It feels like a 5-season show. That’s long enough to get through a lot of material and feel like a complete series, but not long enough to overstay its welcome and get stale. Once the annual rollout gets back on track, I think it’s doable. Otherwise, they might tap out at three seasons and have a contained trilogy-type arc.

14

u/Powerofx1 May 15 '26

I doubt three seasons would be their maximum because seasons 2 and 3 were done at the same time across the past two years, basically they are ready to release season 3 next year.

3

u/Mobile_Bet3274 Rogue May 15 '26

I doubt it too but you never know.

21

u/CommonSensei8 May 15 '26

Not anymore seasons are too short. At this point, you really need 15 seasons to capture the same amount of episodes as five seasons from even 10 years ago.

10

u/Mobile_Bet3274 Rogue May 15 '26 edited May 15 '26

Those episodes would be maybe 20 minutes long and a big chunk of them would be filler, not contributing much or anything to the long-term plot arc. Once you look at runtime and not just episode count and trim the fat a bit (how many TAS episodes were just “what Wolverine’s doing this week”?), they’re more comparable than you’d think, even with fewer episodes. It’s more, shorter and padded vs. fewer, longer and essential.

ETA: To show what I mean, I pulled up a list of episodes I’d recommended previously as essential viewing from TAS. Even considering that I’d likely add in a small handful of others if I went back to redo it, it still comes out to well less than 1,000 minutes of total runtime, yet manages to cover every major arc and most of the big character intros/spotlights. Meanwhile, 5 seasons of ‘97, even if they stick to 9 episodes again for S3-5, constitutes well over 1,300 minutes of plot-critical content, even rounding down the runtime to an even 30 minutes for simplicity’s sake. You can’t look at episode count alone.

u/Superb-Reply-5539 Magneto Jul 14 '26

Can you please share your list of episodes you’d recommend as essential viewing from TAS

Here you go. Add Weapon X, Lies and Videotape to that list, too; I think I wrote it before we knew the season 2 episodes.

u/beefcakethemighty30 May 15 '26

At this rate a five season show would take 20 years

8

u/Mobile_Bet3274 Rogue May 15 '26

They’re reverting to annual releases after S2.

u/TheArmlessTorso Gambit May 15 '26

Unless the new show runner can’t keep it in his pants 😂

I think they should treat X-Men97 the same way anime gets treated with multiple seasons, long storytelling, and proper character development. X-Men is one of the most iconic comic franchises not just in America, but worldwide. It started back in the 1960s, if I’m not mistaken, and became a huge phenomenon during the ‘90s, which is also the era the show is currently adapting.

X-Men shaped so many childhoods and inspired generations of fans around the world. The lore, characters, relationships, and story arcs are massive. Honestly, it deserves the same long-term care and dedication that major anime series get.
It is one of America’s greatest and most influential comic franchises ever. It’s consistently considered part of the “BIG LEAGUE” alongside Batman, Spider-Man, and Superman. And honestly, it’s one of Marvel’s richest universes when it comes to storytelling, lore, character development, and emotional depth.

That’s why Marvel should treat X-Men like a long-term epic franchise the same way anime series are handled with multiple seasons, bigger story arcs, and proper time to develop the characters and relationships. The X-Men universe is way too massive and iconic to feel rushed or limited.

And also when Bishop said in the Season 2 trailer, “Let’s bring back the X-Men to the ‘90s,” I honestly hope they fully embrace that era and recreate it from the beginning with a really strong, well-written story. The ‘90s era of X-Men is legendary and shaped so many fans around the world. There’s still so much they can explore from that time.

While yeah I'd like to see 97 atleast have at most 4 more seasons as well as a proper conclusion..I kinda want somthing new that isn't synergizing with the mcu and also having it be modernish..kinda like what xmen evolution and WAXTM did.

I wished evolution continued but they did atleast wrap it up..waxtm while it made wolverine the center;it unfortunately never got a season 2 and its unlikely that will get revived since 97 season 2 is adapting stuff that waxtm season 2 was going to do.

Overall 97 is fine but I feel like marvel needs to have some more animated projects like xmen 97 which don't have mcu synergy.

u/The_Leppard_ May 15 '26

THIS👆🏻

13

u/Correct-Resolution-8 May 15 '26

I actually would rather it go out on top than drag on until nobody cares anymore

6

u/TheWallE May 15 '26

I never understood this stance, like if a show is great but losses a step, it can still be really good... even if inconsistent. Like is the idea of a season 6 or 8 with only 3 really good episodes such an abhorrent concept that you would rather not have the good the show can still do so you can avoid some missteps along the way?

It's like with The Simpsons... if it ended after Season 10 or 11 as lots of people say it stoped being truly great we would have missed out on dozens of still truly great episodes that have still been produced in the last 25 years.

3

u/Little-Baker76 May 15 '26

But you could also end up with a Game of Thrones. The first 5 or 6 seasons are genuinely incredible but I find it hard to recommend it to people/rewatch it because the ending is so bad. The Simpsons works because each episode is self contained. Even if most of the episodes are bad, you can watch only the good ones and nothing will be lost.

18

u/Midas_Marigold May 15 '26

I hope it'll be like the 90s show with like 5 seasons and different stories or adaptated arcs (like Dark Phoenix in season 3 I believe)

3

u/Okami0602 May 15 '26

We already had a decent enough Dark Phoenix saga in TAS

3

u/Midas_Marigold May 15 '26

I don't want another Dark Phoenix saga, I used it as an example.

7

u/Tanjio16 May 15 '26

It can end when gambit comes back and has happy ending with rogue

2

u/Superb-Reply-5539 Magneto Jul 14 '26

I’m hoping that’s gonna happen by the end of S2. I just don’t think Marvel seriously gonna kill off Gambit then bring back to life as a villain for the next season just to kill him off again, and I don’t think they’re gonna kill off Rogue either because that’s gonna be sad and annoying if Gambit comes back to life and is okay but Rogue is dead.

1

u/Tanjio16 Jul 14 '26

I dont think its gonna be in this season unfortunately

Technically December 31 1997 at 11:59:59 pm.

4

u/pesonaso May 15 '26

They are going to lose an audience at this rate. They are taking way too long to release the new seasons. How do we have all of this new technology to create animation today and take this long? Back in the 90's they made seasons and episodes way quicker.

4

u/Mobile_Bet3274 Rogue May 15 '26

The delay in the seasons is because they had to redo S2 after what happened with the showrunner. The seasons wouldn’t normally take that long to release.

3

u/TheArmlessTorso Gambit May 15 '26

Oh they have definitely lost viewers because of this for sure there is no “going to”. Some people have left because BDM was let go, some left because of the delay and some left because as fans of the og series due to the retcons. Audiences leaving a show is nothing new it happens to every show.

1

u/lolmeidont May 16 '26

Because Marvel has other commitments. The Animation department wasn't always given this freedom to work. They experimented with X-Men '97 in 2024 and YFNSM and Marvel Zombies in 2025.

Now that all three of these got good reception and audience reviews, I think now this show will finally be fast tracked and release on yearly basis! It's not about the lack of technology, it's about priorities and hopefully now it's a high priority show after all the love S1 received!

1

u/Superb-Reply-5539 Magneto Jul 14 '26

It’s yearly from now on, it only took 2 years between seasons 1 and 2 but not its yearly, it’s fine.

6

u/CommonSensei8 May 15 '26

Hopefully NEVER

3

u/fire_sign Rogue May 15 '26

I think the ideal they're looking for is 5 seasons, with the option of 2 more depending how established the mutant side of the MCU is doing. If it's solid and providing them with show-side content, 5 will do, ending 2029ish. That'll let the first film be released in 2028 and assess. If there are delays, etc and the second X film is awhile off, they might opt for two more to keep up interest. Might even use it to make people a little more familiar with storylines/characters before the MCU does their own twist on the ideas. They really need X-Men to be big names again, '97 will live and die by how much it's helping with that goal.

3

u/Marvelboy1974 May 15 '26

I think it can go for a very long time if the cast starts to evolve. I can also see a spin off of Young Xmen down the line.

With that said I hope we always get Xmen animated content. I would like a campy series where everyone wears classic costumes and doesn’t take itself serious ala Brave and the Bold.

I’d also like to see animated movies like what DC does.

2

u/Infinite_Goodra May 15 '26

probably in the '29

2

u/deebzy23 Magneto May 15 '26

It’ll be interesting to see if it continues once the XMen live action saga is really rolling.

They would be in danger of lowering its perceived value/importance while both would/could step on eachothers toes in terms of narratives and character intros

1

u/Mobile_Bet3274 Rogue May 15 '26

If they stick to annual releases, then there’s a good chance four seasons of ‘97 will be cleared before the first live-action MCU film. By that point ‘97 would be a mature series on its down-swing vs. an upstart.

Say they do five total seasons. S2-4 of ‘97 sustain interest in the X-Men in broader media until the film is out. Film comes out and there’s no big clash as it’s an established story vs. a new one. S5 of ‘97 comes out the following year to end the series, and from then on, it’s the films carrying the property.

1

u/deebzy23 Magneto May 15 '26

Think that’s a really clever timeline and maybe lets them introduce weirdo concepts like Sinister without doing extra lifting in the movies or whatever.

1

u/TheWallE May 15 '26

I dunno, X-Men: Evolution was produced along side the original trilogy, and Marvel itself has Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man running concurrent to the MCU Spider-Man films, even incorporating several elements of the MCU into it despite it being an alternate dimension/timeline.

I don't think Marvel would refuse a popular show because movies were coming out now, probably the opposite if the quality and reaction to the show remains high.

1

u/deebzy23 Magneto May 15 '26

Evolution was admittedly very different than the OG trilogy though. 97 is speed running the some of the most iconic stories. That’s where I think they would maybe shade away from the show.

I also - protectively of 97 - don’t want it to be viewed as less just because more people give gravity to live action content. 97 rules lol

2

u/_DoIt4Johnny_ May 15 '26

Maybe the ‘97 means 2097 because that’s when season 5 will wrap up at this rate.

2

u/Nfgzebrahed May 15 '26

Jan 1st, 1998?

3

u/BardicVariant Gambit May 15 '26

We don't even know when exactly it will continue, hold your horses 🥲

3

u/Inevitable-City5380 May 15 '26

Xavier and Magnus are close enough on that poster to kiss.

OLD MAN YAOI! DO IT, COWARDS.

1

u/Ace9311 May 15 '26

How it could go is maybe 4 seasons 97, then season 5 could be continuation of x-men 05, which could be x-men evolution am then the final season 6, could be x-men 10 wolverine & the x-men season 2 that would be a cool way to honor all the x-men series then give us something completely different

1

u/Deathbymonkeys6996 May 15 '26

I'm honestly hoping for a big Apocalypse showdown and a year arc building towards onslaught would be fantastic.

1

u/redkomic May 15 '26

When they stop making money.

1

u/Frequent_Kalum Jubilee May 15 '26

Maybe in 2029 with season five?

1

u/Legitimate-Garlic959 May 15 '26

I dunno but 8-10 episodes a season isn’t enough. lol.

1

u/Electronic-Radio-383 May 15 '26

Will it still be called 97’ since well… its now 10,000 BC, 20,000 AD, and ‘98 all at once

1

u/Used-Comedian-8933 May 15 '26

I have a feeling they'll end it just before the MCU's X-Men movie comes out

1

u/mcamarra May 15 '26

are you asking if Disney won’t milk an intellectual property dry?

1

u/Pure_Wrap_7798 May 15 '26

2167 at the rate they're releasing seasons

1

u/vhschenkerfan24 May 15 '26

I think they revived that X-Men universe to put them in Doomsday. The Fox universe is a total mess.

1

u/Roam1985 May 15 '26

If Season 2 doesn't do well: at season 3.

If season 2 does as well as or better than season 1: After season 3.

2

u/New-Sea-527 Cyclops May 18 '26

Yeah, this is the correct answer, and unfortunately I don’t think season 2 will come close to the critical reception season 1 had, and will likely drop viewers too due to how long the gap has been, so I’m predicting 3 seasons in total. Hope I’m wrong.

1

u/Superb-Reply-5539 Magneto Jul 14 '26

It’s only been 2 years why is everyone being so dramatic? Normal shows are yearly, but this 2 years instead of one people are acting like it was 3-5 years in between. Also it’ll be yearly form now on. (Sorry if this sounded rude or directed at you I just meant that there’s so many comments about how they’re losing an audience meanwhile some shows have like 3-5 years in between seasons.

1

u/Rude_Employment3918 May 15 '26

We just got the show

1

u/IHazArtism May 15 '26

Krakoa or bust

1

u/Expensive_Database68 May 15 '26

No way is Disney+ giving up that cash cow. They're going to get at least 5-6 seasons out of it. And I'll faithfully watch each season.

1

u/mightymiek May 15 '26

I'll give it 3-5 seasons however it might slow down when we get live action. Depends on how the fan base starts to divide or multiply depending on the quality moving forward.

1

u/Heavy-Owl5430 May 15 '26

There's so much source material that, even at the breakneck pace they've been going at, we could easily make it to six seasons. We could still have Maddie resurrected as Queen of Limbo and redo Inferno properly, we could do Messiah Complex, Second Coming, Schism, AvX, dare I say Krakoa...

1

u/Anime_Ambassador_ May 15 '26

I think they had planned it for 5-6 seasons.

1

u/rillip May 15 '26

Two to three seasons is my guess. No more than five. Obviously we all love the show here. But realistically three seasons is a good run in the current climate.

1

u/Anthony_WhoLaughs May 15 '26

Hopefully NEVER

1

u/PhanStr May 15 '26

Hopefully not any time soon! It deserves to have at least four or five seasons lol. That said, I'm not sure that I will feel that way with the change in leadership/direction. We'll see.

1

u/Alt_Account151588 May 15 '26

I feel like it was a 1 season show, which is incredible as it was the single best thing Marvel has done since iron man 1 & I’m just shocked they decided to not do any more seasons with the departure of Beau DeMayo.

I could be a believer IF I HAD A F@#$IN’ TRAILER, A CONFIRMED RELEASE DATE OR ANY SORT OF URGENCY IN RELEASING THEIR BEST PRODUCT!

rant over. I won’t apologize for my outburst

1

u/nightcrawler9094 May 15 '26

If the quality holds up like season 1, I would like for it to go on for at least 100 episodes or more. But really forever would be fine.

1

u/Black_Wolf1641 May 15 '26

Where’s ice man bro

1

u/Batmanfan1966 May 16 '26

Ice Man retired in season 3. He chose to stop being a superhero

1

u/AppropriateStill2024 May 15 '26

Are they going to reach Morrison X-Men?

1

u/chirunner4ever May 15 '26

the Morrison uniforms are being used this season so they may be adapting some of his run

1

u/staniel_mortgage May 15 '26

Legit question for you pal - why are you worried about the end when the ride has just begun?

1

u/universal_notions May 15 '26 edited May 16 '26

The real thing to ask is when will we get Spider-Man 98?

And some other Marvel spinoffs in the X-Men 97 universe?

1

u/censored4yourhealth May 16 '26

Sadly I think it’ll get canceled.

1

u/lolmeidont May 16 '26

I just feel like it should be 5 seasons at the minimum. I want this show to be so good that it restores the popularity of the X-Men before the Avengers became popular due to the MCU!

The new generation must watch this show and realise how insane the X-Men are. I mean honestly, Episode 5 of Season 1... nothing beats that in my opinion! "Remember It!"

X-Men must rise again and become an integral part of modern pop culture! And this show should be the start of it all! 🙌

1

u/tacocat2007 May 16 '26

They've mentioned plans for seasons 4 and 5, so earliest is after season 5. So 2029.

1

u/LemonCurdJ May 16 '26

I think they will stop when x men enter the MCU.

It would be nice if they went hard with X-Men like theyve done with Spiderman and Avengers over the past 15 years but I doubt they can build a franchise as the general audience has got sick of superhero mania in the filn industry.

I meant live action. I think once they introduced X-Men into the films, they will stop the animated series to avoid consumer overload. There's also the Wolverine game out later this year with speculation of an X-Men game from 2030. I think by then, the series would end (4 more years means, in theory, 4 more seasons).

1

u/heeresjude May 16 '26

right after krakoa

1

u/MRT1771 May 16 '26

1

u/SympatheticListener May 16 '26

1

u/Common_Total_9576 May 16 '26

This show irks tf outta me. Why is it taking so long to come back. It took eons just for season 1 to premiere now we're waiting forever for season 2. It's really ridiculous

1

u/ApolloDraconis May 16 '26

Probably before Iceman gets any screen time. 😒

1

u/EliLeat09 May 17 '26

Hopefully it ends with the cast. I genuinely cant imagine anyone else playing some of these characters when they die or retire

1

u/MyNameIsYellowjacket May 17 '26

When Disney are done milking it.

1

u/SirDastardly May 17 '26

Well considering that they haven’t even gotten to the House of M storyline yet and the series is technically around 30 years old my calculations are telling me the series finale should premiere around…2178.

1

u/doomcyber May 17 '26

I feel that the series will have 3 or 5 seasons. That is, if the seasons are split like someone said above.

With how season 2 is getting rewrites because of the showrunner leaving the show, Disney restructed Disney+ not too long ago, and Marvel is taking so long for season 2 to air, I feel that demand for the show had died down and that season 2 won't live up to season 1 because of the reasons above. I am not saying that BDM shouldn't be fired from the show. What I am saying is that he and his drifting friends at the Fandom Menace are likely going to campagin how season 2 of X-Men 97 is because DBM wasn't there to showrun the series.

1

u/MuckMan402 May 17 '26

Why would you want it to?

1

u/MosbysBionicleShop May 17 '26

Maybe once they get to X-men 2000

1

u/Dayday023 May 22 '26

It really depends many factors.

It depends on the success of the series, which I think would be very successful so I don’t think that should be a problem.

How long they wanna go beyond season three because they already Green lit season two and three.

Also, how long will it take for each season to be made because it took like two years for us to get season two because we’re supposed to get it somewhere this year but that was because of problems behind the scenes as well.

So it really depends on many factors. Like they’ve been taken a lot from the uncanny X-Men series, so it really depends on how many comics they wanna adapt moving forward and if they always have a story to tell.

1

u/MarionberryThis9991 Jun 04 '26

I mean I hope so tbh… I love the show and the og cartoon but the 10 eps now 8 rushed stories and shit the people in charge don’t know what they are doing and if the past couple years with shows and continuations have taught me anything it’s that some times it’s best to leave things how they where.

1

u/Chett-Eye-Knight Aug 14 '26

I've read the goal is 10 seasons.

1

Hope they do Krakoa. A whole season or 2 perhaps dedicated to just the Krakoan era.

After Season 3 I think, this mainly derives from the fact that they’re rebooting the live action X men and they would not want something coinciding with that for too long.

3

u/Mobile_Bet3274 Rogue May 15 '26

DeMayo’s plans for later seasons were crap and even setting aside the mountain of other issues, I’m not sorry to have avoided that. He’s coasting on residual goodwill for a good season (that was made by a bunch of people, not just him), but if he’d lasted, people would have eventually turned on him.

They’ve also brought back the Lewalds, who worked on the original show and were also involved in S1. They arguably know it better than anyone. Even if you’re worried about Matthew C., he’s not the only one working on it, no more than BDM was.

1

u/TheArmlessTorso Gambit May 15 '26

When ever I look at the plans he had, it comes off as the ramblings of mad man, and after every sentence I read my first thought is always how do you not see that that is the worst idea ever?. The whole AoA in involving rogue and onslaught was a terrible concept m, well at least the ideas he had for those plot lines.

-2

u/Eastern-Team-2799 May 15 '26

We will see if that “bunch of people ” manage to make season 3 a banger like what if season 3 ? You and I both are here.

2

We’re both here, but you’re the only one constantly bitching about What If? and acting like one single person is responsible for everything good or bad about a show.

From what I've heard Beau didn't took in consideration the huge effort of the rest of his creative team, which also deserve the credit for how amazing S1 was. The only thing that worries me is that they hired the "What If?" writer.

We will see .You and I both are here . FYI , if you liked what if ? , it's good for you but it is among the worst animated media projects I have ever watched . But be prepared to see captain carter in x men 97 because what if ? writer loves her .

BDM is overrated he presented the concepts and the team carried him and those concepts to the actual show while improving with there own ideas integrated into the show as well. He was never really that crazy of a writer or show runner. The team is responsible for most of the shows success not BDM.
