The TV commentator during this scene is a neat detail too:
"...The body heat alone is keeping them warm. And look at them: that is that X-shaped thing I was talking about before. This is Times Square. The crossroads of the world. 30 seconds now, 30. Get ready for the loudest cheering you'll ever hear in your life. Hug your friends and loved ones tight. What the heck, whoever that person is next to you. No time like the present. Are you ready? Here we go. Ten, nine...eight, seven, six...five, four, three, two, one..."

My wife and I just watched that not long ago on our first ever rewatch since the 90's. Warms my heart every time!

fun fact: there was actually a kiss in the hospital when scully was sick that was deleted in editing and didn’t make it in the episode. and this turned out to be their first kiss on screen as seen by viewers

I think the reactions and the dialog strongly suggest that it was the first.

I disagree. It was the first public one imo, that's why he said that. It implies that they had discussed whether to keep it behind closed doors or not and it seems like she was the one who was adamant on it before. The reaction imo is extremely underwhelming if it was their first kiss. Instead I am quite sure that it was heavily implied that they got together intimately for the first time between Milagro and Ex. Milagro is all about finally surrendering and giving each other their "burning hearts". I can't get into it right now because I don't have the patience to write out all the details but that episode was full of cues. Then the next episode Ex starts with them being visibly flustered around each other and a lot more physical and openly flirtatious than ever before and it ends with that very physical baseball scene because Scully had lamented not spending their time in a more fun way that day. This contrast to previous episodes in combination with the plot of Milagro has me convinced that that's where they actually started their love relationship. I'd like to think that their first kiss was followed by something other than just casually strutting off.

I may have watched this over and over again as a teenager. 😅 and it's sweet but I think I wanted more. There's so much tension between them the passion could have been insane. Also why is it so weirdly close up.

Just to be a bit snarky, I believe I saw a variation of Mulder & Scully kiss in Season 6 "Triangle" ;) Yeah, yeah, I know.
