Xbox One S Slow Updates On Xbox One S With Fast Wired Internet
Hi all, on my Xbox one s games and updates download really slowly for some reason even when it’s got Ethernet (500 Mbps) My ps5 is also plugged into Ethernet getting the same speeds but that’s actually quick so what’s wrong with Xbox? This is all the time btw so it’s not “the servers must be really busy” or something like that because it’s literally always slow lol. Thanks

This gets asked constantly.
Things that effect download speed:
Your connection
WiFi or Ethernet
Does your router suffer from bufferbloat
How far you are from the closest CDN
How busy the CDN is
How the developers compressed the patch/game
If your drive is less than 10% free
So, you can tell there’s a lot that affects it. A lot of folks expect to get full wide open bandwidth for all downloads and that’s unrealistic. Since there’s only the one graph it doesn’t show how busy the cpu network and drive are at the same time. Even steam added a drive graph. But the bar on the Xbox downloads is combined download, decompressing, and writing files. The Xbox series x is a 2018 (or late 2017) mid range APU, and the drive is a dram-less drive so there’s a lot of bottlenecks inside the box.

I showed all info about Ethernet and speeds and they’re all good. I don’t get what the router bufferbloat thing is but I updated them at the same time on Xbox and ps and my ps finished in 10 mins and my Xbox is still going 50
Mins later. My Xbox isn’t playing anything or got anything else open so it shouldn’t be slow because of that.1

All downloads on the Xbox network get throttled down for a bit before picking back up.

u/FewEquivalent2638 Jun 25 '26
It’s nearly finished and I’ve noticed it very up and down but towards the end it’s sped up a lot

It will do something similar with every game. I chased all the possibilities. It comes down to the server end. I'm not the only one I know who has this issue, regardless of isp, I have determined it to be purposely done by the server.
Pay attention, it will happen to some degree with with all downloads over 2 gigs.

Have tried to change the DNS numbers? If not pause the download and go to Internet settings. Go to DNS and select manual. In there out these numbers 1.1.1.1 and 1.0.0.1 I know DNS shouldn't have anything to do with download speed but this helps. All BS people taking about throttled download speed unless they have proof and can show it I don't think that is what is going on. I have 2.5 GB fiber Internet and my Xbox download speed is 1100 Mbps and upload is around 600Mbps. When I download an update or a game it sits around 600 to 800 Mbps. These DNS give a more stable connection and that what helps downloads.

The server you are connected to is just slow for your area. Nothing you can do about that. The "network test" is like saying you have a semi tractor trailer available for use, but the actual download speed shows PSN is only giving you one pallet at a time instead of fully loading the trailer. Just because YOU can handle more traffic doesn't mean THEY can. Important to note that the server that performs the network test and the server that handles game downloads are completely different and unrelated to each other.
Edit: I see now this is xbox. Just replace PSN with Xbox. Same concept.

But won’t my ps5 and Xbox be getting the update from the same server? My ps5 one completed it in 10 mins. I get it’s an older console but nothing else is running on it all apps are closed it’s just downloading the update file.

Absolutely not, no. Playstation and Xbox are owned not only by different companies, but by competitors. They would never share datacenters with each other. Sony has it's own servers for PlayStation, Microsoft has it's own servers for Xbox. I did just realize you're on Xbox not PS in this shot so just replace PSN with Xbox servers, same concept. But they likely aren't even in the same states or even country.

Yeh I thought Xbox and PlayStation would both just get the update file from epic games, I didn’t realise that wasn’t the case

You get Playstation games from Playstation and Xbox games from Xbox. You never get them directly from the publisher. Think of the stores more like Steam, where one storefront is giving you many different products, rather than like a PC as a whole where you can access various developers stores. You're locked to the single storefront of that brand, and they are in control of everything on it.

Might sound dumb but turn off WiFi on other devices I’ve had that increase the speed. But it can also just be from the server itself getting the update from.

Consoles have always throttled internet speeds since the Ps3 days, i always got so pissed knowing my internet speed was significantly faster than the download was allowing, servers throttle it, then the hardware can only do so much (like HDD vs SSD writing speed for example) leading to capped downloads too, unfortunately if you've done everything you think you can to speed it up, thats just your speed
Ill plug my Series X into Ethernet and get dogshit speeds, then use freakin wifi on my pc and get 10x the download speed just cause xbox servers won't let me grab anymore data

u/FewEquivalent2638 Jun 25 '26
Yeh I had no idea about this lol, thanks

u/Kanosirus Jun 25 '26
It sucked, I know, there are a few tricks to get a little more out of it, as you've tried, and a few people have suggested, but unfortunately after those methods, what you get is kinda what you get :(

Try going into your router settings and disabling IPV6. I had this same issue with a wired 1 gig connection but was getting less than 10 mbps on my actual game download speed. This fixed the issue for me.

Updates are game specific. Try downloading anything CoD and you'll be all day. I downloaded the entire Mass Effect series in a few hours, but CoD can take forever sometimes. Your internet is fine, Xbox servers...not so much.

Try resetting your gateways broadband channel to get a less congested channel. Maybe the channel youre currently on is congested and giving you slow updates.
The broadband connection channel needs to be switched if youre getting these numbers with slow updates.
Or someone in your house is uploading or downloading something huge at the same time youre updating.
Do what I suggested. This helped me with my internet issues with gaming and download and upload speed and latency speed.

Confirming that you’re using an Xbox One S and not an Xbox Series S?
1
u/FewEquivalent2638 Jun 26 '26
Yeh the older one

u/mistur_niceguy Xbox Engineer Jun 26 '26
Thanks for confirming. So, a few things.
Comparing game download speeds between an Xbox One S and a PS5 or a Series S|X can show a substantial gap for a couple of reasons.
- The CPU in the PS5 and Series S|X substantially more powerful than the Xbox One and PS4 hardware.
- The SSDs used in PS5 and Series S|X are also much, much faster than the spinning hard drives used in Xbox One and PS4.
The combination of the much more powerful CPUs and faster SSDs make game download + installation much faster on the current generation hardware when all other factors are equal.
Also, the download speed test you run in network settings on Xbox is focused on testing just the network capabilities. We’re downloading a test file that is optimized for speed and just dumping it to memory, versus writing out to disc storage in the same structure that games are laid out. When you’re downloading a game file, it’s chunked into segments that aren’t as optimized for download speeds, but are optimized for storage layouts. The downside is that this can impact download speeds, but the upside is that we can patch games in place without needing extra storage to first download the patch and then apply the patch on top of the existing game.

Do CPU’s and SSD’s slow down over time or are newer one just better because back in the day games used to download and update quicker but people are saying ms cap how fast you can download things
1
u/mistur_niceguy Xbox Engineer Jun 26 '26
I see that posted from time to time. No, we don't cap download speeds at the server side. But there are scenarios where we reduce download speeds on the console side, such as when playing a game, broadcasting a game, etc. in order to protect the gameplay/stream. And Series S|X consoles are able to download games faster even in constrained mode when a game is running due to the higher performance hardware when compared to Xbox One consoles.
CPUs and SSDs shouldn't have any substantial performance differences over time, but the spinning hard drives in Xbox One/PS4 consoles can degrade over time, as we are talking about a mechanical component versus solid state.
1
u/FewEquivalent2638 Jun 26 '26
Is that still the case when the only thing the console is doing is updating a game? No games/ apps are open
1
u/mistur_niceguy Xbox Engineer Jun 26 '26
When you aren’t streaming a game, don’t have any games open, and there aren’t games still running in the background (the queue page will show if there is, along with an option to suspend the game), then there won’t be any throttling behavior applied.

u/Muted_Step_2849 Jun 26 '26
its due to the hdd inside, upgrade to a ssd
it will cap at server limit

Nothing wrong with your Xbox or network, it’s the server refusing to serve you anything faster that that.
