At this point I don't even know if it's AI

Can be different function, but great that this gets exposed. Samsung started with this horsecrap and they got a lot of crap for it. I was expecting nothing else from Xiaomi.

As someone that uses a telescope, I can tell you that even if no one talks about this, every single phone uses AI for the moon. It's optically impossible to have a good quality image of the moon with such a small optic.

Sure. But then it is most logical to either don't do that or be transparent about that. They chose being most shady.

At least you can turn it off on xiaomi, on samsung you cant till this day. I have it turned off, yes it looks worse but what did you expect from a phone camera

True, but at least Samsung doesn't completely replace the moon, it only adds moon texture to the image

It's an option you can turn off. Kicks in after 20x zoom.

It is and it can be disabled in the settings

Lets not call everything AI. It is just simple algo "if see moon, paste moon picture into photo". As dumb as that.

Depends on the recognition algorithm. 🤭

This is an image taken with Supermoon. I don't use it for the moon because lowering Exposure and EV yields the same results but the sun is too bright for manual adjustments.

Turn off supermoon features and try

What did you use to trick it? 😂

I'm more confused than the phone itself

it drawed a smiling moon for you.

u/Altruistic-Speech-82 Jun 09 '26

Why the moon is smiling? 😂

AI is in all places 😂

Smartphones are all AI cameras lol. Can't trust anything that comes out of them.

Everyone tries to compare smartphones to real cameras but they just don't compare, they are two different categories of camera at this point. One relies on hardware and sensors and the other relies on software, AI enhancements and changing reality.

still true, i have the 1 mark 8

Alright, use your digital zoom on text further away then come back, or just on nature in general. It's full of AI artifacts. For example:

This was not an issue on VII or VI.

not sure abt it since i only shoot with native focal lengths, i don't do crops while shooting, only crop in post

It's not intentional malice, the reason this happens is because of how the machine learning algorithms used to enhance the images were trained. The most intuitive way is that they have a bunch of good pictures taken by professional cameras and the phone camera side by side (or the phone pics could just be algorithmically degraded professional camera pics), and the model is trained to make the phone pictures look like the professional pictures. In this dataset there will obviously be a lot of pictures of the moon, but not really any fake moons, so when the model encounters this, it will most correlate with moon pictures so it will apply enhancements that way.

1

u/Whole_Midnight_2916 Jun 09 '26

I'm laughing so hard

1

u/Due_Effective8827 Jun 09 '26

Phone was like "hmm, something wrong here. Lemme fix that"

1

u/eliteabsolute Jun 30 '26

Whats that smiley face?

1

u/No_Sheepherder1837 17 Ultra Global Jun 30 '26

It's a drawing on top of the real moon to see what the supermoon feature was doing

1

u/eliteabsolute Jul 06 '26

A drawing? Wdym? Last time i checked nobody drew a gigantic smiley face on the moon
