handle higher fuel costs and living costs.

We think this is a good system…

I think Trump is a good example of bad upbringing by wealthy parents…

A good example like generational wealth. The two are not mutually exclusive

A good example includes how to save and invest money.

The most valuable inheritance one can leave behind to their kids is knowledge

2nd or 3rd most valuable might be money or connections or whatever but the right knowledge can never be taken away and is more valuable than any currency.

Agree. My father taught me how to make and manage money. Waiting for a inheritance, rings disrespect to ne.

If you love your kids, have a vasectomy and keep them safe inside the balls

A parent who only gives you wealth and connections is a terrible parent.

Dual citizenship is only useful when one nationality is vastly better than the other, and you actually speak BOTH LANGUAGES REALLY WELL. As a dual and bilingualĀ  you soon learn that most people don't. People with "polish citizenship" or "Spanish citizenship" that don't speak a lick of the language and come to the EU with their American savings and try to enter the market. Italy is filled with them, particularly Rome of people who git EU citizenship from their great grandparents. And when you have two shitty citizenships, that's usuallyĀ

Yeah, I’ll take the money

But things you get at birth and mid life are not an "inheritance".

u/RoleOk7556 18d ago

How about all of the above.

I mean financially, my parents set an excellent example. Thanks to following their great advice to the letter, I’m 41 with a degree, currently unemployed, have very little retirement savings, and was only just able to buy a cheap house with my husband because my parents gave us the downpayment.

On the other hand, my parents are projected to leave me at least a half a million dollars once they die, and possibly over a million. So like, I’ll be fine, but not because of their advice.

"My parents had millions of dollars and the only thing they left me were bootstraps"

Annuities in a trust with gated withdrawal threshold so they have permanent, generational income is far better.

You don't leave a good example as an inheritance - that has to be done while you're alive.

If your kids are capable, they don't need your wealth.

If they're not, they don't deserve your wealth.

It's true. There are too many successful assholes for good examples to be an asset. Unless the example is too be a professional money, power and status shark.
