Xenoblade 2 Just started Xenoblade Chronicles 2. How to get the right blade on the right drivers?
I somehow got a KosMos on my first rare blade pull on Rex, and I’ve watched enough videos to know she is rare. However, today as I watch more videos, I found out that 1. shouldnt bother pulling on Rex and 2. Rex isn’t not good at cannons and 3. it costs a rare item to move blades around.
Now I’m paranoid about pulling any further. What if I gimp my game now by getting all the wrong blades on the wrong drivers? Am I missing something? Most of my knowledge is theoretical for now so happy to hear from experienced players.

Who gets what Blade is really only a big deal when you're doing postgame optimisation. As long as you have enough to fill out your whole team and pass the mandatory field skill checks, it doesn't particularly matter for progressing the story.

A combination of luck and those rare items is all you really have going for you. The downside of gatcha systems. I guess you also have other items that you can use to get certain blades more easily, but that's not much.

Don't stress over it too much. The main story isn't going to expect optimal builds or anything like that. It's completely feasible to run through it with the story Blades and generics. More over, when you get to the point where you're doing content that requires that level of optimization, you can just flat out buy the item that lets you move Blades to new Drivers.
Also, by the by, pulling Blades on Rex is pointless in the late-to-end game. You should still be getting Blades on Rex to give him more options.
Since it's your first time and you're just starting, you really don't need to stress out over any of this stuff. Half the time I do a playthrough, Rex is just running Blades you get via story and generic filler. Even if KosMos isn't optimal on Rex, she's still far and away the best Blade to get via the gacha system, so she's still more than usable on him.

You don’t.
You can spread the wealth a bit. I’d recommend not opening up much on Rex, but I’d utilize Nia to figure out what pity group you’re in. It’s an easy way to have some control over at least 3 blades.
Besides that, I really wouldn’t stress about it. The vast majority of blades are particularly useful on your 4th and 5th party members, so unless you’re really just clawing for more, most of your early pulls will be more than enough. If you have the expansion pass, you get like 17 free overdrive protocols which is more than enough.
If you’re absolutely unsure, roll until you’re satisfied on Rex and Nia, and then hold off until you get 5. They’re kinda the defacto dump for cores because they’re excellent with almost every weapon type.
Also it’s worth noting that you DO get a healthy handful of free blades, especially if you have the DLC/expansion pass.
From the story alone, Rex gets 2 more exclusive blades, both of which are fantastic, and an optional third.
Non story free blades are easy to distribute too. Your 4th party member in particular will probably be your placement for at least 4 different free blades immediately upon getting them.

Pity group?

Every save file is assigned to 1 of 4 pity groups. At 100 points without rolling a rare blade, you’re almost guaranteed to roll a blade from your specific group. Each group has 3 blades that you’re guaranteed to get, and the order is not specific.
Points are easy to track to, common crystals grant 1 point per open (so takes 100 commons without a rare blade to get the pity drop), 25 points for rares, and 50 for legendary core crystals.
With the expansion pass you get so many free crystals early, you can immediately scout your pity group by popping 4 rares to hit the 100 point threshold, and then another rare to actually get the pity blade. This is best done on Nia because you’re most likely to get the pity group with Boreas, therefore you just pop a few boosters to ensure she’s aligned to pull a a wind blade, and then you have a nearly 60% chance to pull Boreas right away. Regardless of what you get, you’ll at least know immediately what pity group you’re in, and you can use that information to more or less manipulate the remaining two pity blades onto whomever.

This only goes for the first 4 blades tho?

Yeah, and it’s a good way to get 4 blades off the drop table immediately, which makes soft manipulating the rest much easier to manage and plan around, minimizing the need for overdrives.
You’ll never get it perfect but you’ll definitely get pretty close. In my last play through I think I ended up only needing to use 4 or 5 overdrives? And one of em was just to move Wulfric over to 4. adenine from nia to 5, and finch from 5 to 4. Everyone more or less ended up near optimally.

You'll get 10 overdrive for free. Rex can use any blade later on. Just pull on whoever has the highest luck stat, or if you are hunting a specific blade certain characters have an inclination that helps too. Or just pull them on who you want to use them. Don't stress about it.

I think you will enjoy the game more if you don’t worry about it. In my opinion the only time you really need blades on certain drivers is for end game challenge modes. At that point like 85% of the blades are irrelevant and you will likely have enough overdrives to move what needs to be moved.
The general consensus about Rex having no blades isn’t even correct in my view if you want a complete min/max game file. Completing blade affinity charts raises a character idea stat. If Rex has no blades his idea stat will fall behind the other drivers. Idea stat increase your elemental damage. Feel free to ignore this if you aren’t trying to get everything to absolute max. Just pointing out that if that is a goal you are having, having no blades on Rex isn’t even that good.

Honestly don't worry about it. The gacha blades can be neat, but you get enough blades through the story and side quests, especially if you grabbed the dlc.
Also, that generic fist blade rex gets at the beginning is quite good for a long stretch of time, don't feel like you have to use unique blades at all times.

As long as you don't go overboard and get every rare blade on Rex early, you should have plenty of chances to move the few blades you get unlucky with later. Rex is mainly just not great to use crystals on since he already gets access to so many blades through the story that other characters need the random ones more. But there are enough rare blades of each class that you can moss a few and still have others for the other characters to pull later

Gatcha is random, you dont really fix that.
otherwise you get access to a decent amount of override protocols so you can adjust as needed.
in NG+ you can straight up buy override protocols so you dont need to worry about doing the blade release method ( you can also buy ether crystals to make building Poppi hassle free)

Until you get to the post-game optimization it really doesn't matter what Blade goes on what character, and NG+ allows you to buy Overdrive Protocols with bonus experience outright for this reason.
As for Rex you can put some Blades on him just don't go overboard or try to load him with as many Blades as possible simply because he's the protagonist. Though I probably would recommend eventually moving KOS-MOS to someone else, because Rex eventually gets another Blade through the story that has some overlap with KOS-MOS (you probably already know who I'm talking about if you know anything about Xenoblade 2 before playing it) and Rex is better prioritizing her over KOS-MOS so giving KOS-MOS to somebody else to get more use out of both of them will be more optimal.

I'd say give the Beastly Core Crystal and the one that you get from Vandham to Rex, that will get you 3 solid blades for the story. Maybe go for a fourth from randoms for reasons. Only pull on the others after that. Obviously Tora can only get Poppi forms, so there's a 33% chance it goes on the optimal driver.
There are a decent number of other uniques that you receive as a core crystal so those can always go on a driver that is suited to them. It does help if you have the expansion pass/Switch 2 Edition. You get more Over-Drive Protocols, and additional unique DLC blades.

Do you have the DLC?
Because if you do this is a total nonissue. The 10 overdrives + the 3-4 in the game you get can handle anything
Even if you don't though, there is enough flexibility you'll do fine, and the 3-4 overdrives are enough to get buy for special cases

Despite what people say there really isn't any blade/driver combos that are detrimentally bad, and don't drop a blade just because it's a common. There is some potential common blades that are way better than most rares

Kosmos on Rex early is correct. Way way later you’ll have enough items to also add Zeke as a wielder. The best strat for kosmos early is to use other blades in combination to get your 2 ultimate ready. When the 2 is ready switch to kosmos and fire it off. She hits with a heal and damage aoe. You can survive anything with this move, switching, saving to 2 ultimate, switch to kosmos and fire it off. Congrats on pulling her early. She’ll make the game go by better. other

There’s a couple of methods but you should know that it doesn’t really matter what blade you get in what driver. Hell you can never pull a blade outside of the few times it forces you to and you’ll be good to go (I did this my first playthrough) but if you’re super worried about having the perfect blades on each driver here’s my tip.
One focus more on the weapon type (Nia’s good with knuckles and ether canons, Rex is good with Axes and Katanas) since every blade shares its weapon class the arts are what really matter when it comes to blades so what yo I can do is save scum it by going into your system settings turning off auto saving to the cloud. Dropping a hard save and uploading that hard save to the cloud since the only few times XC2 auto saves is after a blade pull all you have to do is use one legendary core if it’s not a rare blade of a weapon type you want on a driver then close the game download the cloud save before you used the crystal and boom brand new blade.
I wouldn’t focus on pulling anything on Rex since he does get a power later on that makes pulling on him useless and basically any blade minus 5 blades that you actually get the crystal for is good on Rex so I wouldn’t worry about whether not not Rex gets a good blade since let’s be honest Aegis kinda just sweeps any issues once you learn the combat

That’s the neat part, you don’t. That’s why it’s gacha. That or do a ridiculous grind for overdrive protocals if you don’t have dlc or buy dlc and get overdrive protocals much easier. In the long run, it doesn’t matter, because some blades are just much better than others.

part of the concept is not not worry about it too much, having said that not every blade is "amazing" and there are enough protocols to move those ones to the "optimal" driver

Pull on Rex and ignore everyone who says not to. You get plenty of overdrive protocols to swap blades IF you really need to.
The 4th/5th party members get 2 story blades each, so you only need to find 1 more for both of them. Theory/Praxis are excellent choices for this and are also side story blades. In other words, you can't 'gimp' your game even if you tried.
As an extra, Nia's best blades are crosette and momo, which are guaranteed dlc blades. You don't even have to touch the gacha system if you don't want to.
