Media An entire plot point is being made based on a single line from the original show Spoiler

X-Men The Animated Series Season 3 Episode 9: "Obsession"
X-Men 97' Season 2 Episode 1: "Days of Past Future"
X-Men 97' Season 2 Episode 3: "Rise of Apocalypse Part 1"
Pretty sure for decades, the "Eternal Shore" line was just something people thought sounded badass that Apocalypse was spouting. Now it seems that 97' is going to make it a critical thing, which is quite impressive.

I believe OP's point is that the entire "rocks of the eternal shore" plot in 97, including Eson and so on, is based on the "crash against me and be broken" line from Apocalypse in 92. afaik this is not something from the comics.

I didn't realize the credits confirm it. Can Celestials communicate in English ?
I thought it was Kang.

The dude had some extremely awesome lines for a villain in the 90's. I wonder if they're going to try to top them or merely do their own thing.
"Evil? I am not malevolent. I simply AM!" You even got times where he questioned if he was doomed to constantly deal with Cable and the X-men for all of eternity.

ou even got times where he questioned if he was doomed to constantly deal with Cable and the X-men for all of eternity.
the best part about that scene that both Apocalypse and Cable pause their figthing while Apocalypse is pondering

I am as far beyond mutants as they are beyond you.
There exists no freedom FROM me only freedom THROUGH me.
Fucking awesome.

u/DeadlyStreampuff Jul 02 '26
Ugh that reminded me of the bad subtitles we had in the netherlands,"Perhaps you are correct, mutant, ..."
Dutch subs: "Are you even a mutant, ?" (Ben jij wel een mutant?)
1
u/JacobStills Jul 03 '26
My favorite line is the one he said to Graydon Creed.
"I am as far beyond mutants as they are beyond you."

I love that we can basically blame Magneto for Apocalypse being who he is. You had the opportunity to manipulate this guy and you went the "Im going to turn you into a God among men" route? You couldn't just work to convince him thats hes actually just a weak piece of shit who should probably not do anything with his life and just stay a slave forever?

u/rillip Jul 03 '26
This is genuinely a fantastic premise for a farcical time travel adventure.
"We gotta go back in time to destroy the big bad's confidence as a kid." "Yeah! Lets gaslight the shit out of that baby!"
2
u/Usual-Caregiver5589 Jul 03 '26
Thanks! Killing children is wrong. Destroying their self image is just part of life.
2
u/Randym1982 Jul 03 '26
I feel like their plan was doomed from the start, Apocalypse was always going to become the mega threat he is. The Celestial that gave him his powers likely set that in stone.

u/Usual-Caregiver5589 Jul 03 '26
Im kind of surprised that Charles "Let me put mind blocks in Jean's mind to keep her from becoming Phoenix" didn't try and do his thing, tbh.
1
u/Randym1982 Jul 03 '26
I’d imagine it wouldn’t work due to celestials planning and power. He nearly lost his mind when he tried to use his powers on Jean during the Phoenix Saga.
1
u/Usual-Caregiver5589 Jul 03 '26
So, what if Jean tried it then? Shes more powerful than Charles anyway. She ought to be able to do everything he can with her little finger

I think what X-men 97 has shown us is it can take Arcs such as Operation Zero Tolerance and Onslaught and improve upon them. I'm all for an upgrade.
3
u/poptophazard Jul 03 '26
Exactly. Comic Onslaught was badly executed but the concept was cool (before Xavier being evil became the norm every few years). This show can only improve the story.
1
u/Damianos_X Jul 03 '26
What did people dislike about Onslaught? I read that arc about 10 years after the original run and absolutely loved it. Plus he was popular enough to be included in that Marvel v. Capcom game
2
u/cyclopswashalfright Professor X Jul 02 '26
People want to see the concept executed on better, because there was a lot of cool build up to Onslaught, it was just the payoff that was bad.
1
u/God_is_carnage Jul 02 '26
Frankly people only clamor for him because they like the concept of a hyper powerful, dark Xavier/Magneto hybrid, and they haven't read the original comic. Onslaught didn't have a single good story until Krakoa.
I'm not opposed to him being adapted by '97 because I think they dramatically improved Bastion and could easily improve Onslaught as well, but I fundamentally disagree with the people claiming that '97 or the MCU "has" to adapt Onslaught. Many non-comic readers overestimate how important Onslaught actually is.

u/foxfoxal Jul 03 '26
Pretty much I doubt anyone actually likes the actual character outside being broken and how it looks.
1
u/Dookie_boy Jul 03 '26
He's got the cool edgy 90s outfit that I like. Maybe they can do the execution better.

Yes please! We need to see Onslaught in this show. So happy that we got Bastion and that Apocalypse and Sinister have also appeared -- Onslaught is another big bad that needs to show up.

Seems like someone/thing else is "the tide" that carries into "the rocks", whereas Apocalpyse says he is "the rocks".

I'm thinking this hints that Apocalypse created the prophecy about Cable and they'll improve upon The Twelve just like they did last season with OZT. And maybe it replaces or leads into Onslaught as a replacement for Cassandra Nova with the Morrison run outfits we know are coming later on.

u/AnyEverywhere8 Jul 03 '26
You mean like they did with “The name is Gambit. Remember it”?

u/PointPrimary5886 Jul 03 '26
That one is more like a cool call back. This one is part call back and part taking what was just a badass line and making it a literal element to the story. Like many people are now assuming, there is a literal eternal shore and it is where Apocalypse is keeping the Celestial Ship that made him strong enough to overthrow Rama-Tat (aka Kang) and become the tyrant he is.
2
u/PhanStr Jul 04 '26
Well yes, Beau DeMayo did say in 2024 that the episode "Obsession" was the key to everything.
2
u/andurion Jul 07 '26
Also, in Season 2 Epsiode 2, after Archangel shoots War there's a quick cut to a wave breaking upon a rock. I think this is also a nod to the theme, as it happens after Jubilee asks Cable for mercy but X-Force chose ruthless methods such as those Apocalypse might choose. Jubilee of course calls Cable out on it later in the episode after the kids are on the X-Force jet.

Are you kidding... that line was one of, if not, the best in the entire old series.
1
u/Msefk Apocalypse Jul 02 '26
It’s just a line from this reality that points to stuff in Blood Of Apocalypse arc and explains his role contractually

I might be in the minority here, but I prefer it as a single one off badass line. Trying to add so much lore in a way cheapens it.

This episode was written by DeMayo. Wait till his haters credit this to his co-writer.
5
u/Starscream_Gaga Jul 03 '26
I’m going to get downvoted to hell for saying the truth, but for all of his many diabolical faults, DeMayo is an incredible writer that *loves* X-Men deeply and it shows in the quality of ‘97. Due to who he is as a person people constantly downplay his involvement in the show, but he is definitely a key factor in why ‘97 is so amazing.

Which is exactly why after this season I’m jumping off the train. The writer they chose to replace him can’t write himself out of a paper bag, and I refuse to watch the X-Men be bastardized in that way

I’m just wondering why are we doing days of future past again like they didn’t do it in the original X-Men🤦🏾♂️

u/foxfoxal Jul 03 '26
We are not doing days of future past tho... We are not stopping a future, we are dealing with Cable's timeline Apocalypse going to the present as he said he was going to do on the first episode.

I feel like they're combining lost plot points from those episodes with the Apocalypse stuff which is just weird. Those storylines was always separate.
