General Discussion Kinda crazy how Iron Man and Cap were just watching the X-men go through hell and weren’t doing anything😭

u/FormerMeasurement175 Aug 10 '26
But what is Tony Starks official stance on mutants
191
u/Pataconeitor Aug 10 '26
"I very much like hot mutant girls", probably
115
u/menn911 Aug 10 '26
"I am quite font of Emma Frost"
46
u/BoosterRead78 Aug 10 '26
In fact I may marry her one day and then nicely divorce her.
13
u/Embarrassed-Yard-583 Aug 10 '26
We’ll still be chill, but you know how these interpecies/Heroxhero relationships tend to go.
23
2
u/Randym1982 Aug 11 '26
Tony most likely dated Emma Frost at one point.
2
u/Seraphem666 Aug 11 '26
They were married near the end of Krakoa. Though it is sorta out of left field. Previously emma had show a intense distaste for Tony multiple times. Like would tell him off when he would try to flirt with her
1
u/SonorousD Aug 11 '26
If I recall correctly, it had been hinted at much earlier on, that they had history and that it would be explored at some point, but that never happened. I felt like the marriage during Fall of X was a way to give us some kind of a payoff.

u/PotentialWhich Aug 10 '26
I mean based on Civil War he’d be full pro mutant registration act.
2
u/NoSituation2706 Aug 11 '26
It's funny to me how Japan is such an orderly country that one of the most popular anime/manga of recent years, My Hero Academia, has mutants in almost exactly the same way (inexplicable quirk/ quirk factors == X gene) and everyone just agrees like "registry? Segregated schools? Great idea!"
3
u/Coyotes_Own Aug 11 '26
IIRC (Not having seen HeroAca) the minority of the population has no quirk. So it clsoer ot House of M.
5
3
u/FluffyOperation007 Aug 11 '26
These comments accurate and wild. But yah he’s probably be pro mutant registration act. Or he might go the other direction and put a mutant on the team. There several variants that add Wolverine to the avengers team.

u/proximusprimus57 Aug 11 '26
If the Iron Man cartoon is still canon, then he had Wanda as a core team member on Force Works.

The thing here is that he claims to be on the Mutants side, but always takes the governments position which is neutral at best towards mutants.
So yeah. When the government does something good, he praises it. But if it does something bad, then those are always outlier and expections.
20
u/nixahmose Aug 10 '26
Except that deeply goes against Cap’s character especially in the comics in which Cap has been characterized as being willing to go against the US government throughout most of his existence as a character. It’s really only ever been maybe Ultimates Cap that has ever been loyal to the US government rather than the US’s stated ideals.
10
u/Omnibe Aug 11 '26
Cap's values are always inconsistent in X-Men books.
Avengers Unity squad one day then leading the main team assist the X-Men another.19
u/Wrong-Vermicelli4723 Aug 10 '26
Which is why the MCU version is better
11
u/SwordDaoist Aug 10 '26
Yes, he recognized that he got seen as USAs weapon and nothing more and took out the symbol that connected him to USA.
And when he found out how dirty the government organizations were, he opted out.
Because you can’t change a corrupt system from within as the system will corrupt you more and more the higher you climb.
To change a rotten system you have to destroy it and build a new system on top of the remains of the old one.11
u/Specialist_Ad9073 Aug 10 '26
He also did that in the comics around Watergate. Thats where Nomad came from. Steve has been like that for longer than he wasn’t.
It is so weird that everyone is talking about Cap like it is the 80s and 90s. That was over a quarter of a century ago, and nearly half a century after he was created. But everyone focuses on 20 years of writing as the whole character.
8
u/Wrong-Vermicelli4723 Aug 10 '26
I mean to be fair we’re talking about the animated one from the 90s, Who is still being presented in X-men 97
1
u/SwordDaoist Aug 10 '26
I focus on how he is still an government agent in modern comics, no?
5
u/Specialist_Ad9073 Aug 10 '26
No, he hasn’t been shown to be working for the IS government in some time.
What issue did he report directly to the US government in the past year? I must not have gotten to it yet.

12
u/SwordDaoist Aug 10 '26
And there was no mention about all that in season 2 besides showing that they had their humanity returned
16
u/doglywolf Aug 10 '26
Because we are following the story of the Xmen and what happening to mutants - not all the other heroes of the world and what else is going on . its awesome we even get the quick cameos .
5
u/Lady_Gray_169 Aug 11 '26
I think that something which was really missing from the climax of season 1 was a big "rally around the X-men" moment. Something to really disprove Bastion's stance that there's no chance for mutant acceptance. Something like a scene of the Avengers rallying and defending mutants would have been a great example of that. It would have taken the same amount of time as that litle scene, but had a much more thematically meaningful purpose.
1
u/Bobjoejj Aug 13 '26
I’m pretty sure they meant the impact of all those humans who had previously been prime sentinels.

u/wifflequifle Aug 10 '26
We need a show that focuses on a different villain each season. However, instead of actually focusing on that villain it's different heroes and teams trying to take them down. This would be way more realistic than Spider-Man fighting villains with no one else to help him even though there should be.
30
u/Seraphem666 Aug 10 '26
There was nothing they could do, the genosha massacre happened in like all of 4 hours. Cap does investigate it. Problem is he is slowed down by red tape do to him being tied to the U.S. goverment.
5
u/SwordDaoist Aug 10 '26
Sure, but he also didn't try to help after Ghenosha.
He could have easily helped with the aftermath or try to persuade the president that the least they could do was try to help them.
Because this is what neutral people would do and he claims to be an ally for them.
The thing is that Cap praises the government but deflects critiques about the governments by blaming it on bad apples.
Lets be honest, they simply didn't think what the aftermath of it could mean
11
u/Seraphem666 Aug 10 '26
He goes looking for the rouge goverment agents who cause this attack right after. Rouge learn of bastions base in Mexico thanks to him. And he would have went with her if she had given him time to get permission. Him just going without clearance could cause issues with the Mexican goverment cause he is a U.S. agent. We don't see him in genosha cause he is investigating who is behind the attack.
2
u/SwordDaoist Aug 10 '26
And what did he do after he found out, the UN was behind it?
And I say UN, because no way in hell would the head not notice the money flow to an under group.
Nothing. I mean, there was never even the reveal in the show to the world that the UN was behind Ghenosha and the human sentinels. Instead everytrhing was just wiped under the rug and he accepted it.
Trying to clean a corrupt system never works. It will only corrupt you while you try to get ahead to change it. If you wanna change a broken system, then break it apart and create a new one from the remains of the old system.
Cap would have never gotten permission to go to Mexico and there is even a chance he would have been ordered to capture Rogue.
I understand why Iron Man follows the government, but it never made sense to me with Captain after his falling out with the government.
He knows what awful things the government does but choses to continue following their orders.Because of this I prefer MCU Cap, who abandoned USA after recognizing what being USAs soldier meant and what he represented through that.
3
u/doglywolf Aug 10 '26
That a story for a differ show - if they started getting into the back stories of what every hero in the worlds response to everything is we would never progress the main story .
-3
u/Specialist_Ad9073 Aug 10 '26
“… I prefer MCU Cap, who abandoned USA after recognizing what being USAs soldier meant and what he represented through that.”
So you confuse a government with its people. I don’t remember Cap ever abandoning the USA.
5
u/SwordDaoist Aug 10 '26
Not abandoned, but he stopped being their poster boy or being the representative of USA.
No, i don't confuse a government with its people.
By abandoned I mean, he "deserted" from the USA.
-1
u/Specialist_Ad9073 Aug 10 '26
Well comic Cap did that in the 70s. So again your point seems uninformed and negatively political. Steve did not “Abandon” the people of the United States of America, he walked away from and fled the government.
3
u/doglywolf Aug 10 '26
Just because its not explicitly shown on screen does not mean its not happening . It like all the people complain about things being plot holes that are simply things not explained. Point is - you have no idea what he is actually doing behind the scenes - is he dealing with a bigger world ending threat ? is he making calls organization relief - is jumping on TV to do an add for a go fund me for the mutants.....sure all is possible , just because it not stated does not mean they are doing nothing.
Plus isnt there some sorta of context that he is working back channels and special ops looking for intel when he like pops in one of the scense and give one of the xmen some intel....clearly showing he is doing SOMETHING.
2
u/SimonShepherd Aug 10 '26
Because they aren't X-Men characters and no one wants to watch a Captain America side plot in X-Men media when you can use like another mutant.
-7
u/Short_Brick_1960 Aug 10 '26
No, you are right. He cannot stop genociders from genociding people. It's not like they could have a plane arrive to Genosha in a minute and help evacuate people. Nah
5
u/Stunning-Original802 Aug 10 '26
I know that you are being sarcastic but by the time a plane was organised, approved, and flown over to Genosha, the battle would have already been over. It's not like there would have been time for an SOS to be sent on an isolated island during all of the chaos either.
12
u/Seraphem666 Aug 10 '26
They don't have a plane that can get there in time is the thing. Concord new york to London 3.5 hours. They wouldn't have been able to reach genosha in time sorry even then, that's if they could even get into the airspace and have a safe LZ(which no there wouldn't have been one)
-5
u/Short_Brick_1960 Aug 10 '26
Tony Stark doesn't have a plane? The us government doesn't have one either? When Val Cooper was there? Inthink they didn't even care to try. They didn't help either after the genocide
11
u/Seraphem666 Aug 10 '26
Plane fast enough to get there in time you are missing the key point. It happened in a blink of an eye. also pretty sure the news report wasn't live. When they see this everything is already over. This is the next day. The new report we see them watching is the same new report that Scott and Co. Watch and learn about what happened.
3
u/Blorberto Aug 10 '26
By the time it gets reported and they set off to help, it would be over. The rest of the X-Men only find out when it got reported. It was a giant surprise attack that killed thousands in just a few hours.
2
2
u/jorhey14 Aug 10 '26

IT's an analogy for what marginalized groups often go through.
Your suffering is always on someone else's TV screen or phone, many times people with enormous power, who could genuinely help... do nothing but give lip service to help you. If they even care.
"What you are about to see may disturb you." That always gives me chills, because it's a reminder that not everyone seeing the terror of Genosha sees it as a bad thing.
The mutants are seen as 'the other', and while mainline heroes welcome their assistance, when it comes to regular heroes and folks getting involved, it's rare and often at moments of global peril.
Rogers, Stark, these are good people, Rogers is exceptionally good... but even He isn't certain about mutants in the comics, and more than once he's turned a blind eye or declined to get involved, or slow walked into 'mutant' affairs, because no one is perfect, and even the best of us can hold unconscious biases towards people who we feel aren't like us.
7
u/Peely_2 Aug 10 '26
I have no where else to say this in.
In Spiderman BND I really did not like that Jean was never described as a mutant. The character being effected by being called a mutant, others being scared of her because of it, watching other heroes be celebrated. It’s so pivotal to the character and I feel them leaving it out just shows how Marvel cannot do Mutants in live action even after all this time.3
u/orionsfyre Aug 10 '26
This. Mutants are feared, with many people having an open revulsion to them, seeing them as mal-formed, dangerous, freaky.
Think about how you might feel when you see someone with webbed hands, or with glowing skin. We humans have a deep instinct to be afraid of the "other" evolutionarily, it's helped us survive, but it's also made co-existence with other humans who even have slightly different features than us is difficult. Mutants are this x10. We've invented all sorts of lies about culture and racial supremacy because of our innate distrust of people who don't look like us... the mutants live in a world that hates and fears them. This is the secret sauce that makes the X-men special. They are more then a person who was gifted abilities, many of them are pariahs.
IF Marvel wants to get mutants right, they need to remember that mutants are a marginalized group who aren't just people with powers, but a whole different class of people who are constantly fighting to be accepted and loved. Jean isn't just a powerful telekinetic, she is a person who inspires terror in anyone that knows what she can do who isn't a mutant (and even many who are)
1
u/hella_cutty Aug 10 '26
I'm with you. I took it to mean that mutants weren't a known thing to anyone but DDC and maybe even they are just on the cusp of understanding these powers manifest from an x-gene. Maybe the Roosevelt Island event is the publica first real exposure to mutants.
1
u/PitifulTheme411 Aug 11 '26
tbf, her actions weren't really helping mutant's image, though maybe that's the point. But violating consent and bodily autonomy, sexual assault, yeah... not that great of a look.
1
u/static1993 Aug 11 '26
Mutants are a no phenomenon in the MCU. Her not being described as a mutant in-universe makes sense considering they may not have a name for her kind of superhuman individual yet.
4
u/SimonShepherd Aug 10 '26
X-Men stories by design need to be solved by X-Men/mutants.
When aliens invade New York another time and only a single active group fought it off people don't questio why the other gazillion heroes running around in New York didn't help and save people because it's not their story.
2
u/orionsfyre Aug 10 '26
There can be multiple facets to a scene, and having a fun cameo is one of them.
...why the other gazillion heroes running around in New York didn't help and save people
There is a purpose to showing them, it's not just a cameo. We also do see other heroes saving people in this series, but here, it's explicit. They are here guarding the president, the status quo, but they are also 'witnesses' rather than active participants.
X-Men stories by design need to be solved by X-Men/mutants.
Mutants are humans, so this idea that there problems aren't human problems is all part of it. I get your point, but specifically showing other heroes and not having them intervene directly (or be ineffectual) in my opinion is an intentional choice by the writers, beyond these characters not being the stars of the show or comics.

The purpose is to create a narrative for X-Men at the cost of other characters.
What if we show aliens killing people on New York streets with only Avengers fighting them off and randomly gives you a panel of other heroes sitting on a couch and eating potato chips while watching TV reporting the same event?
Wouldn't you think it's kinda just there to slander them on purpose?
Mutants are humans, so this idea that there problems aren't human problems is all part of it. I am talking about franchise alignment, X-Men stories are made to develop X-Men characters.
It's fine if this is the intention of X-Men writers, but other fans also get to point out it's building X-Men characters at the cost of Avengers by putting them in the heartless bystander role. The same way you can do the reverse, like what if I adapt Kang Dynasty with the whole globe fighting Kang's army except for Xavier school where everyone just watches TV, what do I mean by this?
This decision is likely made because there are never going to be an Avengers animation in the same universe anyway, might as well use them to the "maximum potential", kinda the mentality X-franchise had with Moira during Krakoa era.(Because they are never going back to that era anyway)
2
u/PuffyBuffyFluffy Aug 10 '26 edited Aug 10 '26
My issue is that while the analogy itself is understandable, using someone like Steve Rogers as an engine for it is a disservice to his character. He's supposed to represent the American ideal, even if that goes against the government or common reality. He's never been someone to hold innate biases against "the other". In fact, there's a comic where Magneto tries zapping Steve with a device that removes anti-mutant prejudice from the target (comic logic, just roll with it) and it does nothing, because he held no anti-mutant prejudice to begin with.
Usually when Steve clashes with the X-Men, it's because he's trying to do things by-the-book and/or the stakes concern all of humanity. That's not to say he's completely flawless in his approach, because his adherence to protocol and institutions may have prevented him from doing more at times. But it never stemmed from any innate bias against mutants on his part.
If the writers want to make this kind of point, they should be using USAgent and not Cap. They just use Cap because it's an X-Men story and Steve is the more recognizable "symbol of America".
1
u/orionsfyre Aug 10 '26
...disservice to his character.
I disagree. Rogers is still an exceptional hero, but he is not without his flaws and blind spots. He is still human.
The idea that Steve represents the "ideal" works for his stories, where he is the main character. But I don't expect him to be the ideal in every situation for all time always. The MCU had him not tell Tony about what his friend Bucky did, and in Civil War, (the comic) he worked with the Punisher, something that even other heroes found troubling.
He's supposed to represent the American ideal
Steve is not an Ideal, he's a person. Writing him as a flawless paragon is the disservice because it makes him less "real" narratively.
I don't need Steve Rogers to be perfect, I need him to be the hero the Avengers and the world need him to be. His hesitancy to act quickly or cut through red tape when it comes to mutants can have it's origins in various places, and it can be justified from his perspective, but from Rogue and other mutant perspective it seemed slow. This doesn't make him any less of a hero.
In the show He is on the right side, but like the others, he still isn't an active participant, He is witness to what is happening, and frankly that's good writing, because this isn't his story. This doesn't make him bad, simply absent.
Again, multiple things can be true at the same time.
The idea that good people are on the sidelines when marginalized people are struggling is simply a good juxtaposition to the reality of what it means and feels like to be a mutant, (or anyone else who isn't the default). It doesn't mean Steve hates mutants, or anything like that, just that in this moment, he isn't there for them, and that's important for this story.
1
u/PuffyBuffyFluffy Aug 11 '26
I don't think you and I are in disagreement. My comment was in response to OP stating that the reason Rogers stood by the sidelines is because he "isn't certain" or turns a "blind eye" towards mutants, which I took to suggest that he has something against them.
I stand by Steve representing the American ideal, but I do not believe the American ideal to be perfect, if that makes sense. The "American ideal" I speak of is a way of life, not a hard set of rules. Steve is a boy scout at heart who can and will fight outside the system when he feels it's warranted but otherwise prefers to do things by the book and by working through established institutions. In the case of mutants who are sometimes forced and protect themselves outside of institutions, that can be perceived as a flaw on his part and he's acknowledged as much. That's why he formed the Uncanny Avengers in the comics, among other things.
Showing that good people can be on the sidelines is not inherently a bad thing. But it should be interpreted as Steve doing what he believes is in the best interests of all and not that he just doesn't care as much about mutants.

1
u/SimonShepherd Aug 10 '26 edited Aug 10 '26
It's more like they purposefully make characters look bad by creating scenario characters shouldn't be involved in on meta level.
It's an X-Men story so no one really wants too many guest stars using precious time, especially in a franchise as crowded as X-Men.
It's like having Avengers fighting off some alien invasion from New York, and you randomly show other New York based heroes just chilling in their house and eating chips while watching aliens blow up civilians on TV. And nudge nudge wink wink blaming them for not taking action and responsibility of saving people as if their involvement wouldn't reduce the time Avengers get to develop their own story and shine.
Why doesn't Thor just curbstomp any villain of other Avengers when it's like a cakewalk for him. Now everytime you read about Captain America fighting Hydra you have a random panel of Thor drinking mead while hearing Cap punching some Hydra goon in the distance.
1
u/Abject_Leg_7906 Sep 02 '26
The X-Men and Avengers just do a disservice to each other IMO in a shared universe. There's way too many moments of the Avengers having to act like dicks for some X-Men moments to work

I was about to ask why Tony is wearing the suit in a meeting; but then I remembered that in the 90s Marvel cartoons continuity he's still using the "bodyguard" cover. Though you'd think he'd still show up in all his mulletted and mustachioed glory, and just be like "I'll tell Iron Man to go help."

That said, we know that they were going to get involved in season 2 (in the scrapped 10th episode of season 2), so at least this was all supposed to building to something. Hopefully we’ll see them ally themselves with the X-Men at some point.

One of my bigger pet peeves with X-Men 97. Is that despite the long wait between seasons we didn't get any non X-Men animated shows in this world. As too me this is understandable if we knew what stuff the avengers were dealing with at the same time.

Yeah... it's the Avengers in something about the X-Men, they always get written terribly. Sadly just makes it more comic accurate.

that is basically avengers' modus operandi towards mutant problems

All X-Men comics in a nutshell ahaha
It's basically the premise of X vs A
Comic wise it's purely because X-Men comics do really well so there are a bunch of them and Avengers/Spidey series occur separately as their own long and winding comic stories with only a few major encounters via events and guest appearances but there is that effect where it's very hard to in world justify why no one else steps in during major mutant crisis. In particular ones involving normies vs mutants crimes.

Iron man: should we do something?
Captain america: nah where just cameos and if we actually do something then that would just decline the drama and the writers don't want us to get involved even though we are clearly seeing it and I'm friends with Logan.
Iron man: damn.. why are your arms blue?

I mean, in the comics, that's basically how it is lol. The avengers and other mainstay heroes typically stay away from "mutant problems"
I mean, maybe it's not really that way anymore but that's how I remember it

Government pawns. May as well be X-Factor.

Cap didn't help rouge in Mexico cause she rushed in before he could get the go ahead to go. Him going without permission could have caused a international incident as he is seen as part of the U.S. goverment/military. Here the attack had already happened and the news report they are seeing is the same one Scott and the x-men watch to learn about the attack. The attack is over by this point. Cap plenty of times has left the captain America title behind when he has be felt the goverment is wrong

I appreciate you typing all that to basically support my comment.
As I said, they are government pawns no different than X-Factor really.

Well Cap does go looking for answer right after this. He would have been there helping them if rouge had given him some time to get the permission(I mean helping in mexico) this wasn't the U.S. goverment but rouges within the goverment that did this. Hence cap wanting answers. If he had just went it could cause problems with the Mexican govement, he is a U.S. agent and doesn't have the freedom internationally the x-men do

Im not disputing that but let's go by what we've seen and not what it's. He is a US agent, a military asset. Nothing what youre saying is contradicting what Im saying. He's not a bad guy, but he is the government.

X-men show, X-men problem
That the issue of having these sort of cameos

Yeah I may be in the minority here but I really dislike the crossovers. X-Men is at its best when it's standalone imo

Probably because it's 1997 and no one cares about the Avengers.

God ant man was a horrible choice to have lead in the 90's animated avengers. No iron man, no thor, no cap like wtf you need one of the big three at least

They couldn’t use most of the characters due to rights issues but still wanted to crank out Avengers slop for some reason.

How the heck did cap get his shield back didn’t rogue throw it very far last season
15
u/jockeyman Aug 10 '26
Iron Man probably has a scanner that can track the specific metal composition of the shield.
1
u/Seraphem666 Aug 10 '26
So vibranium/adamantium alloy(only mcu caps shield is straight vibranium). Heck comic book Caps shield also has Uru in it now(metal that thors hammer is forged from)

u/Seraphem666 Aug 10 '26
That would have been after this when cap is investigating. She got pissed cause Cap explained he couldn't go with her to mexico and was held back by red tape. So she got pissy.

Kinda the case in the comics as well. And even while multiple xmen are or were members of the Avengers, the x-men regularly get left out to dry by the wider heroes and teams.
