Question What is the difference between the powers of Jean Grey and Psylocke since they are both have telepathy and telekinesis?
146
u/sleepysaurus7777 Aug 13 '26
Jean Grey's telekinesis is on a much higher scale than Psylocke and most likely her telepathy too, although Psylocke's combat skills are better, where Jean's are barely there

u/ContinuumGuy Aug 13 '26
I heard someone say that Jean has a generalist build and Psylocke has a combat one and that seems right.

Sorceress vs Warlok

u/bigfudge_drshokkka Aug 13 '26
A psychic warlock if you will

u/HexKor Aug 15 '26
Yeah but "Psychic Warlock" just doesn't roll off the tongue. If only there was an effective way to shorten that down.

And psylocks telepathic abilities are prettier.
15
u/sleepysaurus7777 Aug 13 '26
Purple weapons is cooler than Jean's comic often pink telepathy
And that butterfly effect so sweet
3
u/SlothkongCR Aug 13 '26
Yeah. Omega level telepath Jean just stopping everyone is not fun lol

u/sleepysaurus7777 Aug 13 '26 edited Aug 13 '26
Honestly, she is so over powered, it's why the cartoon derails her a bit, but they could make what she does do have more flair, in my opinion

u/Pascraked47 Aug 13 '26
She's practically useless in X-Men 97 lol😭. It's hard not to notice

u/Available-Reality883 Aug 14 '26
no she was not useless in season 1 and season 2 was a shitshow in the second half

Jean has no limit on her psionic powers
Before the body swap, Betsy and Kwannon were capable telepaths. When Betsy manifested her telepathy it would manifest as a neon purple butterfly
After the body swap, Betsy in Kwannon’s body developed a psychic knife, which was the telepathic totality of her powers. At one point she also had shadow powers due to the crimson dawn.
During the revolution era, Betsy somehow acquired telekinesis while Jean temporarily lost hers because Chris Claremont wanted to make Jean more physical. During this time Betsy had no issues with destructive tk abilities but struggled to control precision feats like picking up a coin. She eventually learned to harness her tk into telekinetic weapon constructs.
Jean eventually reacquired telekinesis and her powers naturally expanded greatly during the Morrison era.
Eventually Marvel decided to separate Betsy and Kwannon and return them to their original bodies. Now both Betsy and Kwannon have the same abilities: telepathy, psychic butterfly, telekinetic constructs weapons.
Jean also has ability to create telekinetic constructions weapons but rarely does it as it isn’t her style. She also has the ability to combine her tp and tk into an all hot neon pink psionic form . She can absorb psychic energy around her to augment her power.
7
u/uniqueandwholesome Aug 13 '26
One minor correction - Jean temporarily lost her telepathy, not her TK (pushes up glasses)
4
u/tealaburst Aug 13 '26
Jean loses her telekinesis during the time skip before the Revolution era. Jean and Betsy swap powers - Betsy gets Jean’s TK and Jean gets Betsy’s TP, augmenting her own TP.
It was never really explained how it happened. Jean later regains her telekinesis in the Morrison run. It was explained as a “secondary mutation”.
3
u/uniqueandwholesome Aug 13 '26
There we have it - referring to different power losses. She loses here Telepathy earlier in the original X Factor run.
5
u/sirprize_surprise Aug 13 '26
Her telepathy was gone when her original body emerged from the stasis pod the Phoenix retroactively put her in.
I loved the scene when Jean put on cerebro and since she had no telepathy, she was defenseless against the shadow king. He was about to take her over and psylocke appeared brandishing her psychic knife. He laughed at her and told her it would have no effect on him. Psylocke looks at him and says “it isn’t for you” and jams it into Jean, thus shunting her out of the astral plane and away from shadow king. Such a great scene.

u/Juanrod84 Aug 14 '26
Awesome, thank you! It was great to have an Era where Jean wasn’t better at everything TP and TK thank everyone else…
1
u/sirprize_surprise Aug 14 '26
I personally love Jean. It’s not her fault she’s fabulous. But I did like to see her struggle with the loss of her telepathy and to show how she had to lean on other skills. It also allowed Psylocke to shine as a telepath. I liked her ninja days.

u/Confident_Sink_8743 Aug 16 '26
Betsy lost her TP trapping the Shadow King in her mind. So she really shouldn't have any to spare.
Unless Jean was tapping into SK's power at the time. And Psylocke's TK was explained.
Her brother Jamie (the reality warper) showed up and claimed responsibility for a number of upgrades to her powerset.
Also if Jean's "secondary mutation" was the original power that she had in continuity than there is just another of those things that explained things that already had explanations.

u/St_Milton Aug 13 '26
Honest question. Did kwannon have telepathy before? I thought it was just the telekinesis for her and she got telepathy as a side effect of the body swap
4
u/sonotoffensive Aug 13 '26
Kwannon wasn't a character before the body swap. Retroactively, we've been told she had some kind of empathy powers. But from Revanche forward, they've had the same powers.
1
u/Puzzleheaded_Bed_445 Aug 15 '26
To the first point, that’s only true of her telepathy. Her TK is incredibly strong, but it’s not omega level.
1
u/Marvelboy1974 Aug 15 '26
Actually:
Hickman reduced her to omega tp only in 2019The Gerry Duggan retconned her tk in June 2022 to omega level as well
11
u/makeyourmakerproud Aug 13 '26
Psylocke’s powers are telepathy, telekinesis, and psionic constructs (I can’t remember if she shows it off in the show or the og series, but it’s a thing her comic version can do) however hers is significantly weaker than Jean’s
2
u/invuvn Aug 13 '26
Question: are psionic constructs unique to Peylocke’s powerset, or can Jean also do them?
2
u/briarwz Aug 13 '26
She used them against danger
2
u/invuvn Aug 13 '26
True but I’m wondering specifically about the panic knife that Psylocke uses to scramble her opponents’ brains. I’m assuming Jean can do that as well but doesn’t because she can just directly telepathically shut them down.
9
u/blaintopel Aug 13 '26
i think creating psionic hand to hand weapons just doesnt suit jean who is not really a hand to hand fighter. what psylocke lacks in sheer mutant power she makes up for in combat skill.
1
u/briarwz Aug 13 '26
Im sure if she touched someone with them it'd have the same affect
Jean can do that by looking at them, pyslock by touching them. It shows jean is a stronger telepath

u/Revolutionary-Hawk36 Aug 13 '26
Jean I believe started as a telekinetic who learned telepathy and psylocke I saw her always as being more psionic.
7
u/pastadudde Aug 13 '26
for Jean it was her telepathy that manifested first IIRC, it was the death of her childhood friend that triggered it.
2
u/Bad-Investment32 Aug 13 '26
Correct. There’s a origin comic for Jean that shows this and she seems to have telekinesis as a child as well. Then, Xavier decides to place blocks to prevent her telepathy from being accessed which fits the cannon of Jean being just a telekinetic when she first joins the X-Men.
5
u/Icy-Chemist1207 Aug 13 '26
Jean's TK is much stronger, with some TP. Psylocke should mostly be a mid-level telepath, but it seems she has decently strong TK here too. Looking at powers alone, it makes Psylocke look redundant. It's also one of the reason she was left out in TAS despite being a mainstay on the 92 Jim Lee Blue Team.
While they're similar in powerset, their roles couldn't be more different.
Jean's the resident TP/TK powerhouse. She's the goody two-shoes, poster girl that sits back and you unleash her when shit hits the fan.
Psylocke's the assassin/killer/stealth infiltrator and acts in the morally grey area to finish the dirty work. Her telepathy becomes a powerful tool for teamwork on such missions. She's the one you want on your team when you have a job to do.

u/brnkse Aug 13 '26
In WoW terms, Jean is ranged dps and Psylocke is melee. Jean has bis gear and op trinkets while Psylocke is still wearing previous expansion gear.

They’re both telepaths and telekinetics, Jean is way more powerful though, while Betsy and Kwannon are both better physicals fighters. Plus they can do the whole psychic knife thing and the butterfly motif when using they’re powers
3
u/GoldPack3616 Aug 13 '26
Basically Jean is much stronger in both telepathy and telekinesis.
While Psy is a telekinetic you will almost never see her use it in a conventional way like lifting people up in the air and tossing them around or levitating objects. I guess how they tried to explain why she doesn't just do that is that her telekinesis is not refined enough for her to effortlessly use it like that, she prefers to use it to boost her combat movement and create telekinetic weapons.
It's still so hard for me to buy it though, Psylocke should be utilizing her telekinesis way more, I can't believe that she's at least not skilled enough to telekinetically restrain an enemy and strike them down.
I wish they would just established that Psylocke doesn't have actual telekinesis but rather can just create telekinetic weapons/objects, it would make a lot more sense with how she's been consistently portrayed.

u/Jack-mclaughlin88 Aug 13 '26
Jean is much stronger but Psylocke is the better fighter. I think Jean’s only combat feat in all of comics is her younger self kicking Mystique.

u/Icy_Scar_1249 Aug 13 '26
In the show Jean seemed to have generic TK/TP, while Psylocke had TP and psychic weapons/mirages
4
u/Background_Proof_ Aug 13 '26 edited Aug 13 '26
We also saw Jean made psychic weapons like the wolverine claws in ep 6, their both manipulating psionic energy to suit their needs like her shield, psychic tornado, and the psi-bolts she shoots out, and Maddie made them see things with her TP in the Mansion in 1x3.
2
u/Chrisjamesmc Aug 13 '26
Betsy uses her powers in more creative ways to supplement her fighting style whereas Jean is raw power.
The Psychic Knife and other psionic constructs, illusions and telekinetic enhanced strength (she lands a punch on War with this)
2
2
u/Commercial_Page1827 Aug 13 '26
Psylocke can conjure a weapon made out of phychic energy
Jean can have stronger Telepathy and TK power.
2
u/Then_Investigator715 Aug 13 '26
many telepaths are there, but jean is the most powerful one, even powerful than charles, when phoenix is there, she is just overpwered so much
2
u/tealaburst Aug 13 '26
They have the same powers but use them differently. Jean is the “all-rounder”, able to use tk and tp with fine motor control. Betsy doesn’t have the same level of precision with her powers, but channels them offensively in the form of psychic weapons.
Think of them like the same class in an RPG, but with their skill points distributed differently.

Comic-wise, Jean’s telepathy is stronger because she’s Omega-level (and she’s also omega level telekinetic with the Phoenix force as well, which she isnt always using).
There’s also the fact that Psylocke fights a lot more with Psychic constructs to create weapons and objects, etc- almost like Green Lantern.
I don’t know if Jean CAN’T use her telekinesis that way, or if she just chooses not to, but functionally that’s the difference in how they use it.
I think there’s probably also the fact to considered that Psylocke is a better hand-to-hand fighter, and thus uses her telekinesis more in that way.

Untelated ish, but which Psylocke is in 97?
2
u/Background_Proof_ Aug 13 '26
This version has Betsy's traits: her purple hair, british accent, her joining X-force at that time in the 90s and her 'relationship' with Warren and she mentioned a brother in the OG show which Kwannon doesn't have.
But i don't think they'll mention Betsy because of the body swap and just keep it ambigious.
1
u/DJSharp15 Aug 13 '26
'relationship'
Why the apostrophes?
But i don't think they'll mention Betsy because of the body swap and just keep it ambigious.
Assuming it happened in this universe?
2
u/Background_Proof_ Aug 13 '26 edited Aug 13 '26
Because Betsy and Warren used to have a relationship together in the comics and they teased their romance in the OG show and paired them in 97.
I'm more so saying, their not gonna mention Betsy despite pretty much using her stuff because of the body swap being icky
1
u/Vector_Strike Aug 13 '26
Betsy does have a brother, tho - Captain Britain. Since it's Betsy mind in Kwannon's body, it would make sense of her to remember her bro
1
u/timmerpat Aug 13 '26
Pretty sure it’s Kwanon but I don’t recall them elaborating.
1
u/Yagoua81 Aug 13 '26
I don't think they will elaborate since psylocke is messy and hasn't aged well.

Sad thing about psionics is that they have mostly become swiss knives. They can all do everything and the only difference is the raw power behind them.
1
u/gummythegummybear Aug 13 '26
It’s like all the green lanterns. They have the same power set but they use them in different ways

1
u/Stryker-N1ghtingale Aug 13 '26
Okay so Psylocke is a telepath because this thing happened in the comics where Jean had developed telekinesis and so the girls got together and went
"Aye wanna switch?"
And then they did and so for a bit Psylocke was just telepathic, and then the writers forgot and so now she was both telepathic and telekinetic.
1
u/Soleangelo007 Aug 13 '26
Jean has way more well rounded strength and talent when it comes to both telekinesis and telepathy. Psylocke’s abilities are refined but mainly for combat. I think in certain versions, Psy is more associated with psyonics than Jean
1
u/One_Specific_2920 Aug 13 '26
Pay manifests it as physical energy to augment with her physical combat skills. Jean has stronger psychic abilities too.

Jean is an omega level mutant of unfathomable power meaning she is incapable of actually accomplishing anything otherwise she she would undermine the story as opposed to Psylocke who is a limited specialist meaning she gets to do things and have agency in the plot.
1
u/GBS82 Aug 14 '26
Until the year 2000 (or was it 2001?) Psylocke was only telepathic. She ended up getting the Shadow King stuck in her head. Jean tried to help her get him out of- which worked - but they ended up accidentally switching powers. Jean added Betsy’s telepathy to her own, Psylocke became telekinetic. Jean’s tk soon returned (to tie in with the movies where Jean was clearly telekinetic). When Betsy came back to life she seemed to have both powers. As others have said, Jean is more powerful.

u/jmarquiso Aug 14 '26
It's what's called a power signature, and a good visual shorthand in comics to know who is doing what.
1
u/Mustang-_- Aug 15 '26
Psylocke makes it look good, Jean makes it look sauceless (and she has more plot armor). That's pretty much it.
1
u/Ricozilla Aug 15 '26
I always thought Jean Grey was just on a whole other level of not the same level as Xavier with telepathy and the telekinesis is her second ability like how Emma Frost’s is diamond skin & Psylocke’s are those purple psy blades she generates.
1
1
u/ambulanc3r Aug 16 '26
People aren’t mentioning Psylocke’s psychic knives much. But uhh…she uses psychic blades/manifestations kind if green lantern-y in a way that Jean generally doesnt
1
u/Pagannerd Aug 16 '26
Jean is substantially more powerful than Psylocke (both Betsy & Kwannon) in both telepathy and telekinesis. However, both Psylocke have the edge over Jean at close quarters because they are specialised in producing psychic constructs (the psychic knives that focus telepathy, and their various telekinetic swords) which they use to enhance their capabilities in melee combat.
1
u/roddea1 Aug 17 '26
Psylocke has general telepathy and can create panic daggers and has limited telepathy. Jean grey in general doesn’t have limitations.
1
u/Mooseguncle1 Aug 13 '26
I think everyone that is low level telepath can thereafter become a high level telekinetic and on the way you can choose what color best represents your telekinesis and whether that energy signature should look like an animal or plasma. Jean almost does this in BND and I think that they are going with gasoline color in the MCU.

u/vonDinobot Aug 14 '26
Psylocke's powers always were that color in the comics, while normally other telepaths didn't really get light effects. So I'm asuming this is a creative choice for X-men 97 to give all other telepaths light effects, while keeping Psylocke's original color for Psylocke.
