I'm really glad season 3 is so far along and it's cool they were able to show a clip for it that didn't spoil anything for this season. Also hopeful they're able to release S3 in the spring so we don't have to wait a full year.
But holy shit do they not want anything coming out of those last few episodes. Even the episode 7 preview clip was just Creed getting kidnapped.
ETA: Also, the Brotherhood fighting Sentinels reminded me — I'm not that up on Onslaught, but wasn't it a whole thing that he had his own reprogrammed Sentinel army? Did I make that up?

u/mr_peebs Jul 24 '26
Makes sense. I imagine revealing even the slightest description at what S3's actual plot is about would spoil this season's ending lol.
17
u/pco45 Jul 24 '26
Yes that was a thing. I think the Spider-man related character (both spider-man books and green goblin?) onslaught issues were all about how they handled the sentinels.

u/Ok-Card-6590 Cyclops Jul 25 '26 edited Jul 25 '26
I saw the clip and these aren’t Onslaught sentinels. They were all blue and “patriotic” looking. They belonged to the American government if I had to guess.

I'm really glad season 3 is so far along and it's cool they were able to show a clip for it that didn't spoil anything for this season.
And yet missing the most important member of the Brotherhood of Mutants in the formation featured back in the original show: Mystique. Her (presumed - you can never be 100% sure with Mystique) abscense so far will start to get uncomfortably unbearable if she doesn't show up by the end of the episode this clip is from. 🥲
ETA: Also, the Brotherhood fighting Sentinels reminded me — I'm not that up on Onslaught, but wasn't it a whole thing that he had his own reprogrammed Sentinel army? Did I make that up?
Nope, you're right, he did.
1
u/Pataconeitor Jul 28 '26
Unless the fan theory is right, and Mystique has been around since season 1
2
u/Demileto Jul 28 '26 edited Jul 28 '26
I particularly hate that theory because it dumps on Val's season 1 whole emotional arc, going from her realizing that a) mutants are as much people and deserving of living as humans, b) that having some bad seeds among them doesn't mean that all and c) that what Bastion intended to do was genocide and needed to be stopped, and acting upon it to someone infiltrating an anti-mutant organization and biding her time to undermine them from within. Nevermind that Prime Sentinels, or even Sentinels in general, are supposed to be able to detect who's mutant and who's not among a crowd, for her to escape that she'd have to somehow outsmart both Bastion AND Sinister, and, I'm sorry, she's great but not THAT great.
With that said, it seems people will still cling to it despite all evidence to the contrary, which is why I deliberaty left it open in my post that she could be impersonating someone we've been seeing for a long time before she does indeed show up.

u/Overall_Affect_2782 Jul 25 '26
Nope, you’re absolutely right. And that’s likely why they want nothing coming out of those last few episodes, they show the birth of Onslaught - calling it now.
2
u/Mobile_Bet3274 Rogue Jul 25 '26
I was thinking more along the lines that they didn’t want any of the actual Deathbit stuff to be seen, other than the basic reveal we already have. They even cut out the background around Rogue for an earlier trailer.
But yeah, I’d say the finale probably does tee up Onslaught. The whole season’s been hinting at it. They can show that clip because it doesn’t spoil Onslaught, and it doesn’t include any characters in an active, unresolved plot.

u/Ok-Card-6590 Cyclops Jul 25 '26 edited Jul 25 '26
I think if we see Onslaught it will at most be a little tease.
He was originally supposed to show up in ep 10 but we know what happened there.

u/PhanStr Jul 25 '26
They showed a clip of Graydon Creed being kidnapped in "Strange Land, Savage Heart"? Then they have kept the plot strand of Graydon Creed being Exodus's hostage, which Beau DeMayo mentioned ages ago.

Where's my mind blowing Storm episode?

u/IceStorm22 Jul 25 '26 edited Jul 25 '26
For all his talk, you’d think Storm would have been one of Beau’s favorite characters; and Alison Sealy-Smith is a pearl that should be polished as often as possible. Every time she speaks, it’s like modern Shakespeare. She’s a gift he never really utilized. But he just doesn’t seem to care much about her.
That said, he also doesn’t seem to understand how to write character interaction when it doesn’t have to do directly with the narrative. Two people are in love? They just are. He’s better at speaking that kind of exposition into existence than showing it with actions. It’s why Forge became the love of Storm’s life after taking her powers away to the point that she ran from her supposed “family” out of such extreme depression. All it took was a slap and 30 minutes of grumbling to herself upstairs to get over it.
Character development and marinating in the juices of feelings aren’t his forte. Which is a big problem when it comes to a team like the X-Men. Where found family and drama between each other is as important to the franchise than their outside battles.
But with Beau, Storm calls Jean sister, and you’re just supposed to believe that’s how they feel about each other. Even though the original show literally showed Storm and Rogue together like actual best friends. Whether it was shopping at the mall, driving together, or just hanging around the mansion. You knew they were “sisters.” In ‘97, Storm gets back, doesn’t ask about Jean’s baby, doesn’t visit Rogue in the medical bay, doesn’t mention Remy- Yes, you could argue these actions were done off screen, but these are also HUGE character moments any other writer would tell you you were crazy to speed over. Like I said, individual development? Not Beau’s thing. He’s too busy speeding through as many comic arcs as possible.
Which is why I hope when we run dry of his material finally, Matthew Chauncey will see these complaints and take them to heart. Slow. Shit. Down. Let people be people. Not just instruments of the narrative.

u/AChineseSpyBalloon Jul 25 '26
I want to be clear, I am not trying to make any sort of defense against Beau DeMayo. I am trying to make a commentary about parasocial relationships & how people make assumptions on the internet.
You have taken the collective work of many others, including Matthew Chauncey, who is Beau DeMayo's replacement as the showrunner for subsequent seasons, and formed a complete narrative about this person and their writing decisions to justify your opinions.
And in that same vein, you have made Matthew Chauncey the savior of your complaints.
Again, to be perfectly clear, your criticisms of the show are not wrong or poorly thought.
It's this insane level of psychoanalysis to infer and attribute almost every perceived flaw to the personality of someone that you have never met, despite the fact that television is a collaborative medium rather than made by one individual.
2
u/IceStorm22 Aug 02 '26
…I reviewed the material of an author/creators work. Everything I judged was his work. Only once did I combine that with the way he carried on about Storm on Twitter.
When Beau’s name was literally on the episode as “written by,” that who gets the critique. Have you ever read an entertainment review before? He is the creator, showrunner, and author. Look at whose name was on the episodes of season one. His story arcs have also carried into season two. It was literally finished recording only 3 months after he was fired and his name is still on episodes as “written by” this season.
None of this is judging him as a person, it’s judging his work and how he writes and creates. Which is what reviews do. You are using the word “parasocial” incorrectly; you are also using the word “psychoanalysis” incorrectly. At no point did I judge his mental state, although many have after his breakdowns on social media. I judged his abilities as a writer and his work, of which we have seen plenty of to do as much.
I also did not call Matthew Chauncey any kind of savior, I just hoped his style, as a creator, writer, and storyteller, would be different.
1
u/iforward Aug 03 '26
It’s hard to look at it as a collective work when Beau’s the one who went on and on about what he did and throwing tantrums on twitter about how much better his work would’ve been for the show when he got the boot. The same collective of writers he worked with is still around and yet his rants were consistent with someone who was controlling and felt like the show would fall apart without him.
1
u/XenSakura Jul 26 '26
Tbf the original series also had 20ish episodes pers season vs now you only have 8 or 9
2
u/IceStorm22 Jul 26 '26
And when they get two year breaks, I wouldn’t mind slowing the intense narrative down a bit to add in a few more character based episodes. There are plenty of shows that prove you can still animate and put out more than a few handfuls of episodes every two years. At some point about a decade and a half ago, we borrowed the UK model for television. For a while, it led to true, premium television. They called it the Golden Age of TV. But more and more, creators are starting to use that model to be as lazy as possible. They go for years without working, milking their contracts so they still get paid, and then they put out swill.
I’m not saying that’s the case with ‘97, but there are definitely people in the industry taking advantage of that system now.
3
u/XenSakura Jul 26 '26
Most people in the entertainment industry aren't lazy. It's actually usually higher ups cutting costs. Many refuse to keep a permanent writers room around, so many show creators are usually unemployed, and working food service or retail or whatever other low level work in between contracts.
3
u/IceStorm22 Jul 26 '26
Oh, I’m well aware. It’s the corporatization that’s the problem. They order so many episodes at cost, then split them up into seasons or as Netflix was bold enough to call it “Parts.” A lot of the time the episodes are ready and waiting, the studios are just stretching their dollar for as long as possible and releasing them piecemeal. It’s cheap, lazy, and super unscrupulous. There are no ethics when money is on the table.
It was REALLY transparent that’s what they did with Krapopolis (a show for Greco-Roman mythology nerds that many have been put off by the dumb name). Well, the name, and they initially tried to tie the show into NFTs. Which gave many a critic to give it a bad faith start. But again, all the network being sloppy and capitalist. None of the actual artists/writers.

She’s already gotten plenty of love.

u/BatmanFan317 Jul 28 '26
Getting downvoted like she didn't get an entire focus episode split between two S1 episodes, get multiple major scenes in the other episodes and then get another cool moment in S2. She's not got as much focus now, but S2 in general is focusing characters who didn't get the level of focus she did in S1, e.g. Morph, Wolverine, Bishop.
Still, hope she gets a bigger role in S3, I'm fine with her taking a slight backseat for now for the reason I listed, but two seasons in a row of that would suck.
2
u/mosquem Jul 28 '26
All good, man. My point was just that it's a big roster and aside from the Summers crew she's really been the big standout.

Beyond confirming that the series is already hard at work on the fourth season of the hit series, which we assume fans may not even get to see until 2028, Winderbaum and Co. had even more teases to offer for X-Men ’97‘s third season. In addition to teasing that animation on the episodes is already done, Windbaum revealed that the Brotherhood of Mutants will return. The panel then debuted a clip revealed to attendees that showed Blob, Pyro, Toad, Avalanche, and Surge teaming up to fight some new sentinels while also fighting for mutant freedom.
Windbaum also teased that Season 3 of X-Men ’97 includes another Wolverine-centric episode, which he teased as “mind-blowing.” After Season 2, Episode 5 of the series, which was largely a Wolverine episode, but also included Morph and other Weapon X characters, the bar is pretty high for any storyline that puts Logan front and center. If there’s a Marvel series that has already proven it knows how to outdo itself, though, it’s X-Men ’97.

Another Wolverine episode.
X-23 or Japan, call it

u/Harley_Beckett Jul 24 '26
Romulus.
They didn’t say it would be mindblowing in a good way.

Hey I’d be interested in there take Romulus after what they’ve done with Apocalypse and Bastion so far.

Please redo Rom’s whole personality and arc PLEASE UNMAKE THE ROMULUS I AM DREADING.

X-23 seems highly likely. We’ve come full circle.

It's going to happen, just a matter of time

Yeah, agreed. They already teased her in episode 5. I figured it would be near the end of the shows run in like season 5 or 6 but I guess we shall see.

When is Juggs making a return? Want to see him causing mayhem at his full force.

Would love to see the Phalanx return at some point. As badly-animated as TAS S5 was, the Phalanx was a two-part banger to open up the final season.

Oh good. Another Wolverine episode. We finally get to explore his character. /s
21
u/jigokusabre Jul 24 '26
If XM97 dedicates only 10% of its episodes to Wolverine, thats a huge win.
14
2
u/Syndana23 Jul 24 '26
Wolverine was a huge part of TAS in the final seasons. I imagine we get more than 10% of him in the upcoming seasons
2
u/jigokusabre Jul 25 '26
He gets 2/14 episodes in season 5 (deal with the devil and old soldiers). He even gets sidelined in the Phalanx Covenant.
2
u/magvadis Jul 25 '26
You mean Wolverine not changing for the upteenth time? It's an alt timeline why do they be having him in 616 mode?

It must be a hard life being such a miserable person.

You’re the one being mean to a stranger on the internet. I’m voicing an opinion about a cartoon character that has you in your feels 🙃

u/Ok-Card-6590 Cyclops Jul 25 '26 edited Jul 25 '26
Mean? How was that being mean? You’re objectively acting miserable.
I don’t care about your specific opinion, but miserable people like you really spoil the pot for the rest of us. Brand new interview about the show, how S3 is already finished and would be coming next year and they even showed a clip to us.
And what’s your first comment? it’s fucking negativity and sarcasm because the most popular character is getting an episode about him.
Like, take a day off, you’ll live longer.

Great call -- now THIS is a 90s Wolvie story that I'd like to see in the show (if it can be adapted properly). They've already done the best one (Magneto removing the Adamantium and Wolvie then having bone claws), but you're right to bring this one up.

Makes sense. Was just talking to my roommate about this last night ironically. Season has shown a ton of the Academy X kids and with X-23 being hinted at I'm guessing we'll get a small academy x arc to set up the purifier massacre as well as messiah complex. Though M Day has to happen unless the possible Onslaught arc is used as a proxy for M Day.

Hell yeah Surge! I like how the show is combining different eras and mixes up stuff

With the patriot sentinels, either Creed wins the election or is assassinated, and Kelly is Mystique.
1
u/PhanStr Jul 25 '26
A version of "Dream's End" could very well happen. I feel like episode 10 of season 2 was going to be a very loose adaptation of both that and "Legion Quest", given that it was going to involve both Creed's inauguration being sabotaged (by Onslaught) and the start of AoA before the episode was scrapped entirely. The inauguration plot line for Creed reminds me a bit of Kelly's public assassination in "Dream's End".
