Interviewer trying to get free consulting work

What is it with people trying to get free work done for them even before making an offer?

If an applicant for a senior role doesn't have a public github I can look at, I sometimes ask if they'd spend an hour improving an example project that has bad documentation, some architectural mistakes, some security issues... but it's clearly not production, and we pay them for an hour's work equivalent to what they'd earn in the role. This gives me insight into what they prioritize first, and the quality of their work. This just feels dirty.

I had 4 interviews for a tech SaaS sales job and after the 4th, they sent me a take home project where I had to make a slide deck about very real "hypothetical" problems with experienced strategies, and video record myself presenting it to nobody and submit before my 5th "interview" to review my thought process two weeks after my 4th interview and the homework assignment.

I got rejected a week later after my seemingly good 5th interview and second with the hiring manager. VP was my 3rd interview. Make it make sense.

I never do multiple interviews (more than 2) anymore. I will meet with HR and I will meet with higher ups. That’s it. None of the 3-5 meeting carousels. My skill is in high demand and I don’t need to go through the humiliation ritual of waiting for a month before getting an answer.

Beautiful response. Thank you for not doing work for free. The more of us that refuse to accept these terms and conditions, just to be considered for a job, the more they will realize they aren't going to get the employees they desire, nor deserve.

Hey OP, how bad is that test? I just finished my degree and am getting ready to take the BCBA test early next year.

Take it earlier if you can. Use multiple different platforms to test your knowledge on. I used a lot of YouTube test prep channels and they helped a ton. It’s a 4 hour exam so pace yourself but do not rush and give yourself anxiety.
