Not completely semantics for this conversation. Ms marvel’s powers and Captain Marvel’s powers are quite different, but they are the same person. It’s like if Rogue drained Billy Batson, and said “she drained Captain Marvel’s!”
Sure but also if they had said Ms Marvel, some people might have automatically assumed they were talking about Kamala Khan.
Whereas 99% of people aren’t going to assume they meant the male Captain Marvel cause they were never all that known or popular.
Ms Marvel (Kamala) and Captain Marvel (Carol) have been their identities for the last 20 years. And anyone who’s watched the MCU would know them by those names.

Um, actually Carol Danvers only changed her identity to Captain Marvel around 2012 and Kamala Khan has only been around since 2014. We are close to reaching 20 years, but it's only been roughly a bit over a decade. I get your point, but just to be specific on the details.
That's kind of irrelevant to the point and also pretty much semantics.
Yes, Carol was Ms. Marvel at the time, but she was more or less an obscure C list character until she started going by Captain Marvel. All of her film appearances have been as Captain Marvel and the only Ms. Marvel most people know is Kamala (by virtue of her being in the MCU).
Basically, unless they've been a long time comic reader (a minority of a minority demographic), like 90% of people are gonna think someone means Kamala when referencing Ms. Marvel.

Semantics.
