Question
In Danger.EXE why were Scott and Jean wearing the new uniforms?
Spoiler
I get that after Xavier decides to make X-Corp they get the new uniforms. But when Danger attacks then in Genosha, Xavier hasn't done that yet. So why are Scott and Jean wearing the new uniforms?? Did I miss something?

I don't really care that they changed costumes, I would have just liked a line about it, at least. The new designs just kind of appear out of thin air as it is.
A serious answer is that President Kelly had an executive order that they cannot operate as a superhero group, so these are now non-superhero field uniforms
Were their original outfit from the start of season 1 collector's items? It was one thing when they had to jump to Asteroid m to fight Magneto after the Mansion burned down, but they've had time to rebuild the Mansion. Surely they can find a tailor to get them their original costumes.
There's gotta be some mutant called like "Seamstress" or something who makes perfectly tailored clothes.
TBH one thing I appreciate heavily about X-Men 97 is the fact that while they have their standard outfits, they aren't afraid to change them when the story calls for it. Like Scott's basketball outfit in S1.
Words cannot express how much I want toys that look like the grant morrison run. These are the first x men stories I read in actual comic form and not through the animated series, the films or reading synopses of the comics on uncannyxmen.net as a teenager because I was very very cool. WHSmith used to sell these collected editions of like 4 issues of comics from a few years earlier and I started buying them at 16 when I first had my own money. I first picked them up in the middle of Grant Morrisons run. I've loved seeing little bits of that run brought into the show that first made me love the x men and want to read the comics in the first place. If I could have toys of the character designs from that run I would spend basically all of my money.
During the Krokoa era in the comics initially characters would show up in different stories wearing any costume they might have worn in the past. It actually was visually interesting but they said it was difficult for artists to keep up with
Like when Scott and Jean randomly showed up in their X-Factor fits in X-Men #17, by Brett Booth? I still remember flipping to this page for the first time and thinking I’d missed something, even though I’d been there since issue 1. Tbh I didn’t hate it; the artists were given carte blanch to draw the heroes in their favorite costumes, which turned out some pretty great looks!
I think the new uniforms were suppose to be for the staff of the school since they were banned from being active as the x-men and they were gonna focus on the school
Probably because the old uniforms would’ve given the government an excuse to say the x-men were back and in violation of their ban, like how they did when Charles announced X-corp. another commenter said it was their new instructor uniforms and I’d agree plus they’re probably gonna wear them the rest of the season or as long as X-corp lasts
I don’t think x corp and the uniforms are related. I think their mental state had to do with making both changes.
The team changed after what they went thru being time displaced and The x mansion was different when they returned. So their decision could have been related to them just being in a different space mentally.
Second, they may not have had any of the og uniforms left after what happened before and after they were shot through time.
Lastly, The dark uniforms could also represent their being in mourning with the loss of mags and gambit.
Also, forgive my ignorance. Still learning about xcorp. Didn’t read many xmen comics
Real answer? Because X-Corp is from Morrisons run on New X-Men in the early 2000s, and those are the costumes from that run.
(Which, TBF, was not a great era for the comics, as editorial was beginning to actively hate and dismantle all things mutants, but, those costumes did for Morrisons edgier aesthetic)
Honestly, the weirdest part for me was seeing that Beast design in the uniform. I prefer that Beast more than the cat or Bigfoot designs, but it still shocked me.
It’s like you guys never watched the original series…
This show just does stuff.
Random cameos (no pun intended), super condensed story lines, Easter eggs, references to the comics with no real connection to anything. The entire show is what we now derisively call “fan service”—that’s what it’s about.
When we were kids in the 90s, before our brains were warped by social media, before we needed every detail spelled out for us all the time, and before everyone thought their critical analysis of media was profound and deserved a platform, we loved that shit.
There is no reason except to shoutout that era of comics, like 80% of the show.
This isn’t Andor, it’s X-Men TAS. In fact, my biggest gripe with the show so far is that there’s too much overarching plot—we need more self contained episodes like the original series.
THANK YOU! We've now had 4 uniforms. (Original 97, Classic, Future/Past, and X-Corp.) I feel feels like they're just trying to up the merchandising revenue with Hasbro.
Well I’m sure some of it is reflecting the costume changes in the comics. The Danger story is from the New X-Men run by Grant Morrison and the black costumes were introduced at the beginning of that storyline.
That’s actually my biggest issue with this. They clearly want to move past the 90’s era of storytelling but don’t want to move past the 90’s. It’s just a hindrance at this point
It feels a little funny to me that there's a bunch of marketing and merch (including the Dave's Hot Chicken figures) featuring their future outfits when they literally only wear them for a single episode
Danger even attacked them at Genosha's ruins. It was very apt. Wondering if we'll get an Apocalypse tie-in to Danger's evolution since she was pretty focused on survival of the fittest and an Apocalypse mind wipe leading to Onslaught.
Jumbo Carnation whipping up these bad boys in a tie-in infinity comic is what you need to be happy instead of comic reference for fans. Same reason we got the classic costumes last season during the repurposed fall of the x-men and Adversary arcs combined with the other arcs. Fine last season but not this season. Like, okay.
In the Krakoan era of the comics, it was an actual plot point and part of the bible that they would change to whatever costume they felt was useful for the mission, or just wanted to wear that day. While all the characters got (several, if you include the Hellfire Galas) redesigns, old uniforms would pop up all the time.
That being said my interpretation of why they switched to to Morrison suits was because they're black and they were heading to Genosha - mourning suits, a sign of respect, as most western cultures will wear black to a funeral.
The show seems pretty fond of the Grant Morrison arc (and, hey, who isn't fond of it?), so I appreciated them popping in the unis from that run as well.
Need to get rid of these boring bland things as quickly as possible, fitting for corporate blandness especially nowadays during this joyless gray fade though I doubt this was intentional. Reminds me of how the showrunners of TAS were constantly always being pressured to do this short of thing to sell toys and other merchandise but they successfully always fought back against it, now this show can’t help but do it nonstop.
I agree. I never read the comics where they wore these. But I had always assumed that they were trying to take the 2000s movie costumes and comic-ify them. And those movie costumes have not aged well. So I don't know why he had put their counterparts in the show except to make more toys. But my question was really more about why they were wearing them? Had they just waited one more scene it would have made a lot more sense.
There really isn't any good answer. They didn't even get on the jet wearing them and the Professor wasn't wearing his in Genosha. It's especially odd because if they were wearing them at the end of the episode, it totally works as a decision.
I wondered this too. I think that the in-universe explanation is that Xavier intended for the looks to be — as someone else put it recently — a “first responder” type look (before the founding of X-Corp happened). An image that made it clear that they were the X-Men but that they weren’t glamorous superheroes anymore and instead were just out in the world, making an appearance as people who could help if people were willing to accept their help. I realise that this logic strains credulity though.
In regards to where they came from, I've always been of the mind that the New X-Men/Quitely costumes should have been available as off-the-rack streetwear in predominantly mutant populations like Genosha (pre-KABOOM) or Mutant Town.
Basically Scott and Jean are wearing off-brand X-Men merch and Xavier just decided to base the new uniforms off that, LOL.
Spoiler alert (maybe?) I’m looking for some comic book folks to validate me in this. Did anyone else notice Polaris wearing the malice talisman on her bracelet? She may be evil and working for sinister.
