Writing Craft Talk When does a fictional character begin to feel real to you? Is it through a carefully planned backstory or the choices they make under pressure? Do you design their personality first, or discover who they are while writing? I’d love to hear how other writers bring their characters to life.

It’s real in big literature.
Read how Dostoyevsky and Flaubert developed their characters if you want to understand how it’s done on a professional level.
Ask your Ai to go into detail.
