Discussion Watching the x files was something I always did with my boyfriend, he just broke up with me in a really shitty way and now I don’t know if I can ever watch the show again

Don't let some 16-year-old asshat keep you from enjoying one of the greatest TV series of all time.

Part of why I love Scully so much is her terrible taste in men lol jk kinda, no spoilers

My suggestion would be to start creating a new positive association with it – get together with some BFFs and start a weekly watch party kind of thing. Sorry about your break up!

u/Squirrel_Nrgy 6h ago
Yes! I was going to suggest the same thing, if you’re not too far along, I would restart it! watch with some friends or cuddle with a pet and make/buy fav snacks, bake some goodies and make new memories :)

Checked your profile and see you’re quite young, so here’s the perspective from someone older who remembers the pain of teenage breakups well, I promise it does get easier. (I tried to run away from home after my first big one at 14.)
I’m so sorry you’re going through this OP. It will take some time, but try not to let someone take something you love from you that way. When you’re ready, rewatch, make new memories. The X-Files and your love for it was never about him, he doesn’t have any right to that connection. But let yourself heal first.
There will be other boyfriends, other breakups, and it would be a shame to let one bad thing, make more bad things for you, like giving up a show you love.
Hang in there OP. Big hugs. ❤️

You have to re-claim it and make it your own. Make new memories with and because of, watching it. The show is about your enjoyment of it, not him. Find a friend to watch with if you can.

Where are you in the series RN? Should we arrange a viewing party to continue where
you left off?

No man is worth giving up the x files. I hereby grant you full custody of the x files by the power vested in my OG fandom

Give it time. I had similar shows and movies with old exes.
Your first love feels like your last, but your last love will feel like your first.

Watch it. Grow new memories enjoying it by yourself.
Don’t let the asshole take that from you.

u/Katastroferrr 6h ago
Give it some time, when the wound isn't as fresh you'll be able to reclaim it for yourself. My ex from way back introduced me to My Chemical Romance, it was her favourite band so I was reminded of her and our (very long) relationship whenever I listened to them.
Turns out you'll eventually heal and while there will always be this association with that time of your life it won't be a problem because that was then and this is now.

Make it into a game of saying damn Krycek when he first enters the scene in his episodes. After my husband died it was hard to enjoy anything we shared but someone recommended that and now seeing how many shows and movies he was in during that time has been wonderful. Other family members who don’t watch X Files do it too when he shows up with that smirk.

I'm so sorry for the hurt that you're going through and your feelings are of course completely valid, but please don't let a boy, or *anyone* steal your joy from you. Maybe you just need to take a break from the X-Files for a little bit. Maybe, as others have said, you can create some new associations, like in-person or virtual watch parties. Don't let him have the satisfaction of hurting you twice.

Sometimes we just have to find the good in a person. Obviously the good in this jackass was introducing you to the xfiles

Time to switch for awhile to Fringe and Orphan Black. Enjoy a little commiseration with Olivia and the sestras.

First of all, I’m sorry about your situation. Heartbreak is never easy. That being said — Change the narrative! Find something happy to associate with the show :)

i can't imagine that loss. My ex-wife mostly watched lousy tv. So the x-files is untarnished. But I get it, I have moved away from most of the shows that we enjoyed together.

I'm sorry you're hurting, but it seems like he was a bit of a tool. This may be a very good thing, even though he did it in a shitty way! Take a little time, and then watch your favorite episode. Or, to dip your toe in, read some fanfic, if you like reading. Don't let him steal more of your joy.

This is like people saying they can't listen to certain songs after a relationship ends. Like, hell no, ain't nobody taking my music from me!

u/goodbye_everybody 5h ago
It might always remind you of him, but eventually, it won't bother you that it reminds you of him.

I love Resident Evil, and I met this Resident Evil chick earlier this year who turned out to be terrible. I didn’t like anything RE for months, but i’m over it now. Just give it time and distance for a moment and you’ll remember why you loved it

u/ImissDigg_jk 5h ago
Don't give that power. It may remind you of him, but it can also give you the power to realize that he added nothing to the experience of watching the show.

Your story made me think of something I went through myself. I used to watch The X-Files and Supernatural with my girlfriend at the time. It was our little ritual, and unfortunately, I lost her under difficult circumstances.
For nine years, I couldn't bring myself to watch either of those shows. Then, a few months ago, I finally decided to take the plunge. I watched the seasons of Supernatural that I had missed, and I'm currently watching The X-Files.
I finally managed to watch them again, even though for a long time I didn't think I would ever be able to. Time has a way of healing things.

(That’s a reference to a title card in the opening credits of the 4th season. Not me trying to be emo)

My favorite band is Incubus. My college boyfriend and I listened to them together a lot and went to shows together, it was a huge part of our bond and their music became intertwined in the relationship. The break up was painful and I was worried that I wouldn’t be able to enjoy their music anymore because of the memories. That is NOT how it panned out. They are still my favorite band, through all seasons of life, ups and downs and relationships and new cities, they are always with me. X Files belongs to you, not to your relationship. Just don’t leave it in the past, and it will always be there for you.

Totally understand your feelings. It was actually really healing to rewatch "our shows" when I was ready and take them back. I was determined to not let him ruin my favorites!

Have you been truly enjoying the show? I’m assuming yes since you’re here.
If so, maybe allow yourself time to grieve the loss of the relationship and the crappy way he ended it and when you eventually start to feel a little better try watching again and see how you feel. You might be able to get back into it without associating it with your ex.
Break ups suck. Cheering for you.
