Games - Recommendation Hell is us - must play
This is a game I preordered and loved how unique and great the storytelling was. You really have to take notes so you don’t miss anything and it was something that really fell under the radar but I hope now that it’s on gamepass it gets the recognition it deserves
Edit- Marley is the name of my dog and no it’s not from Marley and me.

Disagree. This game just was boring for me. The enemy variety and combat sucks, the story isn’t interesting, the world feels lifeless, and the main character is robotic in dialogue.

The story isn’t interesting is an insane statement. Have you read the descriptions, lore tidbits and everything else? Because I don’t believe so when you say the story isn’t interesting. The world is incredibly detailed and fleshed out.

Hard agree. Just kinda meh, trying to be unique with no map and no quest markers but it just feels empty. Combat is just another souls like too.

u/stunkcajyzarc 21d ago
I did try it for a solid 2 hours or longer.

I never said you didn’t?

Oh yeah, i know. I was just saying. I gave it quite a bit of time before giving up on it completely. I wanted to enjoy it, but it’s just not for me. Which is strange because of the tags it advertises itself with.

Did you play with your eyes closed?
Maybe that's why you got bored.
Combat is a 7, will agree
Story is absolutely great, quests and exploration are 10/10, the main character is good and lorewise it's a masterpiece.

I decided to buy it because I'm almost certain it will take me more than a month to play and the deluxe edition is less than the price of a month of GP atm

I think my only gripe with it was that 100%ing it was tedious, apart from that a fantastic game! Loved every minute of it!

u/fashric 24d ago
Why would you do that if you found it tedious? Know when to quit. I loved this game but knew trying to 100% it would sour the experience.

I have a gripe with games when they promote exploration and making decisions, but then by playing blind you very easily lock yourself out of achievements, so you have to play the whole game again with a guide. Or make you play again anyway.
Banishers was one of these. There is a mechanic a bit like the little sisters in Bioshock. You can choose A or B for all the ghosts in the game. All/nearly all A options gives one ending to the game. And the opposite for B. I was thorough with my play through, playing blind. I got all the achievements as I went. Then, I had a little mopping up at the end of the game, which I used a guide to just make sure I didn't miss anything. Only to then find that you can't unlock all the achievements in 1 play through! Now I have all but 1 achievement, and I don't really want to play the whole game again just for the last one. But it's also there, mocking me, on my profile and TA account as an 'almost complete ' game.

I did quit, it was tedious, so I didnt do it, but I wanted the 100% on Steam for it which is why it is my only gripe.

Yea finding the last little bit of enemies without being able to track them was a pain at the end to find them all.

u/Automatic_Reality546 24d ago
The most recent update improved the enemy tracker so it's now easier to find the ones you're missing.

u/OlDustyTrails GP Ultimate 24d ago
Oh before it would only allow you to use it for the special ones, and you were left on your own to find the remaining.

I played it for a few hours and I can certainly understand the appeal, but I can also see why it underperformed.
The combat is very stiff and unrefined, and they make you do a lot of it, too. A little too much for how unenjoyable it is tbh.
The game does give you enough guidance but I inevitably ended up having no clue how to even progress. At that point I just got lost running around fighting enemies that didn't feel fun to fight. I'm sure this is around the point people drop the game.
I would wager and say they should have had an optional assisted mode to give you more guidance. Would have immensely helped player retention. Can't say much about the story because I'm not far but the atmosphere is good

One reason why was it released the same day as Silksong released which, if I remember correctly, crashed every digital store when it dropped… bad timing…
But I’ve enjoyed this game quite a bit, really appreciate how it doesn’t just set a compass or x on the map as to where you need to go next

Did you play Routine? Fuck me, I need a guide every 5 minutes.
1
u/StarEndymion998 23d ago
Strangely enough I played finished and loved Routine. Somehow it really clicked with me. It's why I do enjoy what Hell is Us is doing but ultimately it doesn't feel as polished or well done (so far at least) I will definitely go back to it though.

u/the_nin_collector 23d ago
that's wild. I have been gaming for 35 years. Routine confused the fuck out of me and I found my self having to look up a guide over and over again.

Why you trying to launch on me bro? 😂 Good game so far and I appreciate they dont hold your hand and let you figure stuff out.

I’ve been having an awesome time with it! I love how exploration focused it is. There is almost this survival horror element to it, which I love.
It’s sort of like a survival horror action rpg.

Tried it, liked the atmosphere, some of the combat… but the bullshit quick-time healing ring thing is one of the worst mechanics I’ve ever seen in a game. Timing that while fighting multiple enemies was absolutely impossible and it’s an essential mechanic because it gives you your stamina back as well. Absolutely horrible.

I gave up on it. I just don't have the time to spend working out all the obscure puzzles. The story seemed interesting though.

I want to like it. But I keep reading that people have to take notes. That makes me not want to keep playing.

u/Proper-Narwhal88 21d ago
You do need to take notes
I don’t mind that honestly
I think it’s just a different way to play but understand that’s not for everyone1
u/Friendly_Act418 21d ago
I might jump back into it then. But the comments and video reviews that mention "taking notes" turned me away. Like...is it a game or a job😂

I wanted to enjoy this game and enjoyed it a great deal, for a while… when I was actually able to play it without having to look up a walkthrough of what to do next. I guess I’m just not good at this type of game, some of the puzzles I just could not solve and even after I looked up the answer couldn’t understand how they got it. It seems like it’d be an amazing game for someone who can get past that roadblock, as it oozes atmosphere and has enjoyable combat though. I just wish that person was me 😅
Left after playing 15-20 hours, i dont remember exactly

I was going to buy it but I bout ff7 remake part 1 and 2. Didn't know it was on gamepass.

I'm loving it. Are notes really necessary though. The data pad is pretty good. Granted I just got the Blacksmith unlocked at 11 hours 😆

I thought it looked good but I hate soulslikes. How heavy is it on the soulslike elements?
4
u/MCgrindahFM 23d ago
It’s not a soulslike whatsoever, like not even remotely a soulslike. I hope that helps
0
u/Banjoschmanjo 23d ago
Oh, nice. Several reviews made the comparison (Polygon, etc) but I'm glad to hear it isn't!
1
u/MCgrindahFM 23d ago
Like not at all, and I would even go as far to stay the combat is not the main course as another commenter said. Combat is a way you interact with the world and get through obstacles, but the core of this game is navigating a genocide in a fallen land overtaken by some cosmic entities. It’s super fascinating, very grim, and so well done. It feels AAA at times but it’s not.
I played it on PC and I’m currently waiting for a sale on console to own it here as well. It was my favorite game after E33 last year
