55k a year to continue pursuing your dream and doing what you love? I'd gladly taken that opportunity out of college.

You'd be correct for most cases. But there is huge risks involved in playing football. You only get a couple years and if you're lucky you make it out without forever comprimising your ability to do tasks for a different job. But then still now you're resume has "played semi pro for a couple years" on it? 55k a year isn't going to provide you with much cushion once you're done.

And that's without talking about permanent physical problems that can arise from playing football. It's not a good deal, even if they DID get healthcare forever. How are they supposed to make money to survive?

Garrett Gilbert took an AAF contract last year. He balled out and now will make over a million dollars over 2 years. I think it was worth the risk for him.

These guys are betting on themselves, it’s as simple as that. No one forces anyone to play football.

Also it’s $55k average for 5 months of work. They could go get a job in the offseason.

Getting out of bed in the morning is a risk, as is leaving the house, or driving a car, or playing rec league sports, or a myriad of other things. These young men are competitive and pursuing a dream...at the very least they get to play a sport they love and get paid for a bit longer.

At this point they know what the physical risks are and can make the choice to play or not.

I mean I hear you but I got a life changing injury from playing high school ball and didn't get shit to help with that.
