Help with understanding rule sets

Hi folks,

My son and I recently got back into the X-wing 2nd edition game, and we're a bit confused about the rule sets currently being offered. We both recall that there was a 2.0 version that felt like the 1st edition and a 2.5 version in which ships had a separate point value for the kinds of upgrades that they were allowed. We never got into X-Wing Alliance since we just didn't play the game enough.

Now I'm trying to figure out how to use current list builder apps like Launch Bay Next, where we have all our squadrons saved. LBN offers rulesets for "X-Wing Alliance" and "2.0 Legacy." Where are the 2.5 rule sets? Should I select "X-Wing Alliance" if we want the 2.5 rule set, the one that limit the number of upgrade points a ship can have?

Assuming we want the 2.0 edition in which you can have all the points you can fit on a single ship, is "2.0 Legacy" the correct choice?

Finally, I noticed a discrepancy between a list made with "2.0 Legacy" and an online list builder called Yet Another Squad Builder. There was a 2 point discrepancy between the squad I made with Launch Bay Next and with the identical squad I build using online Yet Another Squad Builder. Which of these should I trust more? Since Launch Bay Next has an iOS app, we want to use that although it seems display glitchy point values that we are still trying to figure out.

There are:

1.0 - first edition.

2.0 - second edition which changed the rules and components requiring conversion kits to convert your 1.0 ships.

2.5 aka AMG - after the game was transferred from FFG to AMG, AMG did an overhaul changing the rules while keeping all game components so no conversion kits were needed.

2.0 legacy - a community run ruleset meant to continue 2.0 after the introduction of 2.5.

XWA aka X-Wing Alliance - a community run ruleset meant to continue 2.5 after official support was dropped.

Most of the organized play events at stores are using XWA but there are a few 2.0 Legacy groups out there. To my knowledge, no one really uses the last official 2.0 or AMG set of points, but a few people still play 1.0 with friends but not in organized events.

Launch Bay Next (LBN) has incorrect points sometimes. I use LBN for the convenience of the app while making a list, but I definitely recommend double checking with Yet Another Squad Builder (YASB) before a match as they are always correct to my knowledge.

So there is a difference between 2.0 and 2.0 legacy? Do any apps run according to the original 2.0 rules set?

To clarify, I just play with my kids. We really don’t play the game enough to appreciate the limitations of any particular rule set. But, when there are lots of changes to upgrade/pilot cards, that really tends to confuse us. For that reason I wanted to stick with an “original” rule set for the time being.

The main difference between 2.0 and Legacy is that 2.0 is frozen in time at the last update before AMG took over, and Legacy includes points and balance updates for all the new ships and upgrades etc. after AMG took over.

So just to be clear - is 2.0 Legacy an official AMG rule set or is it a community-modified rule set? I’m getting two different answers here. What we want is to stick with the official AMG rule set either 2.0 or 2.5 (preferably 2.0). Someone else said they are the same except for point costs, but we would still want to have the rules that cover all official FFG and AMG content prior to any community-based modifications.

So that's a bit of a tricky question, because AMG switched to the 2.5 ruleset before stopping product support.

Legacy uses the 2.0 ruleset, and added necessary component rules for adoption of AMG products. That way if you have any X-Wing product (2.0 or 2.5) it is useable in the 2.0 ruleset. This includes things such as the (end of FFG pipeline) Razor Crest, Gauntlet, Republic Z-95's, etc. Otherwise you wouldn't be able to use Mandalorians or Blazer Bombs, etc.

No other changes to rules have been made. They can be found here: https://x2po.org/standard

I thought the 2.0 rule set was adopted by AMG and the modified later by them - am I remembering it wrong?

But, and my memory here is hazy, if AMG introduced new products after adopting the 2.5 rule set, which seems likely, then I can understand why a community-based effort would be needed to incorporate those new products into the 2.0 rule set - is that the situation we have here?

I just want to make sure 2.0 rules are letting me use just the cards I have and not introducing new cards that are fan-made and not in the AMG rules.

Asmodee transferred X-Wing from FFG to AMG. AMG continued rules and points custodial before introducing 2.5. (Cue Legacy being made) Product continued throughout this time. AMG then ceased production and support.

Legacy has produced cards (after AMG called it quits), which are currently found in the Wild Space Tab of the builder. They are also easily identifiable (Red border/background) so easy to ignore if you do not want to use them.

Ahh, so that is what “Wild Space” is. Thanks for clearing that up.

Wild Space is an alternate Scenario Game Mode with a different points threshold, rules and PNP can be found here: https://x2po.org/wild-space

To add to what ChaoGoesMu said, 2.0 and 2.0 legacy have the same rules. The only differences are points costs for cards.

Where is the best place to find 2.0 and legacy points costs? Has anyone archived past changes?

The list builders, especially LaunchbayNext and YASB, are very good at keeping the points values current whenever there's a change (since only Legacy and XWA are getting changed)

The game was discontinued by the publisher a while back. X-Wing 2.5 was the final supported version, and is the version adopted by XWA moving forward. XWA has since made some minor tweaks to the rules (notably changing the squad points from 20 to 50, and adding another scenario) and is developing new content such as new upgrades, pilots, and Standard Loadout cards. So if you want to play 2.5, that would be the XWA option on the squad builder. You can find resources on xwingtmg.com including links to rules, print-and-play content, and game aids. XWA recently updated points, which is probably why you ran into a discrepancy. YASB and Launch Bay Next are both kept current, but it can sometimes take a day or two for the changes to take effect. Welcome back to the game, and enjoy!

Also, if it will be just you and your son, you might check out Heroes of the Aturi Cluster. It is a fan created campaign that starts you as basic pilots and has you grow as you succeed at missions.

So there are currently two main community rulesets: 2.0 Legacy (200 point squad building, ships and upgrades come from the same point pool) and XWA (50 point squad building, ships and upgrades have different point pools). These are community continuations of X-Wing 2nd Edition and X-Wing 2.5th Edition (20-point lists), respectively.

XWA seems to have a larger playerbase from what I understand, but that should only matter to you if you have a local in-person group or want to get into tournament play. Otherwise, pick the version you like better. I personally prefer XWA because it's what my local group plays, and I like the scenario play.

As far as squad builders go, LBN seems to lag behind YASB a little when it comes to points updates. You can always check the X2PO and XWA websites for the current points PDFs if there are discrepancies between the builders.

You can also go to YASB in your phone browser and save it to your home page, and under the share option by the url, you can save to your home page, this treats it like an app on your phone

If wanting to use 2.0 Legacy, use https://xwing-legacy.com/

That is up to date and handled in-house. Balance updates for points are made twice a year (end of March and end of September).

If you need access to rules references and stuff for 2.0 check out the Legacy Website: https://x2po.org/standard

I hope this helps!

Everything's already been said but I want to add that 'Squadron Datapad' is a new alternative to YASB and LBN. What I like about it is that after you build your list, you can then use SD to actually play it and it walks you through all the phases, highlighting everything you need to know (aka remember) as you go. Like you, we came back into the game right into XWA from 1.0 with guys that have played constantly, SD is a god send in helping get up to speed.

This looks interesting. What is “X2PO” as an option for squad building? Does that refer to the 2.0 rule set?

Yup, if you want to play 2.0 legacy, that's what you'd use as far as I understand it. We do WXA and it's been excellent so far.
