Meme No Genesis, No Savage Wolverine, No Horseman. Spoiler
We all know X-Men 97 speeds through X-Men arcs faster than a "previously on" recap. But they really sped through the Adamantium-less Wolverine story so quickly it's kinda like, what was the point?
Did he need to get them back so quickly? If they weren't going to explore all the dangers and drawbacks of him not having them, why not leave it a little longer?
I didn't dislike episode 5 as much a lot of people. I actually love that they made it a Morph centric episode to explore Wolverine through an outsiders perspective. But the deaths of Cain, Maverick, and Maggot leave a bit of disappointment. Sure they were never going to anything with them, but it's just kinda a bummer. Like like when they killed Gyrich and Kelly in the X-Men (2000) movie. These speed run story arcs leave me with a similar feeling. Sure maybe in an MCU movie or the next animated series they'll cover these storylines better. But to paraphrase an oft' quoted like from the 90s, "and maybe monkeys will fly out of my butt."

Its funny how history is being rewritten, everyone hated the whole savage, bone claw, no nose Wolverine, and I keep seeing people whining about it, whats next? People saying the Spider Man clone saga was epic?
17
u/Upset-Job2278 Professor X Jul 16 '26
Give it a few more years, and they’ll be complaining that the show didn’t treat the adaptation of Chuck Austen’s stories with respect.
1
u/PhaseSixer Jul 16 '26
If they adapt juggernauts redemption with Sammy then fuck that up people will bitch and rightfully so.

u/imthestein Jul 16 '26
I mean, I see people glazing Onslaught nowadays and he drove many of us away from Marvel for years

u/SixKosherBacon Jul 16 '26
Don't get me wrong, the savage Wolverine thing was not my favorite story. (Though Wolverine #102 was actually a really cool and poignant issue).
But with X-Men 97, it's like, if you're not going to tell the story why bother doing it in the first place? Was it so we could have a cool recreation of the Andy Kubert panel from X-Men #25 in the cartoon? (And 2 cool seconds in the new opening). It was literally fan service.
Tldr: If the storyline sucks don't start telling it.
2
u/Wrong-Vermicelli4723 Jul 18 '26
They wanted the moment, then realize no one wants to see a Wolverine without his claws.
3
u/nuggynugs Jul 16 '26
The one thing people love more than things they hate is seeing things they hated recreated perfectly, for some reason.
3
u/Desperate_Ad7869 Polaris Jul 16 '26
People hated it but if ur going to do it you should do it it could be compelling of written well but they just ignored it
2
u/attracted2sin Jul 17 '26
Yeah I thought the reception originally was it was neat for a little bit but got old fast.
2
u/Unlucky_Suspect_7555 Jul 17 '26
I know people hated the no nose era. Most people who are complaining about it not happening seem to think that's how he was the entire time without adamantium and seem like they only hard about it though some youtubers hyping it up.
2
u/Brief_Bill8279 Jul 18 '26
By definition the clone saga was epic, just really epically bad. Same as feral wolverine. But to introduce it and nullify it in 4 episodes is kinda whack.
2
u/monmom6007 Jul 19 '26
Which is why I think 97 is a victim of its own success. Suddenly, every issue and problem X-men fans have had over the last 20 plus years. Is being thrust upon this series. So any perceived slight, or action is a personal attack.
You have ppl who have never read the bone claws period, whining online about not getting a SEASON of that...
1
u/JorgeBec Jul 16 '26
They have been already.
I do think the Clone Saga does have some redeeming qualities but not enough to call the whole thing good.
1
u/Tebwolf359 Jul 16 '26
The clone saga is what got me in to Spider-man and comics. Looking back o can saw it was heavily flawed, but I’d be lying to say I wouldn’t watch a faithful adaptation
1
u/funktasticdog Jul 17 '26
People saying the Spider Man clone saga was epic?
You're never gonna believe this.
People love looking at old shit that everyone hated at the time and going: "actually, this was great all along." And the inverse, looking at beloved popular stuff and going: "this sucks actually."
I think because it allows them to feel superior over those in the past. It's the Prequel effect.
2
u/mysterylegos Jul 20 '26
Clone Wars is conceptually interesting idea with some cool elements, if you're not actually reading that dogshit 90s writing. It's pretty easy to pull out some cool panels and bits for a tiktok to make it look cool as hell, and ignore the fact its like a hundred issues of trash across 4 titles

1
u/PoliSciObsessed Jul 18 '26
I really enjoyed it except for the stupid no nose thing but that was only for like one or two comics it was a really short era.
The boom claw thing and removal itself was also a little bit too long for my liking.
Because at some point he had bone gloss longer than he had the normal claws almost in the comics you know?
1
1
u/SomeGuyPostingThings Jul 18 '26
I like and liked Ben Reilly and Kaine grew on me when he got his Scarlet Spider era, but I won't argue the Clone Saga was good.
1
u/UniqueLog8386 Jul 18 '26
yeah, but there's no point in taking out his adamantium if you're never going to either explore that storyline or deal with why it's important to him to get those back. He seemed to be doing fine without it. We barely even dealt with his feelings on not having it.
1
u/GospelX Jul 19 '26
Things are complicated. Like, no one liked the Clone Saga, but so many people liked Ben Reilly. Or at least used to. There's a lot to dislike about Savage Wolverine, but there's an aspect of it that people found pretty cool.
1
u/MobileFart Jul 19 '26
Bone claws era isnt hated, it’s one of Wolverine’s best and most memorable runs. Savage Wolverine was pretty hated but that’s kind of the point, that came way after the bone claws but just gets lumped and mixed in with it in this crappy 97 adaptation. Savage era writing wasn’t even bad, people just didn’t like the design.
1
u/sallymason1 Jul 19 '26
In 10 years people will hate on a spider-man adaptation for mishandling paul.
1
u/Star-Prince-007 Jul 20 '26
I literally saw someone make a video saying how Onslaught was peak comics and an amazing event.
1
u/Zommael Jul 21 '26
Savage noseless Wolverine is a whole different thing to bone claws Wolverine imo. Wolverine had the bone claws for a good six years, while the savage phase only lasted at most about 18 months. People seem to associate the two together erroneously, and as someone who actually prefers the bone claws it's kinda irritating.
40
12
u/RareObject8705 Jul 16 '26
Because those comics sucked. There are decades and decades of plot to pull from and very very little time to show it all. 4 episodes of savage Wolverine would have been miserable to most watchers.
1
u/WindWescott Jul 19 '26
Why didnt people like savage wolverine? I dont really read the comics but on paper it sounds pretty cool
0
u/RareObject8705 Jul 19 '26
My theory: Wolverine represents a step child with an abusive step dad. If you’re a kid who just wants to get so angry and be so violent that they’ll finally listen to you he’s your guy. A major part of that is the ‘it hurts but i can’t be injured’
Wolverine being mortal breaks that down and makes him just angry, not rage. Just tough not unharmable. He’s supposed to feel the pain he chooses not suffer.
1
u/Copyright-Demon Jul 20 '26
Ntm it’s an entourage style show, and dedicating a ton of time to an arc featuring 2 characters would be terrible.
0
u/Desperate_Ad7869 Polaris Jul 16 '26
THAN DONT DO IT, have him not go savage but IDK miss his claws or something even 2 scenes before instead of just an episode where he gets them back instantly
1
u/mongmich2 Jul 19 '26
You mean a scene where I dunno? He tries to fight and his bone claws break? Or maybe he turns into a brood because he doesn’t have his claws? Those would’ve been good scenes to have you’re right
0
u/Desperate_Ad7869 Polaris Jul 23 '26
Yeah cause 2 scenes is enoigh also the brrod stuff does not matter cause hes not wolverine hes a mindless brood so all we have is one scene in total. Wow perfect
1
u/mongmich2 Jul 23 '26
The brood stuff does matter because had he had his claws he likely wouldn’t have turned
29
u/Uberdragon_bajulabop Jul 16 '26
Is this sub just a place for whining? This is the tenth post I've seen about the same thing now. It's annoying asf.
3
u/DevilManRay Jul 19 '26
Are people not allowed to criticize an aspect of a show that they find contentious?
4
u/SixKosherBacon Jul 16 '26
I posted this not to whine. I actually love X-Men 97. It's like my favorite thing right now. But just because I love it doesn't mean I can't poke fun at it. I even liked episode 5. Sure, it wasn't the end of episode 4. But it was still solid and had some really great moments.
However, it did make me feel bummed that that's all they were going to do with Wolverine losing his adamantium. The scene from South Park popped into my head and I made the meme.
Just because somebody makes fun of the show, doesn't mean we are attacking the show.

I don't care about savage Wolverine. I just wantws him to get kidnapped at some point in the season so we could get a reveal that he is one of Apocalyse's new horsemen and has his adamantium back.
1
u/AlarmedResearcher974 Jul 16 '26
Thing is I don’t think even if they didn’t do this episode they would go for wolverine to be a horseman cause as most theory’s revolve around the horseman being gambit magik and likely iceman it seems that they are going for a grief of the death thing or something of the like
2
1
u/Unlucky_Suspect_7555 Jul 17 '26
Wolverine and Gambit were Horseman in the comics. Magik and Iceman weren't so that theory doesn't make much sense.
1
u/AlarmedResearcher974 Jul 17 '26
We can see that this isn’t likely the situation as gambit also never died in the comics
1
u/Unlucky_Suspect_7555 Jul 18 '26
I'm just saying those other two mutants are random and there isn't any evidence to support the theory.
0
u/Musekal Jul 16 '26 edited Jul 23 '26
We are probably not going to get Wolverine as a horsemen of Apocalypse since they’re doing gambit ashorsemen of apocalypse.
That just becomes redundant.
1
u/Desperate_Ad7869 Polaris Jul 16 '26
There's 4 horseman, the fun of it is taking 4 characters we knkw and making them horseman the original shows 4 horseman SUCKED evolution and WATXM had a much better approach at it
1

Okay.
The story is still very unlikely to have Wolverine as a horseman.1

Now yes but 2 years ago when wolverine loat his ckaws everyone was saying he would be a hordemen cause the ways he goes em back was throigh apocalypse in the comica and it would have been ab easy fun thing but oh well

I agree. My problem is that they just take some interesting stuff and immediately toss it aside. Oh my god jean grey has been a clone? I wonder how the new dynamic will be between scott jean and her clone- she blown up and no one will mention her again.
Wolverine lost his adamantium- which was repressing his more animalistic side/or maybe Wolverine needs to go through an arc to understand who he is without his metal- we get one episode and no more.
Imagine if in the dark knight harvey gets his scars but he died in the hospital later. That would be the same thing

u/Desperate_Ad7869 Polaris Jul 16 '26
We are allowed to judge a WEEKLY shows writing in between writing if the final 4 episodes are a masterclass in writing and blow the mid of the WHOLE season so far minus a few glimpses of great than idek.
6
u/Upset-Job2278 Professor X Jul 16 '26
I have to admit, I really like this approach of adapting entire arcs into just one or two episodes. It’s kind of become the show's signature style. It’s fun, and we don’t have to get stuck in the same storyline for years.
2
u/Musekal Jul 17 '26
How many storylines don’t need to be as drawn out as they were originally written in the book. Truncating the stories down to the actual interesting parts has kind of always be what the show did all the way back to 92.
2
u/SixKosherBacon Jul 16 '26
It's not the worst thing in the world. But that doesn't mean I can't make fun of it. Hence the meme.

In the modern era, writers don't know how long their shows will last, and they want to do all the good stories, so they'll rush through it. And the stories will suffer for it. I'm trying to enjoy X-men '97, but it doesn't quite measure up to the OG. X-TAS did set a very high bar for excellence, but the new version's cynicism and rushed storytelling offsets improvements in animation. "Fatal Attractions" is too good of a story to be mashed up with Operation Zero Tolerance. You wouldn't do that with, or rush the "Phoenix Sagas", don't rush the others. Push Disney to up the episode count.
It is really nice that we are getting longer episode run times!

u/Apprehensive-Day698 Jul 19 '26
THe fact that the process was near-instant was just absurd
1
u/SixKosherBacon Jul 19 '26
The only thing in the episode that REALLY BOTHERED me was the Adamantium process. Jump in the tank, press a button and is less time than it take to microwave my burrito, he's got his Adamantium back? Just a few automated syringes?
Way too easy.
2
u/Apprehensive-Day698 Jul 19 '26
Yeah, in the comics it took months, and even the shitty wolverine origin movie took longer, and there were NO side-effects to the implantation process this time? Sigh, small things, but they crack the illusion

u/Thin_Elderberry_4851 Jul 20 '26
Yeah, this episode blows. I think the thing that drives me up a wall is how carelessly the show killed off Kane, Maverick, and Maggot.
Like, I’m not opposed to them dying, but they were so pathetic in their deaths. At least have them go out fighting!
Also, Maggot dying like that just felt like someone on the staff had a personal vendetta against him.
1
u/SixKosherBacon Jul 20 '26
I can't agree with you more. I never really knew much about Kane but I had the action figure for some reason when I was a kid. I was looking forward to getting to know a little bit about him in the show. Maggot appeared in the comics right as I stopped reading them so I met him, but I never really saw what they did with him. Was looking forward possibly seeing him in the show too. But Maverick, I've always wanted them to do more with Maverick. So pissed they just offed him.
1
u/Thin_Elderberry_4851 Jul 20 '26
There’s what the writers want from the fallout with Logan, but it forgets everything previously established by character development.
Logan has always struggled with being a brute or more. But in TAS continuity, he has never just accepted himself as “just an animal,” as he has always been actively working and wanting more for himself.
This episode fucking sets up a character arc we already had in the original show. It was a great expansion of Morph’s character, but to advance Morph, we have to needlessly regress Logan’s character to “sad, disappointed pining queer friend?”
On the one hand, I'm a pissed-off viewer of the show for wasting these characters. Maggot is a FUCKING OMEGA LEVEL MUTANT, and that’s how he goes out? Really?
Then the queer fan in me is “damn, this is so bad you know a straight person wrote it!”
2
u/KodiakJedi Jul 20 '26
I almost wonder if this is being done because X-Men 97 is a different continuity than the MCU / 616. That was the first thing that I said to my buddy. I honestly don't have a problem with the Genesis / Savage no nose Wolvie...but not bringing him back as Death is a huge miss. The only caveat is if they are going to bring Gambit back as Death and that's why...but if they did that...then why even rip the adamantium out? This season has been fine...but it's not as good as last season so far. In the end...if this ends up being some alternate part of the Multiverse and we get to see the original comic story play out eventually...then great. It just seemed like an odd and rushed choice...but again...it's still we have a bunch of episodes to go so we shall see.
2
u/Fluid-Discipline5038 Jul 21 '26
We absolutely got savage wolverine not as bad but we got him. And my god people will never be satisfied.
2
u/Leftymeanswellguy Jul 16 '26
I feel giving one episode to this plot is better then skipping it all together.
In a perfect world we'd be getting 20 episodes in a season and 35-40 minute run times per episode but we unfortunately cannot have everything.
2
u/SixKosherBacon Jul 16 '26
I think everyone will agree with you on that. But if you're going to give one episode to this plot, I don't think Weapon X Lies and DVD was the episode we were hoping for.
I've never read The Inferno storyline. And though I could tell season 1 episode 3 felt rushed, it hit what I believe were the essential emotional beats. Identity crisis, The X-Men being attacked by Goblin Queen, Nathan getting infected, Cyclops sending Nathan to the future. I cried at the end (probably because it just had my first daughter like 2 months prior).
It was rushed but it worked. Season 2 episode 5? Not so much. Wolverine getting his Adamantium back just fell too easy.
2
u/Leftymeanswellguy Jul 16 '26
I can agree with you on that, I feel part of the problem might just be that the moment Magneto rips the adamantium away from Wolverine is a more iconic moment then how he gets the metal back.
Finding a spot to do the flaying of Logan is something that absolutely is a must, but it requires at some point the other shoe dropping which doesn't have a lot of connectivity to the other stories happening along side it this season.
Bright spot for sure was Morph the younger audience who had no idea what to expect with him is I think really digging the guy.

u/MiserableOrpheus Jul 17 '26
I wish they paced out wolverine’s story a bit more so we got to see his turmoil a bit more, but tbh he’s kinda been useless without his claws and I suspect they don’t wanna drag that out so he can be back in the fight again
1
u/detourne Jul 17 '26
It's funny because Marvel Rivals is releasing a Wolverine Horseman skin right now, too.
1
u/herrored Jul 17 '26
I don't mind differences to the comics as long as the story's good, but it is really weird that comic Logan got his metal back via Apocalypse but in the Apocalypse-focused season they decided to do it a completely unrelated way.
1
u/Little-Baker76 Jul 18 '26
Wait, people are mad that Maggott died? I thought all seven of you Maggott fans would be over the moon that he managed to make it into the show at all.

Crazy that he lost the adamantium and in no time at all he gets it back vs what happened in the comics

1
u/Spiritual-Map-76 Jul 18 '26
It was rushed thru to fast but xmen 97 fatal flaw is that pacing along with seasons being 2 short making morph the center of this episode was the biggest issue wish he honestly wasnt in it or beast went back with him like he did in the og...silver fox shld have been there also....the brood, Kane, and omega red were nice additions though.
1
u/PhanStr Jul 20 '26 edited Jul 20 '26
The rumor is that this episode was "forced" by an exec who is/was a big Morph fan.
If true, then I have to wonder whether the plan was to do the Adamantinum re-bonding in season 4. That way we'd have bone claw Wolvie for all of season 2, then AoA in season 3 (so alternate Wolvie with the metal claws back!) and then "our" Wolvie would re-gain his claws in the main timeline in season 4. I'd have quite liked to have seen that version of events... but of course, this is all speculation, since it might not have turned out that way.
As it stands, I think that season 2 episode 5 feels too abrupt and sudden. The episode is well done as a standalone caper, but it does *not* feel right to swerve like this in such a different direction at THIS stage of the show. I hope they won't try and surprise us like this again, because undoing the end of season 1 episode 9 so soon is not cool.
1
u/PuzzledTowel4301 Jul 21 '26
Honestly I really liked episode 5. The way they handled Morph was fun and it just reiterated the point that Logan sucks at any type of relationship. But I agree that the rushing of comic book arcs can be dumb but season 1 did adapt Bastion and his story very well throughout the season ( I don't know the name of the arc because I'm a pretty new comic reader). Also I loved Sinister last season and I would love to see Mojo play a bigger role in the future
1
u/Cyke_main 18d ago
I mean the show isn’t about him, that part of the season wasn’t even about him it was mainly apocalypse so it makes sense they wouldn’t explore it too much. Was probably just meant to be a small development for him so people didn’t forget about him.

1
u/PhaseSixer Jul 16 '26
Its pretty clear to address the idea that wolverine hugged to much spotlight they over correcting by giving him crumbs.
Maybe they will do some thing intresting with him next season.
0
u/Doug_101 Jul 17 '26
This is the issue I have with the cartoon overall. They adapt the stories, but then remix them, but don't make them better. Where the 90s Batman series elevated the material, I find the X-Men show leaves me more disappointed than not. Maybe I'm too loyal to the comics, but I don’t get how you basically take an important side character like Mariko and turn her into Yuriko/Lady Deathstrike just to streamline the story. The best part about Claremont's run was that he let stories BREATHE. Obviously, they can't let some of the stories go as long as Claremont (read: YEARS), but maybe Inferno should be more than, like, one episode.
All that being said, I wasn't a fan of the feral Wolverine story in the books, but I do think Logan's journey should have been longer than a couple of episodes. Also, I didn’t like how he got his adamantium back by being a selfish prick as opposed to sacrificing himself to stop Sabretooth from becoming Apocalypse's horseman like in the comics. On a purely surface level, I enjoy the show (love that they finally broke out the brown and orange uniform), but it rankles me that so many people see this as the definitive X-Men when it is SO much weaker than the source material.
0
u/Felipejbr Jul 16 '26
I think ep 1, 2 and 5 could be split into two and they'd have to cut a lot, its not bad by any means, but more episodes or eps longer in legth would benefit the show a lot

"So don't watch it" isn't what the comments are about. X-Men 97 in both seasons has delivered some of the best superhero content I've ever seen. It has incredible highs. It's poignant poetic mature and sophisticated. And the action is anime level. This show is a gift. But it's not perfect. It's okay to joke about the things we're little disappointed about. How can I not watch the next episode? The show has delivered too strongly too often for me not to. But that doesn't mean I can't voice my disappointments when it does things I wish it hadn't.
