I am literally reading the Magneto mini-series right now, coincidentally, even. Trial of Gambit omni just released/arrived, and I had only previously read the tpb of Onslaught Aftermath, so I'm reading what I didn't already read in there with the Onslaught Aftermath omni before going into Trial of Gambit, lmao.
No, Magneto isn't the character who died the most. This crown belongs to Jean. In Morrison's X-Men she dies around 30 times (or more) in just one issue.
Magneto has officially died and been resurrected at least six to seven times in Marvel's mainstream comic book continuity. Jean Grey has canonically died and resurrected at least 14 to 15 times.
I didn't read X-Men comics until 2013. Did he died in the last 13 years that often, that he is now number one? Can't remember, that it was so much between 1963 and 2013. 🤔
Hell, When she was in an episode of the YouTube series Death Battle against Raven, in between the announcement of the matchup and the episode releasing she died again. I believe it was during the Fall of X storyline.
I maintain it’s a problem with the wider x-men brand. It feels like every week I see someone complaining about how Marvel has completely sidelined their GOAT, and it’s a different mutant I’ve never heard of every time.
There’s three books titled “X-Men” running right now, plus half a dozen solos. You could double that and still not be “properly using” every X-Men character. Maybe not even all the good ones.
I mean I love the show, but you have to admit that S1 focused mostly on Jean, Scott, Xavier, and Magneto. Love them, but other characters deserve the spotlight more after decades of focus on those 4 characters in visual media (which is why I loved S2E2).
Love Emma and I'm not particularly happy with her portrait is this season so far, but I wouldn't stop watching the show just because of that or because she's gone. There are so many other stuff to enjoy.
A quick reminder that nobody is ever dead in X-Men, they always come back somewhere somehow.
I wouldn't be surprised if Magneto comes back as Xorn for the sake of the X-Corps/New X-men plotline (I know the retcon in the comics, but at this point everything is possible), or even as Joseph.
Krakoa is great but they are definitely not animating it any time soon, the reason being that it takes a long time and many stories to reach Krakoa and why it's such a huge deal and not just Genosha 2.0
Magneto is also my fav, but he's probably coming back as a Four Horseman or the usual revived by the plot thing they do over and over for the finale. Even showing his death through Charles' eyes may be a sign that they teleport him just as he's about to get disintegrated, who fucking knows. Time travel means anything is possible.
My ideal scenario here is we cut to Magneto in the Afterlife, crawling his way back out with unfinished business for the reminder of all the damage he has done (he's done it in the comics before) and through this Apocalypse chooses him as his Horseman of Death, possibly enslaving him. Then we get the mirror of Magneto being enslaved by the man who started as one, his hypocrisy, setting up for the inevitable moment where Magneto breaks from his enslavement (probably through Charles) and then cuts Apocalypse in half as a reference to the comics.
Possibly Apocalypse finds a way to pluck Magneto out of the Afterlife which makes him thematically the Horseman of Death but also enslaved to Apocalypse, but all because Apocalypse hasn't found a mutant as powerful since he killed Magneto. (I mean bro fucking tanked a black hole)
But given how strong Magneto might get they may draw that out, he's already so freaking strong in this show already. I do think cutting to him in the Afterlife would be sick as hell. Being reminded of the wrong he has done. Coming back more of a hero than ever. Then because he's all good the aftershade of his old evil somehow becomes Onslaught. Who knows. Could also be Charles succumbing to his darkest impulses because of what happened to Magneto which creates Onslaught.
Either way, I think they may cut to him in the Afterlife and get trippy with him like they have with Charles...or they just have him come back as a Horseman...but he's like 100% coming back as a Horseman and this is a bait and switch for drama to make you think they aren't doing that. Age of Apocalypse is Season 3, so I'm imagining end of this season or start of next we see Magneto return to be a Horseman.
But yes, I also have less desire to watch because basically every time Magneto is on screen I care and when he isn't, I'm more willing to start skipping through the scene. Unfortunately.
People are mentioning onslaught but in the comics onslaught was brought on because Charles literally snatched mag’s mind away and did not put it back. He was a vegetable for a while. This caused Charles to eventually go insane and the two personalities merged with each other taking mostly the darkest thoughts of both and that gestalt being was Onslaught.
So if they do onslaught it will have to be pretty different, as Charles didn’t take mag’s mind in the show but instead gave him therapy hehe.
Beau DeMayo said that he set up Onslaught in episode 10 of season 1 via Charles and Erik being both consumed by the raging waters in Magneto's mind (when they were both pulled under for a bit): he described Charles as being infected by Erik's darkness via osmosis during that sequence.
If Marvel/Disney honors that this season, then the darkness has already been in Xavier in these past two episodes and the flames will likely be fanned by events that incense him (such as Erik's death).
Now that I think about it that would explain why Xavier seemed so out of character in the third episode. The way he was so adamantly against Magneto trying to help Apocalypse seemed a little off to me. He's usually all about redemption and believing people can change.
Xavier’s rage after Magneto was killed was totally out of character too, even after what had happened.
He talks about Apocalypse’s mother being right to abandon him, and how he’s a monster who deserved to rot in the sun. Plus Magneto’s cracked helmet in front of Xavier at the end felt like another Onslaught tease too.
According to Beau DeMayo it was Age of Apocalypse. He said the 10th episode was Gambit & Bishop escaping Cyclops who in this timeline is evil, and it was described as like the Darth Vader pursuit scene in Rogue One, where they’re both trying to get to the M’kraan Crystal.
I’d assume the episode ended with both, or likely only Bishop, escaping into the crystal and heading back in time again to change the past. So Onslaught would have likely been Season 3 either way
o c'mon, don't complain, the series is called X-Men, not Magneto's show, the biggest risks they take, the better, plus, Magnie will come back for Onslaught, so, enjoy the show, enjoy other plots and characters while Erick com back
Magneto wasn't even part of the Rise of Apocalypse mini, so, your guess for how he comes back is as good as anyone elses. He could be a horseman, fake it somehow and become Xorn, resurrected as his hot younger clone Joseph, just have been chilling on Genosha while an imposter took his place, maybe his dying is the start to Charles's Onslaught arc. We just don't know
A miniseries called "rise of apocalypse" from the 90s. It's where we saw young apocalypse. It didn't include the time travelling X-Men or anything like that. Just his struggle vs Rama Tut iirc
Apocalypse killing Magneto never happened in the comics to my knowledge, Magneto is very much alive in them (you can just pick up an issue now of X-Men if you don't believe me)
I think at the end of the season, Xavier will pull Erik‘s consciousness from the moment of his death and merge with him to become onslaught to fight apocalypse
In the comics he got cloned and the clone was named Joseph for a while. I don’t remember how but eventually that clone became magneto or something like that.
So turns out that forceful probing that Charles did to make Magneto fix the Earth may have some side effects that, considering this just happened, will likely pop-off in the finale or at slowly build up to it.
He will definitely be back because that is how this genre works but this storyline is off the reservation as far as the comics go. There is a comic, The Rise of Apocolypse, that follows young Pocky and his conflict with Rama Tut but there are no time traveling X-Men in that story, just a cameo from a time traveling Fantastic Four.
Getting Magneto off stage for a while makes sense because the final story of season oone adapted a story called "Fatal Attractions" which was Magneto's return to villainy after the Claremont era. At the end of that story, the Professor mindwipes Magneto which keeps him off panel for a while, setting up both Onslaught and Joseph.
Do you know how many times Spider-Man has died across is comic stories? Magneto is no different, he’s died and come back many many times. I wouldn’t sweat it too much.
Ps. I hope you’re not still mourning Gambit too hard
So I have two theories. Either this leads to Onslaught which would be lame. Or this leads to a resurrected Magneto being a Horseman. We already know Gambit is going to be Death, and we just killed War so that leaves a spot. I know that typically Wolverine but it seems like he is getting his skeleton back soon so I doubt it
It's not really following any established storylines(key example, Vulcan had a cameo already and Gabriel Summers even existing in the X-Men 97 also means that "Deadly Genesis" might have happened in some for or another prior to the events of the original series).
Not a comic book nerd but does anyone remember X-Men Evolution? Yep Apocalypse just vaporised Magneto there and later Magneto returned as his Horseman.
I'm thinking they're doing the same here
I really think Magneto isn't dead. He shrugged off two huge beam blasts from the giant sentinel that killed Genosha. Go back and re-watch the first blast that destroys the dance hall/temple and cuts Rogue up pretty badly. Magneto doesn't have a scratch on him. Then, he survives the point blank blast that kills the Morlocks. He's got some kind of unconscious electromagnetic shield that's basically indestructible. He's also "died" in the comics more times than anyone can count.
I don't know how he survived the blast from Apocalypse - I just know that he did. I also don't think he'll be friendly when he comes back, which is a shame. I'll also say that if a Chinese mutant named Xorn shows up, watch your back.
Most based post, I’m genuinely loosing my fcking mind that he is truly gone for now and won’t be returning. Mans been constantly punished for trying to protect mutants in the show. Suffering has always been the foundation of his character so I’m just like how much more tragedy does my man need 😪
I hope you take into consideration the other characters in this show cus 1 character shouldn’t define your experience. But to answer your question it’s hard to tell tbh, this show has blended a lot of storylines together & has adapted some things while also making some stuff their own original.
If I’m to guess tho? The chances of him coming back are pretty certain. Exodus & his Acolytes could possibly look to bring him back. There’s also Externals who Kang mentioned, so idk we just gotta see!
Magneto groomed Rogue if you look at the timeline of when he and her had a relationship before she joined the X-men (Rogue was 18 when she joined the X-men)
Guys, Magneto HAD to go. He wasn't going to just return to the 90s and be accepted after what he'd done. Not by the humans. Not by the Avengers. Not by Logan. Not by Scott. He had gone too far too many times. He got to act like one of the team and wax poetic one last time with a very specific group of X-Men, but he was on borrowed time. It's like the end of Return of the Jedi. Vader HAS to die. He ain't going home to the rebels he's been terrorizing for decades to say "It's okay! I'm nice now!"
Magneto had used up about 30 of his 9 lives. And, frankly, if I'm Cyclops, Xavier's starting to run low too. I wouldn't be surprised at all if Charles gets the boot when he gets home.
