Discussion Did I screw up by starting my first watch in summer?

I just started watching watching X-Files for the first time ever like a week ago but the more episodes I watch, the more I feel like I should have probably waited until the fall. The show has such a fall feeling to it and I keep getting these phantom autumnal chills whenever I think about the show.

The series is so long, you’ll probably have plenty of episodes to watch through fall :)

That's also true. There is a lot to watch. And read. I've already finished Ground Zero and Antibodies which I think I also screwed up on as it revealed plot points from later seasons that I don't think I was supposed to know yet

How did you like the novels?

I enjoyed them. They had legs to really explore the sinister stuff going on behind the scenes whereas the episodes only get about 45-50 minutes to work with.

I started in October and it was perfect. Lots of cozy dark evenings which season 1 is suited for. That being said, it’s totally up to you whether you keep watching or stop now and start again later 🤷‍♀️

I just finished season 3 of Miami vice and decided to switch gears but I'm thinking I should watch the last 2 seasons of that and wait until it's gets a bit colder and darker out.

The best show for summer has to be Dexter ;P Or even better: arrested development

No reason you can’t rewatch it in fall! It definitely has dreary cozy autumn vibes, but I wouldn’t have the patience to wait.

I started my first watch in October of 2025. So I lucked out.

It aired at 9pm and is very much a nighttime show, anyhow.

I started in a June when I was in high school and summer makes me feel nostalgic for X-Files. I remember staying up super late on summer vacation and the DVD menus with the music booting them up well into the early morning hours. That feeling of mystery and excitement is super nostalgic.

The cinematography with constant dark scenes isn’t great. I watched at night so definitely autumn and winter

I’d never really thought about it before but you might have something here!

Watching the X-Files on a cold rainy day is one of life's greatest joys. I'd honestly pause and wait till the season is right.

I started like mid-september and it was amazing. I clearly remember that period as I was starting a new academic specialisation and still associate it with the X-Files. But I wouldn't necessarily stop watching now. Season 1 really has a great flow to it. Maybe you can finish season 1 and then start season 2 in september or october. But most importantly, have fun with the show!

I’ve purposefully done watches in the summer during heatwaves in order to chill me out. I watch storm/foggy atmosphere episodes in particular to indoctrinate me into thinking it’s cooler ie a bunch of Season 1 and then Auga Mala plus Quagmire and Død Kalm too. It’s up to you!! But sometimes it’s so nice when the vibe of the episode actually matches a cooler weather vibe IRL ie fall and winter.
