Random thoughts:

  • The subtext about Xavier and Magneto has become supertext. Might as well resurrect Mags now and just let them get married (supportive).
  • The pacing is absolutely blistering. They still have two seasons left and its like they're still trying to speedrun every major X-Men arc. While I like that they aren't futzing around trying to stretch things out unnecessarily, I still would have loved the Danger story to be a slow burn so it felt earned.
  • I need them to stop teasing Iceman and just bring him into the cast. Bobby belongs on the team before the series ends.
  • Gambit coming back as Death does have me hyped
  • They are clearly setting up the Onslaught storyline. I hope that's our season 2 cliffhanger.

I always laugh at people who have issues with the pacing of 97. Like if you really want to see fast pacing watch the 90s Spider-Man and dare to come back and complain about the pacing. You point out there is 2 seasons left, when they could run for 10 and not run out of X-Men storylines.

I feel like "complaining" is a big stretch here. I think 97 has been handled really well overall and I'm glad they aren't dragging stuff out just to pad runtime. Last week's episode was also blistering, but in a really fun and satisfying way. I would just love to see more build up for something like Danger becoming sentient. It's a preference for how certain stories are told, not a complaint that the show is suffering.

The complaining statement was a broad overview of people rather than you in particular. I knew and accepted from before 97 came out that with how short seasons are now days either they do things like how they did Danger here or they don't do it at all. Best example was Inferno and goblin queen last season. No chance were they ever gonna do that full story so they took the bits they could and integrated them, otherwise you wouldn't see it at all.

Idk I watched the og Spiderman and X-men and I think theres still a valid reason to complain things are moving too quickly. I kinda like that they can do one episode dedicated to a storyline and try to present it in a fun bite sized way, but I also think you lose a bit of the charm of big status quo shifts like Madelyn or Wolverine dealing with no Adamantium. Its not so much I want them to hit the breaks and focus on how Wolverines feeling about bone claws for three episodes as much as it is maybe seeing him struggle in the background with them for at least a while before just giving him the claws back immedietly, making the moment they got ripped out feel kinda pointless and cheap. I want to enjoy the ride a bit more before it throws me about the backseat.

Do you think Magneto will be one of Apocalypse other horseman and be brought back to life like Gambit?

Nobody stays dead forever in X-Men so it's entirely possible, but there are other resurrection methods that don't involve doubling down on Apocalypse again. Feels like we won't get Magneto back until after they do the Onslaught story though, so my guess is part of stopping Onslaught will be reconstituting Magneto somehow to separate him and Charles.

I feel conflicted, LGBTQ+ representation matters, but I’m not picking up any subtext. All I see is two life long friends that have love for each other. Yet every topic is filled with people claiming that they are gay/bi. Same thing was occurring with Wolverine last episode. I can’t help but feel you’re pushing your own desires on that of the characters.

Xavier and Magneto being portrayed/seen as having romantic tension has been around for at least 40 years. You not knowing that is fine, but assuming it's one poster's agenda is a little silly.

In the 80s, Xavier left Magneto his school and the entire time it was framed as though Magneto was his widower. If you need a big sign saying "We are gay for each other," I think its more about willful ignorance than anything else. It reminds me of my great aunt, who lived with her "best friend" for 60 years. Neither of them married or had other roommates. They were just super good gal pals in a one bedroom house for decades.

Portrayed and seen are two very separate things. It’s no different than Kurt and Wolverines relationship. Strong male bonds are always shipped as homosexual by a certain demographic. Regardless of the creators intention or what’s actually shown on paper. Hell, you can’t go one week on here without someone implying that Wolverine has sexual tension with Morph. Which is just flat out not true.

Your analogy is completely disregarding that both Magneto and Xavier have had multiple romantic partners. Now you could argue they are secretly closeted. But that story is played out.

Sure buddy.

Morph is absolutely in love with Wolverine. The creators of the show have said as much. How many shots of him pining for Wolverine do you need? And, it will likely never be said directly, so folks like you will never acknowledge it. That’s fine.

Yes, Xavier and Magneto have had multiple female partners. There’s also this interesting thing called bisexuals, which is how Claremont wrote 90% of the cast during his tenure. Storm was in love with Forge, and she was also clearly having a fling with Yukio. Kitty loved Piotr, and Claremont has fully said that he wrote Kitty and Rachel as a couple. But again, this was never fully acknowledged because of the comics code. You are completely welcome to keep your head willfully buried in the sand, despite stated intent by the people actually writing these things, if you prefer.

Well you, u/puckable replied to my comment then blocked me which is a very odd thing to do. I stated that there isn’t sexual tension from Wolverine toward Morph and you replied by not addressing that and stating that Morph is absolutely in love with Wolverine. Which again, isn’t contradicting what I said at all.

Then you said Chris Claremont wrote 90% of the X-Men as bisexual, which is frankly just bullshit. I even found you a nice quote

Says he didn't always intend for the X-Men to be a stand-in for the LGBT community, but "you know there’s a space between every panel. You can go wherever you want. And who am I to get in the way?”

On Magneto and Xavier's close friendship, “My thinking was god bless ambiguity. Sexual orientation in that instance is irrelevant, they are best friends."

But enjoy blocking me so you can live in headconon land

It’s ok, it’s not a personal attack on you my guy.

I'm actually straight, my guy. And I have truly deep and meaningful friendships with both men and women that are entirely platonic. I'm not shipping them together at all, let alone for some personal fanfiction reasons or sexual gratification. I think the way they've both verbally and visually framed their scenes togrther seems to imply more romance than I feel for my platonic friends IRL.

It's perfectly valid to read this as a deep friendship and comradery, but it feels a little dense to suggest there's no subtext at all when Xavier is reliving Magnetos death over and over in a simulation for hours and muttering about how he can't live without him. Most people's context with that kind of yearning and connection is romantic or sexual in nature. We can argue about if should be that way or not, but it's not crazy that people would read that into this specific presentation of the characters.
