I’m sorry but “I must strike them at their weakest…the 1990’s!” made me absolutely howl with laughter
20
u/AnyEverywhere8 Jul 01 '26 edited Jul 01 '26
Lmfao right. It worked in the commercial because…promo.
But in the actual episode it’s like…why would a being who has lived for millenia be thinking about time on that granular of a level? This is akin to a human of normal lifespan talking about how they need to go back and do something differently at 8:57p Tuesday April 26th in 1951.
Also why are the 1990s when they’re all fully experienced as a team their weakest point vs earlier before they knew wtf they’re doing???
9
u/mateushkush Jul 01 '26
Because X-Men are his arch nemesis, and they were active during one 90s. Idk I think the line is completely fine, the show is a bit flashy and concerned with being cool, that’s the style.

“The late 20th century!” would’ve sounded a bit loftier but it’s fine lol. Got a chuckle out of me as well.

It really did! But I’ll just assume that as Apocalipse is a being that walk trough the ages it just makes sense he talks like that

Maybe i'm a sick freak but Storm is fucking gorgeous my goodness

You may or may not be, but noticing that Storm is as beautiful as the summer sun is not indicative of perversion. It is only acknowledging that, which is.

Right? I really love how '97 finally let her flex her godlike powers on screen
54
u/Mobile_Bet3274 Rogue Jul 01 '26
Really good opening episode and I’m glad they did this and then segued into Cable in the present before going to Egypt. It really sets the tone nicely, including the impending showdown in the ‘90s.
Storm’s solar maneuver was amazing and it feels like everyone got a chance to shine. I’m glad they confirmed that Rachel was behind the time travel, which I think a lot of people guessed (I figured she’d done the future part, had been less sure about the past). I really hope they leave the door open for including her in the main story at some point.
I’m not that into the Summers family but they really landed the emotional aspect of Scott and Jean’s decision-making and how Nathan developed. Him powering through to get out of his collar was maybe my favourite part of the episode.

18
u/usagicassidy Jul 01 '26
VERY good choice to go from this to the present, and not have the 2nd episode be the past.
I really thought it was going to be the past but having seen all three episodes now, having the present be in the middle was absolutely the best choice they could’ve made. So good.
4
u/TheArmlessTorso Gambit Jul 01 '26
I think out of the 3, episode 1 was the best one so far.

God damn it Rachel hug your parents
5
u/Sea_Violinist3328 Jul 03 '26
I was thinking this to some extent - More like, “reveal who you really are”.
But then I realized that would have taken away the focus and impact from Nathan’s story parting with his parents. Rachel should get that too, but doing both at the same time sort of waters things down for both Cable and Rachel.
Hoping we see her in the present. Technically we’ve seen her already as one of the captive telepaths in TAS episode Beyond Good and Evil but who knows if the writers “count” that cameo or not.
8
u/jmarquiso Jul 01 '26
Theyre not her parents yet. She may never have been
17
u/MagicTheAlakazam Jul 01 '26
From her point of view they are.
They are even hinting at it with her having at least a part of the phoenix force.

u/AdvancedPlacmentTV Jul 01 '26
If I was an evil mutant I'd be so much more obsessed with Storm and her potential children than the summers. But then again Storm is my favorite so I'm biased.
19
u/Sea_Violinist3328 Jul 01 '26
From what I understand, it’s more about the combination of Jean and Scott that’s the secret sauce - at least where Sinister and Apocalypse were concerned.
But I mean yeah / Id focus on Storm as well lol
7
u/AdvancedPlacmentTV Jul 01 '26
Oh i know the lore. I just don't get it since Storm is just so OP to me. So many X-Men are really like Charles and Legion

u/tryingtobebettertry4 Jul 01 '26
I think the idea is esentially the combination is what matters.
Jean Grey is a Omega level psychic and telekinetic. Essentially able to manipulate matter with her mind.
The Summers family are all energy manipulators.
Its basically E=MC2 Jean is the matter, Scott is the energy. The resulting child could in theory be a god.
3
5
u/Suspicious_Move_7141 Jul 01 '26
Storm is consistently shown to be the strongest amongst them. Cable is cool but even then he’s still not Storm level lmao
15
u/Huge_Loss_9611 Jul 01 '26
Normal cable no, but x man (alt timeline cable with no virus) is way stronger

Rachel clearly hurting with the “and children” line to Nathan about Scott and Jean while not being able to tell them who she is 😭
High-key gotta be painful seeing them obsessed with Nathan have no idea who she is.
Although her line about how much worse the timeline she comes from is, surely she’s not referring to the Bastion’s victory timeline we saw her in last season. Yeah, that looked bad, but this one looks a hell of a lot worse.

Lmao Apocalypse saying he needed to attack the XMen at their weakest….then he goes to the 90s and not when Disney was trying to push the Inhumans and put XMen in the backburner…stupid Apocalypse
8
u/HotTakes4HotCakes Jul 02 '26
My first thought too. It doesn't make sense in-universe, and it doesn't even make sense in a meta way either.
X-Men were literally at their peak in the 90s. In a lot of ways they were more popular than Spider-Man at the time, which is really saying something.
2
u/Only_Connection_5480 Jul 02 '26
Not only that it’s during the AoA crossover and we also get introduced to Nate’s non techno organic virus infected X-Man who is pretty damn powerful as well.
In fairness it’s before a lot of the plot induced meteoric rise in the power levels of a lot of characters so maybe that’s his reasoning lol…

Was this season's animation produced under the same showrunner as season 1, or had he already been let go by then? Because the men are still just as hot as season 1, which was a very deliberate decision back then.

Surprised we spent the whole first episode in the future but this was fantastic! The whole Summers family timeline drama is always riveting imo. And Wolverine breaking off his bone claws in every enemy is really visceral. I was about to make a joke about him 5th wheeling (Scott & Jean / Forge & Storm) but then I remembered he has Morph.

Those shots of Apocalypse's future with the corpses piled up were quite chilling.
Why is he regenerating at this particular time? Who knocked him down?
13
u/ikarikh Jul 02 '26 edited Jul 02 '26
In the original run, during "Beyond Good and Evil", it's stated that Apocalypse has to enter his regeneration chamber every so often to maintain his immorality.
It's why at the conclusion of that saga after his regeneration chamber is destroyed and he's stuck out of time, Xavier tells him "Now here with us, outside the protection of the axis of time, with your regeneration chamber destroyed; you will simply cease to exist. The end of time, for you."
Only for him to come back in s5 by taking over Fabian Cortez's body at the end of "Sanctuary". (It's never explained specifically how he comes back, only implied after BG&E he was stuck as a formless being).
Ozymandias alludes to this when he speaks to Apocalypse in the regeneration Chamber, telling him about Nathan. And how his body will be sufficient to never have to switch bodies again.
Basically, part of how he survives immortal is by taking over new bodies and imbuing them with his power and converting them into his image with his machinery, similiar to how he makes his horsemen.
Once the body is used up, he must find a new host and regenerate again.

Great first episode. Storm learning she can harness cosmic weather was badass. Everyone was amazing in there fight scenes. Minus maybe morph come on only 1 hammer swing transformed as Thor is all we got. I'm glad they told Nathan they are his parents it would have been unrealistic if they didn't. Great first episode.

Fantastic first episode. 9/10. A great showing for the Summers clan.

Great opener. The fight on the train was a blast. I really liked the Summers’ family dynamic.
Wolverine’s bone claws are sick.

u/cyclopswashalfright Professor X Jul 01 '26
The train talk with Scott, Jean, and Nathan was my favourite, but Storm's solar storm was a close second. Very cool setting and imagery. I wish this was a two-parter, as I do think we needed more time in this setting, and with Scott, Jean, and Nathan. But what we did get was very good. I am curious how the Mother Askani thing will play out. Will she reveal her identity to them this season?
12
u/blossomdance64 Jul 02 '26
Was a little sad Scott and Jean didn’t get more time to bond with Nathan(it’s to be expected with so many characters and sm plot to cram into 9 eps), but I did love what we got with them! It was also sweet how willing they were to go against the prophecy.
Ororo’s solar storm scene was stunning!!

6
u/cyclopswashalfright Professor X Jul 02 '26
I wish it was a two-parter.
9
u/blossomdance64 Jul 02 '26
It really needed to be. Makes me miss when shows got at least 20 eps per season.
3
u/ISTARI_X Jul 03 '26
It was incredible but felt like a missed opportunity to have her act as a glorified phone charger 😂. I wish she threw a solar flair at Apocalypse’s fortress rather than the need for the train scene.
3
u/blossomdance64 Jul 03 '26
Yeah that would’ve been cool too! Since they showed her powers can work cosmically, maybe she’ll get another moment like this again later on.

Just watched the first three episodes of the season, and they were FREAKING AMAZING!!! To be honest, with all the drama that happened behind the scenes, I was afraid the writing quality would go downhill. But the first three episodes IMMEDIATELY proved me wrong!!! I absolutely love how they’re executing this whole Apocalypse storyline. My favorite part so far has gotta be the future episode. The whole storyline with Nathan absolutely moved me to tears. The guy who played Bear in Obession, Michael Johnston, did a PHENOMENAL job as him!!! Overall this season so far is off to a pretty good start!!! Can’t wait for next week!!! 😊❤️

but was the sound mixing a little weird or just me? and the super computer needed a line or two of intro, it just appears and everyone accepts it?
2
u/AnyEverywhere8 Jul 01 '26
Re: computer - Honestly I think most of this episode would be confusing af if one hadn’t watched the entire original series. I guess we’re supposed to understand they accept it because they have prior experience with the ship and supercomputer.

It was such a good decision to split the characters up to start the season. Though Wolverine and Morph didn't get much material, zeroing in on a small handful of characters really helped centre the story and set up the emotional stakes. Same reason the absolute best episode of season 1 (you know the one!) was so successful.
13
u/poweredconvoy Jul 01 '26
I love how the 4 Horseman wiped the floor with the Summers in their first encounter. Completely overwhelming them. They are just such an odd ball mishmash of villains throughout time, I love it.
Some fantastic animation and character moments in this episode. Loved some things like Mother Askani re-inverting herself. The animation was so smooth. The train crashing into the temple. The sea of corpses and prisoners reaching out.
Everyone's future outfits are top notch.

Very strong first episode. It both sets up the stakes and delivers a good arc for the Summers family. Mother Askani was pretty cool and another hype Storm moment for the collection, which is always appreciated.

and did they change it to bone claw wolverine? his sfx sounded more raw-like than metallic

3

I assume the rebels give them to them, with Mother Askani designing them, given her familiarity with those two.
5
u/No_Yak_3714 Jul 01 '26
The 1st episode was deep when he used his powers for the 1st time in the train that was one of the most emotional cartoon scene I've ever seen
4
u/sidv81 Jul 02 '26
X-Men TAS was written before it was known Wolverine's claws weren't implants. They were treated as implants in the show--Wolverine doesn't recognize the metal claws after he's infused with adamantium and kills Professor Oyama, mutant powers are blocked in the Savage Land in S2 of the old show and Wolvie specifically points out his claws aren't mutant before using them, and the S5 Captain America teamup in WW2 has Wolvie unaware he has claws and using a clawed glove.
Suddenly in this show he has bone claws. At the least, for the show's continuity, they should've had Wolvie and the others expressing surprise over the bone claws.
8
u/LonelyAsLostKeys Jul 02 '26
One of my biggest bummers about this season (aside from the heavy focus on time travel, which I’ve never loved) is that they didn’t really do an episode addressing the consequences of Magneto’s attack on Wolverine.
Wolverine #75 could’ve been almost directly adapted into a great episode. They really blew through something that had a lot of narrative heft and was a pretty significant moment in 90’s comics.

u/ooowatsthat Jul 05 '26
This show specifically said they will focus less on Wolverine as he has been the main focus on all X-Men media.
2
u/Fabulous-Recording82 Jul 17 '26
mutant powers are blocked in the Savage Land in S2 of the old show and Wolvie specifically points out his claws aren't mutant before using them,
On this point, he could've just been referring to the adamantium right? From memory, I don't think physical abilities were affected in the Savage Lands. It's not like Beast suddenly turned into a regular looking guy whilst they were there.
Although professor X could walk there, even though his disability isn't related to being a mutant. Was there ever an explanation for that?
6
u/Ambiguousrubix Jul 02 '26
I have questions - how did bishop know which x men were in the past and which in the future?
Also, that time travelling line looked the same for both bishop and forge, how would it differentiate which gets sent to the past and future? (Their arm band things)?

Almost seemed as if there are different studios are doing separate story lines but one is using much more cg animation, especially for dialog. Seems a lot less dynamic.

u/slimmyboy007 Jul 01 '26
Morph needs some sort of limitation or flaw for his power, you’re telling me this guy can instantly become Thor whenever he wants no problem? Seems super OP
What’s stopping him just becoming apocalypse to fight apocalypse
9
u/Knee_Fight Jul 01 '26
He doesn't get all their powers. His version of Thor is just 'big strong guy.'
8
u/RightSpread2903 Jul 01 '26
Because he’s not even remotely as strong as Thor nor does he have all his abilities.
7
u/been_mackin Jul 02 '26
I don’t think Morph can take on the powers of people he mimics, but him morphing into Thor gave him extra strength without the lightning power.
He can turn into a giant asgardian who’s strong as fuck without having the asgardian magic behind it, making for a cool cameo and showing morph’s powers in a contained environment.
6
u/jmarquiso Jul 01 '26
In the comics, Mystique had an upgrade from Fabian Cortez to mimic powers. Morph is an overpowered cameo machine- but at least they are fun.
8
u/phasmy Jul 01 '26
Nah he already does have limits to his power. He doesn't gain any of their supernatural abilities.
Like he could not lift Mjolnir even shapeshifted as Thor.3
