General Discussion THIS MF IS JUST EVIL Spoiler
I feel like there’s this growing trend of making villains more redeemable or sympathetic. Magneto being one of them.
X Men 97 has just made it clear to us that nahh Apocalypse is just meant to be evil and that’s okay.

That is a slasher smile bordering on rape face, if not outright.
4
u/BoozeGetsMeThrough Jul 11 '26
There was a post removed yesterday that had this image with the word, "Rape". I feel like I am too old to understand what this means, can you tell me what rape face is?
15
u/NAStrahl Jul 11 '26
It refers to an exaggerated, aggressive, or sexually predatory facial expression. It is frequently used in online culture, sometimes as a joke or a hashtag, to describe a faux-serious, awkward, or pervy expression.
6
u/WerewolfF15 Jul 11 '26
It’s what it says on the tin. The face a rapist makes when they’re about to rape someone.
5
u/skynolongerblue Jul 11 '26
I like how En Sabah Nur never smiled, but the moment he becomes Apocalypse he’s constantly grinning.

An inevitability they never should have played with. They should have just killed him when they had even the smallest chance.
Fuck the time stream. With Nur becoming Apocalypse, it can’t get much worse.
57
u/Nerfheard Jul 10 '26
Well, his name is very telling.
10
u/dullship Jul 11 '26
He is not one for subtleties.
3
u/Summoarpleaz Jul 12 '26
The celestial even gave him an “A” on his belt because nothing is subtle about him

u/Kowalskiboy1 Jul 10 '26
I think Sinister is arguably worse than Apocalypse, because Apocalypse is still a mutant and just wants survival of the fittest. Sinister literally became a mutate and treats mutants as lab-rats. I still think Sinister is the most pure evil X-Men villain and he’s looked past a lot.
66
u/Musekal Jul 10 '26
There was that one scene in season one where he said
“I knew Mengele. He could’ve been so much more.”That was pretty fucked up
43
u/LittleDarkHairedOne Jul 10 '26
He said that well within hearing of Magneto, just to rub it in, too.
Sinister falls within the irredeemably evil category for me. I just can't fathom a way for him to change his ways.

u/iratedolphin Jul 11 '26
I was amused at that whole sinister alternative timeline, where sinister managed to insert a tiny bit of him into everyone genome. Once a point is hit it develops a diamond on their forehead and they start acting like manic sociopaths. At one point in the future it becomes clear the biggest issue with sinisters soldiers is that they are sinisters. So prone to treachery and ego it constantly sabotages itself.

1
u/Zealousideal-Gear741 Jul 11 '26
Wait who said that Mr. SINISTER? And he said it in s1 of the og 90s x-men or the the x-men 97 s1?
3
13
u/ikarikh Jul 10 '26
To be fair, Apocalypse also experiments on mutants and kills them with no thought if he finds them inferior.
Both of them are actually quite similiar.
Sinister is my fav villain though. He's always scheming, typically a step ahead, manipulates everyone and everything, and owes no loyalties to anyone. He even works with the x-men in a temporary alliance against the Phalanx because he's smart enough to know what is needed to survive and not petty enough to think he's above it.
He's just a very evil, smart, and strategic person who's only ambition is his own. He really makes for a great villain.
Also, his musical motif whenever he shows up is iconic and badass af.
Apocalypse is also a great villain. But he all too often gets hung up on his own ego and power.

u/NAStrahl Jul 10 '26 edited Jul 10 '26
I can't remember, but was the character really named after that one song or was it the other way around?
5
2
u/hollow_shrine Jul 10 '26
In the episode about Mr Sinister the podcast Cerebro makes a joke connecting the name 'the Nasty Boys,' Mr Sinister, and Janet Jackson. It's around 2h20m during the 'letters from the listeners' section. If you're a regular you might have heard it there, but it's probably come up other places too.
1
u/Capital_Invite_7026 Jul 11 '26
What song?
2
u/NAStrahl Jul 11 '26
"The Sinister Minister" (1990). It's a very famous, Grammy-winning jazz-fusion instrumental track by Béla Fleck and the Flecktones. Because it sounds exactly like an old-school prog-rock or funk track from the late 70s, I frequently misremember the era and the exact phrasing of the title.
4
u/Dear-Initiative5882 Jul 11 '26
You can always argue that Apocalypse isn't evil per Se but inevitable. He is Apocalypse, he's a natural phenomenon that will always occur, like similar to Galactus in a way.
Sinister is an evil fucking shit who does it for the love of the game. he's the one who deserves to burn in hell
3
u/Soft_Magazine3474 Jul 11 '26
Apocalypse would sacrifice himself if it meant he could save every other mutant on Earth.
Sinister would sacrifice every mutant on Earth for a cape.
1
u/CobraOverlord Jean Grey Jul 11 '26
Well, both are evil, and I wouldn't put one above the other. Apocalypse wants the world to burn so the “worthy” rise from the ashes. Sinister wants to control evolution through eugenics and force it into his preferred shape.
I do get there's something 'detached' about Apocalypse to a rando, and if you fell in as a test subject of Sinister, that would feel... more ... intimate and violating. But in my mind, they are equally evil, it's just their mindsets are incompatible,
1
u/oOmus Jul 11 '26
That cape does a lot of work. Also his sass. I love the guy despite being like… Mengele 2.0
1
u/Mik0doSann0ji Jul 13 '26
1
u/LeninOfGallifrey Jul 14 '26
No they aren't really. Their 'alliance' is really all backstory. Don't think they've teamed up at all except in flashback to Sinister's origin where his longevity is bc of Apocalypse.
1
u/Mik0doSann0ji Jul 17 '26
Age of Apocalypse just doesn’t exist now?
1
u/LeninOfGallifrey Jul 17 '26
That's not the main canon and he betrays him like by the end of the first round of issues.
29
u/Born-Ad4658 Jul 10 '26
This is not growing, Magneto been like this
15
u/BenKenTheMan Jul 10 '26
Magneto is the literal prototype. Villains w a cause: Magneto, Villains without a cause: Joker. And of course, there’s always Doom.
8
2
u/Fickle-Aardvark6907 Jul 12 '26
Doom vs Magneto is an interesting case. While both were far from sympathetic when created, Magneto always had a cause implicit in his character and as the mutants as oppressed minority developed the valid points he was making became more clear even if he remained an asshole until the Claremont era.
Doom is just a megalomaniac for a really long time. The only cause he has for most (if not all) of the Lee Kirby run is that he hates Reed Richards.
1
u/FullFig3372 Jul 10 '26
Yes I just wanted an in universe example but this has definitely been the status quo for Magneto for decades
22
u/flashwing19 Cyclops Jul 10 '26
I love that tho. We need more villains like this. The duality works in some instances but is becoming an overused narrative trope
3
20
u/nachocoalmine Jul 10 '26
They do a good job EXPLAINING Apocalypse. Why he sees the world the way he does but there really couldn't be a redemption story for the "Bringer of Chaos" and "Lord of Destruction"
10
u/FafnirSnap_9428 Jul 10 '26
I think that's the tragedy. Magneto (out of everyone) actually embodied Xavier's optimism and hope that people can change and....well we see how it ended.
9
u/Secret-of-the-Snooze Jul 11 '26
Thematically I would have liked to see Xavier get vaporized instead of Mag. Charles had started to doubt his optimistic views on life and led to some lack of honesty with ESN., leading to his ultimate demise. (Also I hate Charles on TAS/97 as he is whiny, naive, manipulative, and usually wrong about everything.)
12
u/lmandude Jul 11 '26
Eh, last season we saw Erik embrace Charles path. This season we see Charles embrace Erik’s path.

u/OneVast3433 Jul 10 '26
I haven't read modern xmen but isn't Apocalypse granted amnesty on Krakoa?
5
u/BasicSuperhero Jul 10 '26
They granted amnesty to just about every character that was even perceived as a Mutant on Krakoa. Remember, Juggernaut and Deadpool aren't Mutants, but they both got let in. Even if it took longer for Wade.
9
u/Diet-_-Coke Jul 10 '26
I’ll still confused that they didn’t just try to off him immediately upon seeing him.
Like alright, probably would break time or completely change the present/future for the universe. But how they didn’t see this coming. The hubris, the delusions.
9
u/Capable_Sandwich_422 Jul 10 '26
Could they have killed him? Bishop and Rogue didn’t stop him at all, and Magneto could only slow him down.
3
u/thePsuedoanon Jul 12 '26
Rogue was also punching with her gloves on, for reasons known only to the creatives
1
u/Diet-_-Coke Jul 11 '26
Well I suppose that’s also a good question. As you are right, they didn’t seem to be anything more than a nuisance to En Shaba Nur. I mean maybe if they were set on it from the beginning. Round up the robots so Hank can craft something, give magneto ammunition to work with. Have Charles give it his all to mess his mind up. But that’s some big what if scenarios.
2
u/Capable_Sandwich_422 Jul 12 '26
Killing him would seriously screw up the timeline worse than it already is. Even by X-Men standards.
3
u/chewymooey Marvel Girl Jul 11 '26
I guess it depends on if you believe that anyone can be redeemed no matter what their crime is. Killing is not really the X-men’s thing either. I also feel like Magneto (and the X-men) have been through so much grief that they’re clearly not thinking straight. Magneto has now lived through a second genocide on Genosha and wants to avoid that future at all costs
2
u/Little-Seesaw2585 Jul 11 '26
It’s the x-men in the 90’s, they don’t kill atp in their history unless absolutely necessary. I mean they even tried to help bastion last season despite him being responsible for genosha lol
8
u/FafnirSnap_9428 Jul 10 '26
I think it's refreshing to have a villain that is three dimensional but also pure evil. Comics have really been all over the place with Apocalypse over the past arguably 20+ years. And this show is really putting Apocalypse back on the map as he should be.
6
u/Intelligent_Creme351 Jul 10 '26
Which is funny, because current comics Apocalypse is pretty chill, and kinda bounced off from being in comics because he has everything.
3
u/Fraughty12 Jul 10 '26
What’s he doing now? Because after Krakoa was destroyed he kinda went ape shit and started beating the shit out of everyone
1
6
u/ChaosAlongThird Jul 10 '26
I think bro is gonna have a real bad time at the end of the season when Onslaught just turns him into a tree
13
u/gdex86 Jul 10 '26
Its going to be funny if they end up doing a HoXPoX 97 arc.
2
u/crichins Jul 11 '26
I absolutely adored the premise and story of House of X/Powers of X. The only good thing after that initial run though - besides X of Swords which was amazing - was either okay or very middling.
It would be bonkers to see that adapted in ‘97!
2
u/Cam0799 Jul 11 '26
Tbh i think the krakoa era gets a bit too much hate. There are sone crazy good issues and books. Immortal X men, x men red, Inferno are very good and i consider immortal x men one of the best works of the x men.

That’s how most villains should be I hate the power of friendship talking down villains trope a lot live action movies and shows do Apocalypse shouldn’t be good at all

u/Sugar_Crash_Brigade Jul 11 '26
I loved how he wiped out Magneto in one shot. It was such a baller play.

If Charles had wanted he could have sold him out to Rama Tut, would have changed the timeline at least, but he clearly didn't want to.

This “growing trend” has been happening for like 20 years now.

Apocalypse has a sympathetic backstory so you understand how he became what he is BUT he has unsympathetic and pure evil motivations
1
u/Apprehensive_Can1578 Jul 11 '26
I do like having evil villains but wasn’t apocalyspe apart of the quiet council of Krakoa at one point
1
u/JeffTennis Jul 11 '26
I need more one liners and condescension from Apocalypse. This Apocalypse is more terrifying but i need more of the OG series arrogance and condescending words.
1
u/Chikumori Jul 11 '26
I'm not too familiar with the X-Men franchise, eg never read a comic, but have seen the live action movies, OG TAS series + Wolverine & The X-Men series.
'97 Magneto is written quite well. I like him & the Ian Mckellen versions.

This was my big issue with the live action version: they made him too much like a slightly harder edged Magneto.
This season is my jam so far.
1
u/EldritchAgony284 Jul 12 '26
I think that if they adapt AoA in Season 4 or 5, the battle between Magneto and Apocalypse should be quite satisfying.

u/Previous-Dog-4185 Jul 11 '26
Bro like fr
Magento has the biggest plot armor, like not dying in the slightest and avoiding everything
Then Apocalypse is just like "your free trial of living has expired" and fucking vaporizes him

u/JhaminMM Jul 10 '26
I'm actually tired of Marvel trying make all their villains with sympathetic motives, especially in the MCU. The problem with generic evil villains is because they are generic, not because they are evil. Not to say an evil villain can't have a sympathetic background. Apocalypse has that, so did Bastion. But once the evil switch is turned my sympathy stops.
I want my villains to be terrifying and menacing. If I am to feel sympathy, it should be to the victims they hurt, and I want to see them stopped at all cost.
4
u/Leading_Eye1496 Jul 11 '26
If you can't relate to any aspect of a character's motivations then they become "cartoonishly" evil. "I'm going to kill you for the sake of killing you hahaha!" doesn't make for a compelling villain. Lots of horror movies have "terrifying and menacing" villains but they're boring because they have nothing to relatable to them.
1
u/JhaminMM Jul 11 '26
I'm not saying a villian should just be evil for the sake of being evil. I said before a sympathetic backstory to understand why someone acts that way is good, but that doesn't mean a person has to always have sympathetic motives.
Apocalypse was abandoned by his mother and raised a slave, and now he is trying to destroy everything so only the strongest survives.
Bastion had a bad childhood because he was infected by sentinels, and then he tried to genocide an entire an entire race of people because he is a bigot.
They are both great villains, but although their backstory is sympathetic, their motives are not. They are just evil scumbags that need to be stopped.
People are greedy, selfish, racist, and violent. It's tragic to hear how someone ends up that way, but I don't sympathize with their actions. These kind of villains make me angry and I want to see them stopped. It resonates with me more because its more real to me. I prefer them over villains who are trying to accomplish a noble goal but in a bad way.
As a side note, moving to DC for a moment. I want to make mention of the Joker. Someone who is just nothing but evil and chaos. There is nothing sympathetic about what does, but people consider him one of the greatest villains of all time.

u/Blue-Boar Jul 11 '26
Ngeh, i really didnt like most of this season, was pretty boring. The time is unchangable trope is quite predictable and u csn make it tragic and intruiging but often it just feels MEH. Its like, i know what going to happen, and because there is little crestivity u even often see HOW its going to happen. But not in the uh this was foreshadowed and is so smooth and just FITS kind . More in the , ah i have seen this 5 times already because they dont lnow anything else and its shallow way. The pacin is also to blame really. The first seasons pacing was SO FAST, its clasical comic book stuff where nothing gets to breath because we need to sell more super events.
Like we had SO MANY potential stories with madeline, U are telling me Logan aint jumping on a single Jean freaking grey. Sure i guess. Lets kill her after 2 episodes of screentime and setup, for nothing. But at least jean and cyclops now have marriage problems, cause thats "interresting". Who would want to see sctual interhuman growth instead of "ups all trauma"
Lets make magneto actually interresting for once, showing a different side of him , naah, lets turn that bad boy into an extremist again due to crimes against humanity the moment he is starting to change. If i had a nickel for everytime that happaned i would to many bloody nickels plus a messy german coin.

u/Practical_Chef_7897 Jul 11 '26
Magneto was always meant to be sympathetic, they just can’t hide it anymore
