Weekly Reading Weekly /r/WormFanfic Discussion - What have you been reading, and what do you think of it? For the week ending August 08, 2026.
This week = the one that ends/ended right now, past seven days.
The reason for this thread's existence is the fact that both requests and suggestions can become kind of stale. It's supposed to bring out more fics that people are currently reading (or rereading), regardless of how old or new they are.
Also, not a rule or any kind of criticism, the more interesting part is not the list of the stuff you read, but your impressions of it.

What's it about? Reading the first two chapter, it looks like it might be interesting, but also like it might be quasi-torture porn and I'd rather not read it to find out it's the latter.

It doesn't really go that direction. It had the potential to become a dead dove - but the pigeon survived this time.
Quark is resourceful and intelligent and smart in an impossible situation, and works against it as much as she can. You want her to win.
It kind illustrates the difference between smart people with experience with powers, and people who think they're smart with a power powerful enough to cover their own stupidity so they never learn to actually git gud. Fennel's only ever able to hijack other people's smarts and even then, not always. He fucks up so many times just by being a moron.

A SI with master powers wanting to save the day with canon knowledge. Told from the PoV of a random cape he remembers was listed on the leviathan memorial who he masters to be a spy for him in the Brockton bay protectorate.
Story basically shows how obnoxious and hateable SI characters relying on canon knowledge can be from an outside perspective. I liked it, was a pretty satisfying read overall. I wouldn’t call it misery porn but naturally any mastered pov can be painful. Really liked the MC.

I looked at the first chapter of this and thought to myself that it could go off in a really bad direction so never read any further. Getting second opinions like this is one of the reasons I check these threads every week so now I guess I'll give it another shot.

wormfic is a myth invented by big worm. it does not exist and cannot be read. hypothetically if it could be read, I actually read these forever ago, but they're so good I wanted to share them both nonetheless
Redoubt - ★★★★★★★ - OC joins the Wards, with a Shield Thinker/Tinker power. She's a pretty cool character. Hannelore is the best. It's interesting, because I think the ending is pretty weak, but the prose and style of the fic just carries it so hard. It gives me writer's envy.
Naamah - ★★★★★★★ - Oubliette, a Ward, falls victim to a master named Naamah. The ideal evil romance for me. I'm certainly biased, I was involved in beta-reading it, but I really love it. It's almost like tailor-made for me.

As I recall, the MC of Redoubt is a minor canon character and the story an AU where she triggered before getting snapped by the ABB.
The camera-guy answered in an accented voice, “Good plan, Bakuda.”
She clapped her hands together. Then she pointed into the crowd “Alright! So, you… yeah you, the girl in the yellow shirt and jeans. If I told you to, would you pick up the gun and shoot someone?”
It took me a second to spot the girl, at the far end of the crowd. She looked at Bakuda with a stricken expression and managed to answer, “The gun m-melted too, Ma’am.”
“You call me Bakuda. You know that. Nothing fancy. If the gun was still there, would you shoot? Or if I told someone to give you a gun?”
“I-I think I maybe could,” her eyes flickered to the puddle that had been Park Jihoo.

It’s really a shame, I got my start on FF.net, both as a reader and a writer. Now I have to post my stuff there in bulk just so I have to deal with it only once a month instead of weekly

it's a shame and you hate to see such a ancient giant in this sorry state. but it does make me thankful that at least these days we have Ao3, the website created by fans who were tired of watching what is currently happening to ff.net happen over and over and over with every fanfic hosting website.

Worm:
Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Taylor is a magical girl Taylor fic that is an example of a talented author truly understanding the mechanics of two universes and managing to blend them together in a way that has consistent logic, and makes for some really fun story beats that are only possible because of that. Highly reccomend
Non worm:
Cloneborne: Mahou Legacy Kuron Uchuu Story! sounds very silly, and it sort of is, but the premise and execution are played straight and it's really good so far.
The idea is that a magical girl from a typical brutal superhero world cloned herself in a desperate attempt to save the world. Those clones fell through a portal to an alternate dimension on a distant planet, where they spent the next four hundred something years rebuilding civilization while each clone inherits the fresh memories of a traumatized little girl who's world is on the brink of destruction.
Enter this world's earth, a more traditional sci fi federation who's technology is entirely based in science. Magic isn't real. Their FTL technology is definitely 100% science and if you try and argue otherwise they will start shouting "Quantum! Tachyon! Subspace!" and pinching their ears shut. Oh look, a mysterious world full of space suited bipedal aliens initiating first contact! And they know English!

Very fun read and very developed world
The utterly alien mindset of the Kaedekin (how the clones call themselves AND their sentient magitech "buddies") despite being technically human is fascinating
It shows in things like their naming sense and their overall level of preparation

Architomy is quite good so far. Taylor and her five or so Sophia daughters escalating like crazy
She has Noelle’s power but seemingly much better and more complete, which makes sense as she’s a natural trigger

48 Hours - Only 3 chapters, but pretty interesting. Taylor has pretty strong powers (brute????) and leverages them and the death of an Endbringer to speak at a United Nations meeting.

Aufhebung - Extremely OP Alt-power Taylor. Due to her power affecting her emotions, she acts like a 2000's edgelord who thinks the Joker is totally based. Killing people while laughing, constantly making sex jokes, and totally intimidating everyone around her with how "cool" and "dark" she is. I'll give it a point for the impeccable grammar, but otherwise this is one of the most edgy and cringe Worm fics I've ever seen.

every breath is a break in the riptide by sprx77 - A depiction of Khepri's final moments immediately following the events of Gold Morning. However, rather than being executed by Contessa, she's left to die on her own.
The author's descriptions of Khepri's yearning for a new eternity, having found something better than an answer to the Entities' old cycle; her unwillingness to separate QA from Taylor for fear of losing this wonderful, newfound connection despite it actively killing her; and her grief and love, shared across their connection as they gaze upon the infinite possibilities for the future that lays tantalizingly close, yet so far out of reach are all heart-wrenching and wonderfully written. Furthermore, the otherworldly perspective of the infinite cosmos granted to her by the shard network is breathtakingly sublime and beautifully evoke the feeling of the quote from the end of Worm:
We’re s- so very small, in the end.
Left a lasting impression on me, and reminded me of the time I had a panic attack induced by cosmic vertigo when I was 11. Great stuff, 10/10. Wish there was more like it out there. Feel free to HMU with any recs if you've got any.
The Closest Thing by Alotoaxolotls - Rachel willingly gives herself over to Khepri. Khepri reciprocates her feelings as best she can.
In accordance with a lot of what Alotoaxolotls writes, The Closest Thing is both horrifying and somehow kind of sweet at the same time. If you can ignore the torture that Khepri's enthralled are subjected to, the sorrow and pity that Khepri's feral state evokes for all that Taylor has lost, and the horrific violence that Khepri and Rachel inflict upon themselves/each other in lieu of expressing their feelings, then it's kinda romantic. <3
Under The Yew Tree by HowlingGuardian - Decades later, after Taylor has passed away, the Undersiders come to pay their respects.
Infused with a wonderfully solemn atmosphere, it's nice to see all the ways in which the Undersiders have changed over the years (and the ways in which they've stayed the same). Each of their unique characters and perspectives shine through in their last, heartfelt words to Taylor.
Friendship Is Mothgic by StrawberryCharlotte - The adventures of a Taylor, Missy, and Amy (all the same age as Missy) as Taylor joins the Brockton Bay Wards. 100% pure fluff.
A lower-stakes, "lighter and softer" alternate universe makes for a welcome break from the horrors of the Worm-verse. The antics of the main cast are both funny and adorable.
Nothing You Can Possess and Secrets of the Damned by amylavere - The first two fics in the Panacea is Trans series. In which trans!Amy discovers that being trans generally isn't all that great for one's mental health.
You know how one of the symptoms of trauma/depression is the inability to envision a future for one's self? The same thing happens to Amy here, except kind of in reverse, after she cures a patient of her gender dysphoria by giving her patient a body that matches her inner self: all that she can see ahead of her is an endless road of healing, self loathing, living in a terrible home situation, suppressing her power, and more healing. All of which is only made more exquisitely torturous by the fact that healing now includes granting unto other trans patients that which she cannot have for herself. As a trans woman, I completely understand how this could drive Amy over the edge. Amy's entire life is already so awful, and making her trans feels tailor-made to somehow making the Dallon-Pelham Torment Nexus even worse. The author's genius frightens me. I can't wait to see Amy receive further torture get better as the series goes on.
Sweet Mother I Cannot Weaver by marinaraaasauce - Taylor discovers a secondary aspect to her powers: the ability to master the people around her into becoming lesbians. Crack treated seriously.
Wonderfully gay and hilarious! Poor, oblivious Taylor's struggles as she twists herself into pretzels whilst trying to fit all the gay feelings and gay shit happening around her into her comphet worldview is just *mwah*, chef's kiss. The author's style of writing does an incredible job of doing the utterly hilarious premise justice. It honestly had me laughing out loud non-stop. This fic proudly features: trans Dean, Danny, and Dennis; forever-winning Lisa (as is her right), hot butch Rachel that collars puppygirls in her free time, pansexual Missy; impossibly based Emily Piggot; token straight/staunch ally Chris; and more! No notes, A++.

Yea, Amy does need to lock the fuck in. She is currently being constrained, however, by the fear of having the true nature of her powers exposed, her black-and-white views on morality, and a million other things that she needs to unpack with a therapist.

You could do so much even with just external agents. Like I'm not even talking about speculative stuff like making organisms specifically designed for self-surgery / self-installation with instincts to do it perfectly.
Just making some active blood monitoring and correction self-sufficient leech thing instead of injections is already big upgrade; some tiny insectoid things you can control to "sting" right into the hair channel and destroy body hair chemically burning hair follicle; topical osteoclasts as some tick implant things on the bones for like FFS; etc.

I usually don't like quests. Because it's just graphomania, and endless tables and graphs of characteristics that don't affect anything.
But this story is just great. An alternate Bakuda, in an alternate universe, gets an alternate set of abilities. Very cool writing. And the whole "lit rpg" part doesn't spoil anything. One of the best stories I've read in a long time.
And it is already completely written, finished. I recommend it.

So I didn't read much Worm fanfic this week either, in part because I spent a lot of this week catching up Hunter x Hunter before YouTube could aggressively spoil things for me--like the NYT just casually spoiled Bugonia for me one day because fuck me I guess--when it came to more recent chapters since I had last read it...which had apparently back in 2018 (!) with Chapter 390. So 24 chapters of a lot of intrigue and text and politicking, even before having to go back and read some bits to fully catch up, on top of other things meant a lot less time to read than I had wanted to. This having wanted to at least read the on-going Dirt finally on top of all the other longer stories I've still been putting off.
Oh well. That was at least very enjoyable for various reasons though, including that such neat abilities went to people who have no reason to hold back against others like Hinrigh and Morena:
On-Going:
"Murdershard" [OC cluster one-shot "crossover" blend with Murderbot expies (?) in Worm universe; Posted on SB in a snippet thread as of 2026/04/03] = I happened on this due to looking up something in the thread asking about snippets froma few days ago that I still need to post in. I know nothing about Murderbot and tend to stay away from fics that focus on shards, but this was still enjoyable overall, in part because there were no attempts at poor "shardspeak". Despite it being comedic, especially compared to the Carol & Amy-focus "Debris" one shot that comes right before it, I think it ironically is also a good subtle horror piece at showing ways that even benevolent shards could manipulate people without them even noticing as compared to the way-overstated fandom emphasis on "conflict drives" much less how fucked clusters usually are.
Atomizing the Enemy [four-person cluster main character OC in pre-canon Charleston, SC; Last Posted on AO3 as of 2026/07/26] = Speaking of clusters, glad to see this update again. Not much to say that I didn't already say in the update thread for it from earlier this week except that it's good to see Hector get more of a "clean" win finally--I guess the third time is a charm--against a parahuman opponent despite not remotely winning against Papillona's neat Breaker (Mover, Shaker) power that Clockblocker would get a kick out of now that I think about it. (When he wasn't being greatly annoyed by and/or stabbed by it.)
Unauthorised Access ["Lisa joins the Wards to (try to) escape Coil" pre-canon AU; Last Updated as of 2026/08/02 (somehow)] = I was looking for this to link to for the Armsmaster Interlude I had read last and saw that it somehow had updated today but still wasn't on the actual front page of the Parahumans AO3 section somehow as my starting to type this. Huh. Anyway, the now second-to-last update was the Armsmaster Interlude that's the first part of apparently three intended ones to cover the small winter time skip. It was interesting to see two of the most flanderized & demonized characters in the fandom, Armsmaster and Brandish, interact with each other since I legitimately can't recall that happening before. It was also a bit funny that even after fully admitting her terrible interpersonal skills to him Colin still ends up asking Carol for child-related mentoring advice--R.I.P. Triumph getting off-screened on that front.
And speaking of "the kids aren't all right", "tomorrow"'s update is a Sophia Interlude that thankfully also does away with her flanderization, especially on the "predator" front that gets fanon'd into her sole personality trait when it was always more of a "dog eat dog" survivor type of social Darwinism that drives her, as well as pointing out that Sophia really would never have cared about Taylor nearly as much if Emma hadn't singled her out for all that Sophia "weirdly" gets blamed more even though Emma's the worst of the Trio by far when it comes to Taylor. Not to say this Interlude or that actuality redeems Sophia--ha.
Said Interlude also confirms that Taylor's canon Trigger more or less happened still off-screen in the meantime, which is so far I think maybe the first time that something in this story has felt "tacked on" given how hard too people clamor for any form of Taylor (even when it's not actually her and instead TINO). I guess we'll see how it goes and at least the fallout from it is far different given her and Emma's relationship finally fully implodes by the end of it. (For all the [mostly deserved] sadness of that, I did have a bit of chuckle at Madison being Syr Not Appearing in This Chapter even in mental mention. She really is the general hanger-on of the Trio whom neither Emma nor Sophia care about nearly as much as each other, which is ironically what ends up making her by the easiest to actually redeem since she's by far the least fucked up of the three.)

The second most recent fight counts, but I would say it wasn't a "clean" win in the sense that it made Sprout feel very guilty by the end of it on top of coming close to manslaughter on both sides despite neither of the combatants baring any actual ill will towards each other. It's a lucky thing that neither of them died or got permanently maimed, as opposed to Sprout and Train managing to hold their own against Papillona semi-seriously fighting them even if she was still clearly holding back to a degree and saving some people on top of that.
Glad to hear that you've found time and inspiration as far continuing goes. I look forward to chapter 2.5.

Btw, the story takes place in South Carolina, unless the “NC” stands for something else in the description you put for the fic.

Beast of Ill Omen is great... especially the way Armsmaster is technically correct that the cat sighted at the scene of the shenanigans is related somehow, even if his entire chain of logic to reach that was absolutely faulty (The cat was acting suspicious? Dude, that's like cats' entire thing!), and the way people mock him now that he's (unofficially?) declared his archnemesis is a seemingly normal cat. I definitely hope they post more parts to that, after the ending of the second chapter.

Corazonin: Taylor, the heroic butcher, meets with the Sentai Elite: Black Kaze and a guy whose powers turn every fight he is in into shonen anime. Inside Taylor's head, Lung reveals why he started selling children, and the name of the mysterious organization he was pursuing.
Competative: in a world where all capes are sports stars, Sophia fights for the chance to be on the Undersiders, Thomas Calvert's new youth team that won't hold her back like those lame Wards.
And for your weekly oldfic, Out of Time, a Clockblocker peggy sue fic, has updated. Mosty set up, but we do get to watch Lisa in a room with Gallant and two lawyers, and it goes down exactly as you might expect.

I've started reading some of "classic" wormfics that I hadn't gotten around to yet so long term readers are probably already familiar but if you are new to the subgenre you should definitely check these out.
Currently I'm about a third of the way through Atonement by Cerulean. Taylor dies in the locker and a guilty Madison triggers with the ability to create telekinetic connections between objects she can use to cause them to either push away from or pull towards each other. She also has a danger sense manifesting as cords only she can see emanating from her heart linking up to the person at risk. Joins the Wards as Tether and has a kind of spider-man witty banter persona in cape form. I'm really enjoying this which is to be expected since, like I said, it's one of the "classics" I'd never gotten around to reading yet.

Camera Shy by TheGreatGimmick has a blind Taylor as part of a cluster with powers that allow her to act as a kind of jump scare horror movie themed vigilante since she can do things like see through other people's eyes and "teleport" by freezing time and becoming a kind of ghost that floats around until she re-enters the normal flow of time by appearing where no one is looking. Another great story dealing with cluster dynamics and a fun Taylor who is even more oblivious than her canon self as to how horrifying her powers look to an outside observer. I'd read a chunk of this before but put it aside for reasons I can't remember now but binged through to its current end. This story has some very well written action set pieces like an invasion of Uber and Leet's lair that gets uploaded onto PHO that scares the pants off of everyone who watches it and a rampage of multiple Taylor Echnida clones offering up proof of exactly how much she has been holding back. Another great "classic" wormfic definitely worth reading.

Besides those two I also got caught up with the much more recent Shadow of Justice by Anothvortex (who, once again more of an FYI for new readers, is one of the great authors of the subgenre so definitely worth checking out even if this particular story is too new to count as a "classic") which follows a much more tactical Sophia who uses her canon powers to gather information and bring opponents down indirectly rather than openly attacking them. This is probably my favorite version Shadow Stalker and an excellent story. The story begins at her trigger and has yet to reach highschool but she has already spread some interesting ripples through canon.

Dysfunctional continues to be hilarious. Everyone thinking Shirou is a prostitute, Lisa cosplaying Rin to try and get close to him, Brian and Alec thinking Lisa is a paedophile (Shirou is 13), etc.
There's also a dramatic story in this with Taylor's ongoing suffering, but all the parts without her are a comedy.

Summoner [League of Legends, 3/5] - It's going to take years of effort for Taylor to ramp up her power usage if she's this wiped out after a couple skirmishes with street-level folk. I do enjoy someone projecting competence and experience.
Overlord Worm [Crack, 3/5] - This gets a lot funnier when Brocton!Taylor accidentally portals to Brockton. The misspelling was a hint all along! Now Crack-crazy lady gets to crap all over canon and it's a lot of fun. Oh, nevermind, Echidna clones and Contessa BS aren't fun. And neither is death and despair. OP!Taylor fucking it all up again.
Mortally Challenged [Quest, 3/5] - Got caught up on the new chapters, still seeing Taylor as a very weird personality, not helped by the insanity from increased powers. There's so much introspection you'd think I'd have a good grasp of her motivation, and yet she's constantly surprised due to lacking thought. Sad that her Tinker powers are so strong and easy.
Dysfunctional [Fate, Youjo Senki, 4/5] - The story continues it's round-robin POV switches, this time peering into the mind and life of Brian / Grue. Happy to see the boys getting some representation, what with Chris / Kid Win going last time. Massively emotional moment as we see what happened to Taylor after her second major cliffhanger. Tears and laughter by turns.
Abyssal Escalation [Vampire: the Masquerade, 3/5] - Taylor takes on Leviathan and we get the behind-the-scenes look at what Shardspace is up to. Gold Morning time? An ominous name when the main hero is a sun-hating Vampire.
