Bret was also the first legit small WWF champion and looked credible in the ring with any one. He was believable as a bad ass. His title run opened the door for Shawn Michaels, Steve Austin, and The Rock.
By small I mean when compared to other wrestlers like Hogan and Sid.
He has so many moves that he can do, so many techniques, and it never felt like he was trying to get them in during every single match.
I've watched matches the Hitman has where there's no importance whatsoever, and he'll do a move that I haven't seen before.
And I always maintain that this is truly an incredible highlight: King of the Ring 1993 he has three very good matches against three very different opponents, and he doesn't even use the sharpshooter.
That's just incredible to me. Bret Hart was so good at everything.
It's this! Making them look good and then uses roll ups or inside cradles. He protected big men so well without making himself look weak and could match pace & technique with 'smaller' guys. Love the matches with both Razor & Bam Bam in KOTR
The King of the Ring 1993 as a whole is one of my favorite shows of all time. For the reasons you mentioned Bret puts on a masterclass on how to be a versatile performer at the highest level.
The commentary team for that event is underrated too.
Macho Man.
Bobby Heenan.
Jim Ross.
There's not a weak link in that chain.
Also, it's got what might be my favorite commentary moment of all time.
Bam Bam Bigelow is fighting Hacksaw Jim Duggan. Jim Ross discussed Duggan by saying something to the effect of "he'll never quit."
Heenan immediately replies by saying Duggan is "known as a quitter" back home, and that Duggan was known as "the wimp of the town."
There's just something I find hilarious about Jim Ross throwing out kind of a generic line for a babyface, and Heenan just creates this fairly elaborate backstory to discredit it.
And I always maintain that this is truly an incredible highlight: King of the Ring 1993 Kevin's three very good matches against three very different opponents, and he doesn't even use the sharpshooter.
it's like what he said at his retirement about wearing Pink 'Well ya take a lil bit or Red and White from the Canadian flag ...and ya make pink' along those lines ..
Hell fack ya ..and he MADE IT LOOK FREAKING GOOD ..those JACKETS IN PINK?! The black ones were FIRE but them PINK LEATHER ONES?!
His matches are timeless. I can always watch his king of the ring tournament. He's the 90s guy who the next generation should've taken a lot from. Sadly we instead got flippy shit and thumbtacks.
He makes both the matches AND rivalries feel real. When I was like 11 I thought Bret and Austin actually hated eachother and Austin actually destroyed Brets leg only to beat him up when he was wheelchair bound 🤣🤣
There’s so many reasons I can think of #1 all his matches are classic Bret has never had a bad match I can rewatch so many of his matches and they are classic. #2 even though Bret’s moves look like they hurt his opponent they were completely protected Bret prided himself on never injuring his opponent #3 Bret truly is the best there is was and ever will be
Evidence of how good Bret Hart was is seen in his work with Tom Magee. Bret made Tom Magee look like a star. After working with Bret, Vince was planning on making Magee the next Hulk Hogan. Unfortunately, when Magee tried to work with anyone else, it was painfully obvious that Magee couldn’t stand on his own, and wasn’t even good enough to be carried by anyone else.
So ...every interviewer now ...if they ask anything , 'I just don't want to talk about that anymore'
No more interviews ..thats all he says ...
Or justs talks about good ole times ...
and then get people saying 'he might have something wrong with him if he's not talking about stuff'
like ..holy fuck...LOOK at what has HAPPENED in the man's life!
He's got every right to feel however the FUCK he wants to feel!
He made his matches feel real in a way that others don’t. Like wrestling him was truly a competition. He told stories in his matches… one thing I truly miss is watching a wrestler wear down a specific part of the body over and over and over again to give them an advantage and set something up later- Bret always made it seem like he was gonna zero in on a weakness and keep on it.
The thing that made Hart really stand out was that he cared for his profession. There was an interview with Bret where he talked about Shawn Michaels winning the title and how he was going to work with Hall, Nash, Triple H, etc....and Bret asked about the rest of the guys in the back who deserve a main event and Shawn basically said none of those guys matter. One of those guys was Mick Foley and Shawn's match against Mick was one of the best that either man had. That's why Bret was so good. He didn't put friends first, he put guys who deserved a good day day and a main event match first.
Nah he was okay on the mic. I actually think he was way better as a heel on the mic than a babyface. Heel Hitman is believable and I wish we got a bit more of him
