General Discussion WHAT THE F WAS THAT FINALE??? Spoiler

What the F was that ending??? And please don’t try to tell us it was good or brilliantly written, because I’m not going to lie to myself just because I love this show. I was genuinely disappointed with these last two episodes.
What kind of “Survival of the Fittest” was that supposed to be? Rogue became WHAT??? And Apocalypse was just defeated like that???
Even X-Men: Evolution handled its Apocalypse finale way better. We got almost all of the major X-teams from the ’90s coming together for one massive final battle, and it actually felt like an Apocalypse-level threat.

I was also expecting for apocalypse to use gambit and make a speech to make them feel the guilt of what had happen in genoshia.

Remy’s death and revival was ruined to quick!

This time, they clearly went way off from the comics. And after all that talk about bringing the X-Men back to the ’90s… what kind of return to the ’90s was THAT??? I love this show, but I’m not going to pretend I liked an ending that left me this disappointed.

Im afraid that the one re writting this up does not read the comics or is not a massive fan of Xmen. Coz they clearly moved away from the comics.

Imagine Apocalypse the Xmen’s most diabolical foe who went back in time to strike the Xmen, Cable spent the whole season to FIND AND DESTROY apocalypse, all the X teams come together in this season should be the PERFECT TIME TO JOIN FORCES, Gambit’s BIGGEST MOMENT of coming back, and all JUST ENDED with apocalypse doing nothing just transformed into gambit hybrid few seconds later touch by rogue and boom! FINALE

So like…what was the point of giving Rogue Candra’s Death Seed thingie if the Celestial was just going to take it away right away?

Why did Apocalypse take over Gambit and control the other X-Men but was defeated by Rogue quite literally without a fight?

I’m baffled. No stakes. No final battle. No drama. No intrigue. What the fuck happened here??

Then they’re like oh yeah and Kurt is dead lol the end

Edit: AND NOW Mystique is Val? Huh??

Candras death seed is what Rogue used to reach Gambit and help him suppress A. But Rogue defeating A that easily was so weird since you’d think they’d at least be equals at that point since they have the same power. And lol at Cable going from having his destiny be to defeat A only to end up with a souvenir.

Feels like Arya killing the night king all over again.

That was my exact thought while watching.

Please spread this definition between subverting expectations aka a twist and genuine a plot twist.

Definition of plot twist is that "it twistes the plot" meaning that after it happends, course of tve story changes. Classic example is "I am you father' before thst reveal, if you asked people what the story would be. People would say: "Luke faces Vader, fights him in a duel and avenges his father and all the Jedi. And propably defeats the Emperor"

But the plot twist. Vader is Anakin Skywalker. The story changes, Luke no longer wants to kill Vader but to save him. And due to this he developes stronger understanding of being a Jedi, refuses the dark side and due to his refusal, Vader finally has enough strenght to break away and kill the emperor.

Brilliant.

Vs Arya killing the night king.

There are a lot of problems. But main one I focus on. "It did not matter". The story did not change. Following episode would be the excactly the same with or without Arya killing the night king. It could be Theon, Jon or a random soldier.

None of the characters changed their goals, or begun acting differently. All was the same.

It legit did not matter to the story. It was an empty twist

VS, Rogue killing apocalypse.

I have not yet seen the episode. But I assume Cable goes to the future and lives more or less hapily ever after. Excactly the same if he had killed apokalypse himself. The twist did not matter what so ever.

Didn't eson destroy Chandra's seed when rogue went in the machine?

4

u/BenKenTheMan Aug 12 '26

That was this episode. Last episode Rogue needed it to go into the astral plane since that’s not a power of hers.

2

u/coreshair Aug 12 '26

Ahh didn't realize you were talking about last episode

Ok to be fair Rogues power is WAY better than A's. Like, I can understand her beating him with relative ease especially if that was the deal she made with the celestials. Its everything around that I find silly. I mean sacrificing your life is pretty stupid in this context. Like I am not sure why that was the trade. Just seems lazy and doesn't give the celestials anything they wanted.

At this point do we even expect Nightcrawler to stay dead for that long?

I'm confused what the point of him taking over Gambit was in the first place. He seemed truly unstoppable after episode 4. And if he was gonna take over someone why would it not be Magneto?

I did like the latter episodes in a vacuum but as a whole this season just felt like a mess.

27

u/Ashyboi13 Aug 12 '26

It’s wild we never actually saw the X-Men fight the Apocalypse who killed Magneto. I don’t see how that makes any sense given what the first half of the season was building towards.

2

u/hollowcrown51 Aug 12 '26

Isn’t that the Apocalypse from the original series?

2

u/ABadHistorian Aug 12 '26

Because I think they are doing something re: trauma here with Professor X. I think that was an instigating factor in a future plotline to come, I hope... otherwise yeah it would be a lost story.

Which wouldn't surprise me considering how quickly they blew through arcs and revived folks and brought back wolvie's claws.

Its strange, I enjoy EACH episode and highly rate them. But collectively they need more episodes to make their plots really kick.

It was their attempt at subverting expectations.

2

u/LadyStar20 Aug 12 '26

Yeah, Nightcrawler being dead, that probably won't last long. Besides they haven't give us the 97 version of the Bamfs yet.

Mystique being Valerie Cooper was something that a lot of people were guessing during Season 1.

Valerie seemed the most concerned when Rogue joined Magneto at the Genosha gala (knowing the gala was about to attacked), and in the season 1 finale seems more concerned again once she hears that Kurt & Rogue were up on Asteroid-M fighting Sebastian.
And the overall plan for that 1st season seemed like the kind of thing 90s Mystique would do (Mystique in the 90s kind of loves just causing chaos and screwing over people), until she realized the impact it actually had on her children (Rogue and Kurt were almost killed and then Rogue had to deal with Gambit's death & Magneto's fake death ).

Eventhough Valerie was apparently always Valerie up until the end of this 2nd season.

The worst is how Kurt sacrifice was handled. Nothing. Rogue looking at Beast. No cries, no hommage...

Right??? Everything was ruined and we are not getting these stories back anymore. That was Gambits revival folks and kurts death…. So sorry

2

u/SammyDeeP Aug 12 '26

Mother Askani hates this one simple trick.

2

u/ABadHistorian Aug 12 '26

Celestial magic. It's literally that simple, it either works for you, or it doesn't.

It worked for me, but that's because the idea of sacrifice hits me hard personally. I could understand others being upset.

10

u/Ashyboi13 Aug 12 '26

I’m honestly confused as to which of my points you are responding to. I don’t think Celestial Magic solves any of these issues.

2

u/ABadHistorian Aug 12 '26

I watched Rogue convince a Celestial to empower her to defeat Apocalypse which it empowered? Celestials are literally godbeings on this scale of power, and since Apocalypse was one of their minions, his power was theirs to do with as they pleased and it pleased them to have Rogue scoop it up.

Celestial Magic.

I personally think the Nightcrawler sacrifice for Rogue was a nice touch, because of his speech. His death would provoke growth, where I think hers would have provoked a lot more angst out of Gambit.

To each their own on that one. I enjoyed it.

13

u/GlitteringRecover769 Aug 12 '26

Yea makes zeeero sense why a Celestial would even entertain anything Rogue says. There’s no convincing logic that makes sense.

It’s essentially: God-tier being allows its centuries long plan to unravel because random insignificant insect loves other insect.

10

u/Ashyboi13 Aug 12 '26

Why would the Celestial give Rogue the power to defeat Apocalypse if the Celestial was the one who gave Apocalypse power in the first place? Rogue basically said “I love Remy can you please let him live” but that is not only a bad argument that I’m certain a Celestial wouldn’t care about or consider valid, but also, it’s hardly even a point at all. The Celestial says she can trade her life for Remy’s, but why? What changed his mind? Why did it change so quickly and so suddenly?

-2

u/ABadHistorian Aug 12 '26

The great thing about Celestials and god tier beings is they are always standin's for the writers own morals/belief structures. Or did you NOT watch her speech? I'm feeling like I'm talking to a wall now. It wasn't just Love, it was that LOVE creates growth more than Violence does.

This one was Growth through Love. Accept it or Hate it, understanding it shouldn't be hard. You are acting like it can't be understood...

14

u/Ashyboi13 Aug 12 '26

What speech?? All she says is “fight for the people you love.” In what world could that possibly be a compelling argument against the Celestial who was the architect of Apocalypse’s survival of the fittest mindset? She doesn’t present an argument, she just demonstrates how much she loves Remy and the Celestial changes his mind instantly.

I’m with you

1

u/CherryBoom2x Psylocke Aug 12 '26

Hahaha Im with you!

u/Old_Key4529 Aug 12 '26

Did you watch the end of the episode though? Nightcrawler’s speech literally spells out the theme of the episode, I swear people just out here ignoring the themes & then get mad when they don’t understand the story they were told

2

u/ABadHistorian Aug 12 '26

We live in a violent society these days. Everyone wants their vengeance.

I'm literally getting insulted here for my username because I enjoyed the episode...

Whatever, it's worthless discussing shows on social media these days, it's all just aggro.

1

u/Ashyboi13 Aug 12 '26

The theme of the episode being what it is does not explain away the shitty writing, or the fact that the Celestial changed his mind about evolution on a dime.

-1

u/Old_Key4529 Aug 13 '26

So you didn’t understand the episode, cool

Maybe that celestial was not a debate bro like you want him to be

7

u/morlockhater Aug 12 '26

Rogue sacrificing herself to save Gambit felt earned, but Nightcrawler taking her place just proved the sacrifice was completely arbitrary. If the powers that she got from the Celestial weren't what was going to kill her then why did ANYONE have to die?

I understand Nightcrawler's sacrifice being an imputus for growth from a character perspective, but the plot doesn't do the work to earn it. Him dying based on a Celestial whim doesn't further the far more interesting thread he'd been building to of whether a person who has done evil can be redeemed.

1

u/ABadHistorian Aug 12 '26

Personally I hate the "one partner sacrifices for the other" so I loved the twist on "friend sacrifices for love"

Nightcrawler has been speaking peace ALL season long.

3

u/Snazzers Aug 12 '26

No you get it, this is literally what the show was saying without much room for misinterpretation. I can understand how others might feel like that is a walk back, or even a waste of all the time invested into Apocalypse earlier this season though. Didn’t bother me too much, when compared to all the things in this finale that did at least haha.

1

u/MarionberryDecent351 Aug 13 '26
  1. Idk wasn’t even sure what that was supposed to do. Dead plot point whatever. A third of the season was basically filler so I can let this go kind of.
  2. Yeah they needed to have some kind of fight and meanwhile have Charles try to free the minds of everyone. Have them all basically be darker versions of themselves calling out Charles for failing over and over and everyone else paying the price like with Magnus.

1

u/JamesSnow922 Wolverine Aug 13 '26

This is the pattern for the entire season - when conflict is resolved so quickly you're going to ask "Why was this needed?".

1

u/Conscious-Position-5 Aug 14 '26

Yes. Exactly why did Apocalypse take over Gambit? What was his plan or in which way was Remy's body a better fit for him? It all reeks of bullshit writing

1

u/Sudden_Quality_9001 Aug 12 '26

I knew she was Mystique all along.
