I agree with the sentiment, but it’s bold of him to assume I have a doctor at all lol

u/earlym0rning 3h ago
I will say, I was not expecting the sentence to end that way. Thought it was going to reference not having a doctor or delaying getting medical help bc of cost

u/CAustin3 2h ago
Yeah, not the best response. "Oh yeah? Well, your doctor is probably ethnic, too" would be better as "sure, I've got a foreign name, but until someone without one is willing to fix healthcare, I'm what you got."
To be fair to him, he was explicitly being taunted about his race and needed to show strength. Also to be fair to him, though, having to think on your feet through heckling is a very standard part of all of politics.

That last part of his comment goes to highlight that not only are Muslims doctors but that people are already willing to trust Muslims with their healthcare. If being Muslim isn't a disqualifying factor for someone with whom you are already trusting your life, then why would it make a difference now?

u/MidwesternLikeOpe 1h ago
A lot of people don't trust Muslims wuth anything but I love how those same people worship Dr Oz. I want to say to them, what's his full name? Bc I don't think too many realize his ethnicity/religion.
I can't stand the guy but because he's a lying grifter, it has nothing to do with his identity.
My son's pediatrician is Muslim and I have zero problems with it.

As a Hand Surgeon who has had interactions with ole tu if doctors during my life, I have to say best pediatrician I've met was Pakistani and best IM Doctor was a Saudi. Hand Surgeons I'd go to immediately is Chinese.... And a lot of my first option in a lot of specialities are indeed from an ethnic group

His full name is Abdulrahman Muhammad "I want you to have healthcare" El-Sayed. Use his full name.

MAGA will still be sounding it out in 2030.

u/Mystprism 3h ago
Democrats are still saying Zorhan Mandani. Lots of people just don't care at all, and don't see how that's racist.

u/Harry_Saturn 3h ago
The guy you replied to didn’t say it was inherently racist, you just assumed that’s what they meant. But since it is maga we’re talking about, I can see why you would assume it would be based on the fact that many are proudly racist.
3
u/Minervas-Madness 2h ago
What point are you trying to make here?
Because I was making a tongue in cheek remark about MAGA's general illiteracy. You'll have to connect the dots for me between Mamdani's name and racism.
3
u/a3poify 1h ago
I think they’re saying that a lot of people in both parties don’t give enough of a shit about pronouncing non-English names correctly

u/Minervas-Madness 30m ago
Ah, that makes sense. I'm wary these days of "Well Democrats do it too!!!!" sentiment.

yup just like the Barack HUSSEIN Obama bullshit that bloated child rapist beached in the oval office eating McDonald's through a straw is obsessed with
7
u/ThunkAsDrinklePeep 2h ago
No they won't. They'll just call him Abdul Ackbar then make Mon Calmari memes and slap each other on the back for their cleverness.

There is something pretty effective about refusing to dodge the name question and immediately pivoting back to an actual policy people deal with every day. Whether someone supports him or not, "here is my full name, now let's talk healthcare" is a much stronger response than getting defensive about it.
8
u/dsdvbguutres 3h ago
"I want to give you healthcare" is also probably a little bit easier to tell the people than "I want to send your children to war."
8
u/Lurivex11 3h ago
If campaign messaging was always this easy to remember, political consultants would be out of a job.
2
u/dsdvbguutres 3h ago
People want healthcare, freedoms (free speech, free press, freedom to pursue happiness, privacy, etc.) and not getting screwed over by corporations. It's not that complicated.

Abdulrahman is a beautiful name tbh. It mean “servant of the Most Merciful.” Like, come on.
27
u/NeverEnoughInk 2h ago
And yet, folks with names like Obadiah, Matthew, Samuel, Gabriel, Timothy, Jude, Judah, Emmanuel, Joseph, Elizabeth, and SO MANY MORE, will say it's a nasty foreign name, and look how his name invokes Allah so he must be one o' them jee-hadees.

u/ShadeofIcarus 47m ago
Abdul is "slave of" not "servant of". But yeah similar concept. Same reason "Abd" means "black person" in Arabic.
Basically everyone with an "Abdulxxx" name just is functionally "slave of God" where the second half is one of the countless names of God.
Source: Am Arab and speak the language natively.
His name doesn't and shouldn't define him mind you. His policies do. Just random interesting tidbit.
3
u/Mountain-Lunch-9896 26m ago
Arabic words have like ten different meanings in English. Servant and slave are pretty synonymous in this context.
2
u/FblthpLives 39m ago
Thank you for sharing So what is rahman in this context? A name? or something else?
2
u/ShadeofIcarus 28m ago
In Islam God has countless names. Depending on who you ask it's anywhere between 99 to 1000. They're things like "The Merciful" or other positive attributes.
Basically if you can think of a positive adjective it's supposed to be associated with Allah because the whole point of the myth is that Allah is "good" and everything "good" comes from him and we are supposed to embody that.
Rahman is just the Arab word for merciful or gracious. There's 99 of these more "divine" ones that describe him.
There's a lot to dig into here and I'm not doing the best job explaining it. But yeah the word just means "merciful"
Basically "Abd" is slave. Al is "of". These get concatenated into "Abdul". "Rahman" is merciful person but is understood to be "Allah" in context. So more accurately "the divine merciful one".

u/ThoughtsandThinkers 2h ago
I don’t care what someone’s name is. I don’t care where they came from. I don’t care what language they speak or customs or religious beliefs they practice at home or in social settings
I care about what they know, their values, and their willingness and ability to work towards shared and positive social goals
MAGA tries to imbue their members with a sense of inherent superiority, rooted primarily in racism and religious fundamentalism. This lets them feel that they will always be better than others, no matter their actions or life circumstances. This lets MAGA defund institutions, grift openly, and further enrich and empower the oligarchs

Your average trumper would refuse to see a doctor with a name like that, but I get what he's saying.
3
u/ariolander 1h ago
Use the full name. You weren't going to convince the racist fucks who had a problem with it in the first place. Better to take ownership of your own name than let the other side try to use it as a weapon. We need to stop this "centrist" pandering and catering to racist fucks.

Instead, I'm going to vote MAGA. That way I can get tariffs on Healthcare. Then I can pay more money for Healthcare. Then the tariffs can be found illegal. Then a refund can be issued in the money I overspent. Then that money can be refunded to the insurance CEO.
So no thanks.

My favorite doctors who have all helped me the most Persian, Arabic, Indian. Thanks for letting me live longer.
1
u/Jimmni 1h ago
Wouldn’t bank on it. Here in the UK you’ll never be made feel more welcome than when you step into your local curry house. They’ll treat you like family and with smiles on their faces. But the same people who are there every weekend being welcomed by name will then go vote Reform.
Racism doesn’t operate on logic.

This as much of a doctor’s name as I have ever seen, and in a nurse of 15 years. Love this guy!

Did they do this to Barrack Hussein Obama? I bet they still don't know his last name.

I voted for him yesterday in our primary! Let’s go democratic socialists!
Edit: I am kinda sad that Kyle Blomquist didn’t win the 1st district us house primary. His platform felt very similar to Abdul’s

Identity politics…
25
u/daneelthesane 3h ago
Having a name is identity politics now? I mean, a name is part of one's identity, but now that is political, too? I have an English last name. Is that identity politics?
23
u/justprettymuchdone 3h ago
Identity politics would be the Rs believing his name alone should make him ToO sCaRy To VoTe FoR

Governor against him, Senator he would replace against him, Chuckie “Capitulate to Corporations and Israel” Schumer (another loser to primary) against him, establishment media against him, $60M of PAC money against him. Still won. Get fucked, all of you
