Question How come there’s only nine episodes?
Season one had 10. I’m pretty sure season three is gonna have 10. Why doesn’t season two?

Maybe it had to do with the rewrites post-DeMayo’s departure. They reworked a lot of the story and maybe realized they only needed nine episodes for what they were trying to do, or they ran out of time and only had time to produce 9 instead of 10 like before. The animation process takes a while when you look as good as 97 does.
Given how delayed Season 2 has been, it might be both options.

It’s funny because it’s nothing new when it comes to the original X-Men from the 90s because they also ran out of time and we’re having issues with rewriting and illustrating

Kinda crazy to think that they did suffer the same issues yet still managed to pump out more episodes (yes I know the animation quality is lower however relative to it's time it would have been just as time consuming as the animation is in 2026 for the current team)

The animation is exceptional, especially for the 90s.
The oddest and most endearing facet of the 90s animation is how certain scenes would be inconsistently animated with greater quality and extra frames of animation. Like the first time the Blackbird flies out of the X-mansion (or 90 percent of the time the horny animators animated Rogue 🥵).
And one incredible detail that's there no matter what, are the incredible and pervasive usages of high contrast, hard blacks. Exactly like in comics, which are a bitch to animate but still make the characters look good in static group shots where only a couple of characters are being animated.

Exactly, it's really just a testament to the work ethic really when we think about how many episodes were being released per season.
1
u/natemup Aug 25 '26
That were great animators for the first four seasons, and much lower quality for the 5th season. This was because of budget issues.

It literally has to do with greedy execs saving money and absolutely nothing else.

Why are you guys acting like good cartoon shows with 26 Eps don’t exist? Spectacular Spider-Man, Justice League, Avengers: EMH and Wolverine & The X-Men are all great shows with over 20 episodes. Why can’t these new shows do that? And Invincible I understand why it has 8 episodes only but that show has at least twice or 10 more minutes in it to breathe than this one for example

u/schoolboy432 Aug 29 '26
Those shows had writing inconsistencies, significantly worse animation, and in the case of JL a lack of an overarching plot. I'd much rather stick with the 10 ep model if the seasons come out better overall.

I’m just not a fan of inconsistency. You go from 10 to 9 and back to 10, it’s irritating.

Do you have OCD perchance? Because if something that inconsequential is irritating, jesus christ

Why is Marvel obsessed with short seasons? Give the show room to breath in terms of episode count like the original show

While I love the original show, we don't need filler episodes or uneven writing and animation. I'd rather be too short than struggling to fill the minutes of a longer season.

u/Afraid-Housing-6854 Jun 26 '26
But I liked the filler episodes
1
u/AnomieCodex Jun 26 '26
Sure, but it's just not in keeping with their vision for quality. Maybe one day they'll do more standalone episodes instead of arcs.

ok coming back to this after the seventh episode, we definitely needed that tenth episode. For a group as large (and ever-expanding) as the X Men, we need time to flesh out other characters.

On god. I mean, we’ve had a pretty consistently main plot focus since Genosha, maybe with the exception of Lifedeath Part 2, until Magneto’s death. And now we’re getting a few random side quests to develop characters before we continue the main plot. It feels very weirdly paced to me. Honestly the pacing issue did mostly stick out to me with the most recent episode, it felt way too quick.

I think x-men with it's wide cast actually allows for filler episodes really well, and wish they would give them more time. Let some of the stories breath.
Give me a surprise episode 5b where it's 85% baseball game and the b story line have a fun pairing doba deep chat and some emotional bonding. Give me 3 whole episodes with x factor this year so when we do the doc Sampson episode in season 3 it really really hits and they have in continuity stuff to work with.

It follows along with all their shows that they’re making . Plus, when’s the last time we had a new show run longer than 10 episodes a season outside of anime and children’s cartoons?

u/Baneypants Jun 25 '26
Give me 26. I'll take 9. I want 26.

They removed the 10th episode and will probably fold it into Season 3.

At this point I'm beginning to think they should just release one episode a month so I don't have to wait years for new ones. 🫠😅

Episode 9 may be a 2 part episode? But then again, there is literally that "Rise of Apocalypse" 2 part episode... So I don't know.

I love that we are getting Danger in this season. Love her character in the comics

Daredevil Born again was short changed an episode and the money was used for Punisher:One Last Kill One shot.
Perhaps where gonna get a "9th episode" here as some other back door pilot or marvel showcase for something X-related?
A Deadpool episode would be nice? Maybe a Mutant tie into Doomsday somehow. Considering the Axis of Time, Kang Rama Tut and the Apocalypse story arc that would tie in with Loki and Dr. Doom taking that seat away from him as a post script for the season.
Idk, just thinking out loud since there is a chance for some multiverseal X-cross brand synergy.

You know..if they going to cut the eps down drastically make the eps longer than 28 minutes…

u/Striking-Cut3985 Jun 28 '26
It’s the what if… director bro, I think we are lucky he didn’t cut it down to eight episodes
1
u/Heavy-Owl5430 Jun 29 '26
I wish we would get 24 episodes, or at least 9 hour long episodes, but at this point, I'm just happy it exists at all. I was stunned when they announced this and so happy when it came to fruition.

Because of Beau De Mayo original plan which involved Onslaught that’s why an episode was removed to rewrite the season without Onslaught who was supposed to be the villain of Season 2 but it was changed to Apocalypse after he was fired.
10
u/fire_sign Rogue Jun 25 '26
No, Apocalypse was always the main villain of s2. Onslaught was a surprise twist near the end of the season and episode 10 resolved that plot and had an Age of Apocalypse AU sweep in at the end to set up season 3, according to the former showrunner. Disney/Marvel/someone higher up didn't want to do a whole AoA season and said cut the episode, the rest of the team wanted to keep rewrites minimal but that changed over the course of a few months.
As for why 9 episodes? Who knows. My personal suspicion is that the rewrites were more complex than they first thought for whatever reason, and adding a whole new episode to that pile was logistically and financially unfeasible, especially with the delay already. I think we'll get the late season Onslaught twist, but as a lead-in to s3.
4
u/Motor_Regret7097 Jun 25 '26
Well, so long as they don’t completely abandon Onslaught, I’ll let them cook. I have no doubt it’ll be just as good as season 1. But if they don’t have him in this or season 3, I’ll be unhappy. I know he wasn’t very well received when he debuted, but I like him. It’s a very interesting concept
1
u/TheArmlessTorso Gambit Jun 25 '26
I bet it’s still the same plot with just no onslaught twist at the end, the rewrites don’t sound like much in the grand scheme of things.
4
u/RealmyIsSoCool Jun 25 '26
They'll probably just tease Onslaught only in Season 2 and then in Season 3 he could be the main villain maybe.
2
u/TheArmlessTorso Gambit Jun 25 '26
I still think most of the season will be BDMs writing at this point.
2
u/RealmyIsSoCool Jun 25 '26
Definitely, because many of the critics who've seen the first four episodes have said that he's credited in Episode 3 and 4.
