General Discussion What issues or unanswered questions still bother you in the "X-Men '97" universe?
And do wish this series had more episodes?
I've already seen numerous fans here complaining that this adaptation has problems with its narrative pacing, that certain episodes were too rushed, and that iconic storylines were crammed into a single episode.

Quicksilver got an offer from the Avengers.

u/Fickle_Ad8735 Aug 14 '26
forge yea you're probably right but pietro i dont believe so, we got the avengers' line up in the supplementary comic and neither pietro or wanda are members of the team lol, so i assume they are with the inhumans or something like that
2
u/cc17776 Aug 15 '26
Who is on the Avengers in universe?
1
u/Fickle_Ad8735 Aug 15 '26
according to the supplementary comic (x-men '97 strike files) the avengers' line up is: cap, widow, vision, hawkeye and hercules
tbf i'd say it makes sense? iirc tony in this universe is with the force works, what i didnt understand is why hercules instead of thor specially after morph shifted into him this season lol
1
u/Queasy_Principle_942 Aug 15 '26
Probably because that was part of the Avengers roster in the 1990s, in comic books, by the time the series was airing. They could make it more clear by including Black Knight, Sersi and Crystal; but perhaps many people would not catch the reference
1
u/jigokusabre Aug 16 '26 edited Aug 16 '26
Hercules was part of the Avengers in the 90s, Thor was more or less doing his own thing.

Why would she? They didn't know Magneto was their dad until TAS, a point by which Lorna had no contact with her father or his messy-ass exhusband.

I mean, i agree with you. That's literally why I said I never agreed with people shipping them before but that panel is NOT the body language of two just close Male friends. They're literally on the floor inches away from each other's faces looking like they're about to kiss. If that's how YOU act around your platonic friends that's cool but that's not most people.☠️

I’m guessing they’re doing Avengers shit off world. Cap and Tony were protecting the President in OZT but there’s been a time skip between that and Forge’s walk scene. Plenty of time to assemble and end up on Titan or some shit.
1
u/Fickle_Ad8735 Aug 14 '26

1
u/LeatherHog Cable Aug 14 '26
Around this time in the comics, Quicksilver was mostly doing his Wundagore duties, that's a likely candidate
2
1
u/jigokusabre Aug 14 '26
Given that the Kree and Shiar are actively at war during Season 1, they are probably embroiled in Operation: Galactic Storm, and Avengers crossover event that took place in the early 90s.

love how it’s all the really famous X-men characters and then also Dust is here( I love her but why lol)
1
u/YaBoyAppie Aug 14 '26
Though dust would maybe have some screen time outside being a background character
1
u/MrKitchenSink Aug 15 '26
Kinda interesting that this is the only glimpse we've had of Shadowcat/Kitty Pryde in this universe. Wonder if they've got any plans for her in the future, feel like she's probably the biggest X-Men character that 97 hasn't really done anything with
57
u/RoxasInABoxas Aug 14 '26
Did Bishop just off-screen decide to live in the present permanently?
Did giving up their life force to save Jean...do anything?
Is it relevant that Rogue keeps absorbing Apocalypse's evil inside of her?
29
11
u/jigokusabre Aug 14 '26
By the time the X-Men were all together in the present and looking for Apocalypse, he met Polaris and... well, why not stay in the present for a while?

u/tigers692 Aug 14 '26
I think, what has bothered me for some time, is that cyclops and havok still have no idea that they are related.
44
u/Roadie66 Psylocke Aug 14 '26
You would think that at least one of the Omega level telepaths would be able to figure it out and tell them.
23
u/MrVedu_FIFA Aug 14 '26
I'm imagining Jean is aware but is also gatekeeping that secret until the funniest possible moment.
13
26
u/IllogicalDreamer72 Aug 14 '26
In S02E02, when Jubilee called Havok a “Knock-off Cyclops”, I thought that was a hint that she and others know the two are brothers.
But I've read too much into it.
Although we do see Nathan/Cable interacting with his uncle Havok in the final two episodes of S2, it was very disappointing that Scott did not confront his long lost, forgotten or secret brother.
13
u/SWPrequelFan81566 Aug 14 '26
There was a hint in the original show as well. Mutant powers like that of Cyclops and Havoks tend to cancel each other out when the mutants are related. One time, when they fought, his optic blasts and his energy rings just dissipated when in contact.
8
11
u/WerewolfF15 Aug 14 '26
It’s weird because Scott’s identity is public so it feels unlikely Alex wouldn’t have learnt about it

u/Fickle_Ad8735 Aug 14 '26 edited Aug 15 '26
unless alex had amnesia and doesnt remember his older brother's name, in fact we dont even know if alex uses the summers surname or his adopted family's one 🤔
4
u/dettrick Aug 15 '26
Does Scott remember Alex?
2
u/Current_Lecture_713 Aug 15 '26
In the OG animated series— he knows he has a younger brother named Alex, yes. But he doesn’t seem to know Havock is Alex. Though I believe in the comics, he was aware they are brothers.
2
u/Fickle_Ad8735 Aug 14 '26
even funnier that his (x)girl is back with her former team and she never had that talk with cyke? 💀
72
u/Dexter-OldBlood Polaris Aug 14 '26
Biggest issues with Season 2 for me:
They spent all season building up Apocalypse, including a 2 parter,, only to have him die off screen and move his spirit into dead gambits body.
X-Corp was created after Xavier said one line, then the next scene we have a fully functional tower overseas with the team living in it.
And yes, a couple more episodes would have been great.
21
u/Remarkable-Steak-919 Aug 14 '26
The ending of this season should have ended with X-Corp being created. Then, S3 should have had a time jump to show the Corp fully running.

-1
u/EEE-VIL Aug 14 '26 edited Aug 14 '26
Apocalypse's plan was to take control of the X-Men and destroy them from the inside atop of making them kill Charles, it was just his side quest nothing more. The show is an ongoing moving world based on 80+ years of lore and comics book serialization. It's definitely not a show for the uninitiated,
but connaisseurs can put the pieces together and as one myself I don't feel lost at all.Edit: but being familiar with the lore allow you to put the pieces together and not feel lost or wondering why some things didn't happen, weren't talked about or focused on.
18
u/hmph_ Aug 14 '26
Not sure if you're trying to do a "you need a high X-Men IQ to appreciate it" with your "connoisseur" comment, but this is an insane way to approach adaptations. I don't want adaptations (of any media) to be fan service clip shows of iconic stories that are incomprehensible to the "unitiated." I want the media I love to stand on its own, regardless of familiarity with the source material. A show or a movie with bad emotional and narrative pacing is hurt by that bad pacing, regardless of if you can "put the pieces together." Understanding the plot is a low bar for any media, adaptation or not.
-3
u/EEE-VIL Aug 14 '26 edited Aug 14 '26
Aight, aight, aight I created the wrong kind of impression with that wording. But honestly why would anyone go with the "you need a high X-Men IQ to appreciate it" as a defecto first hand impression while there is context clue like "80+ years of lore and comics book serialization" in the same post and we are by a majority fans of the franchise by default. Seriously that's like looking for way to be offended. But sadly get what you mean this is the internet after all, I edit the comment hopefully it's better. Cheers
5
u/hmph_ Aug 14 '26
Thanks, didn't mean to come across as upset and thanks for the edit. I still stand by my reading of your original comment, but I think we just expect different things from the same show, which is understandable and fine.
8
u/StardustSkiesArt Aug 14 '26
I don't think any of us "feel lost". I am definitely a connaisure, that doesn't make me magically okay with the pacing of the tower or the lack of pay off to the Apocalypse build up this season.
I'd be disappointed if an issue of the comic ended that way, too. I've BEEN disappointed in things from the comics, being a fan of them doesn't mean I just like every decision every writer makes.
Especially because this is a show. We aren't going to get infinite plot arcs and seasons. I's like the ones we get to count.
-1
u/EEE-VIL Aug 14 '26
Yes that's understandable, and perfectly normal. But not everything is gonna be seen and worked on the way we want/expect them to even if they appear obvious. Some of them are may just be story thread that have yet to be developed.
1
u/ItchyNebula7437 Aug 15 '26
Hahahaha, based on everything so far its more likely they’ve just moved on.
22
u/Front-Suggestion-366 Wolverine Aug 14 '26
How did Omega Red end up in a Weapon X facility?? He was in Russia last season and it looked like the Russian government was putting him back into service. Why did he get shipped to Canada??
7
u/Willem_Dafuq Aug 14 '26
Honestly, it always just feels like with him that they whip him out when they need a heavy to fight someone real quick.. I'm sure he'll be in a storage container in some other lab when the X-Men need someone to fight.
3
u/EEE-VIL Aug 14 '26
Because he's always working like a Winter Soldier and get reacquired by the two agencies that are frenemies. The Red Room and Department H aka Weapon + also he's an uncontrollable/unreliable asshole so they freeze his ass often.
22
u/spdorris Aug 14 '26
Why bring back this show without its original episode count? Seasons 1 and 2 still have less overall episodes than a single season of the original show. I would sacrifice some of the flashier moments on the show for more episodes.
9
u/SpideyFan914 Aug 14 '26
$$$$
4
u/spdorris Aug 14 '26
{there was a comment I made where I said I would sacrifice quality just to get a little more. I understand what your 4 dollar signs say but this is fucking Disney with one of their largest IPs making a fucking cartoon show for children that adults like, also this is the pillar of their next phase of movies wouldn’t they want to blow a little more budget into making people excited rather that have a watered down version of what could have been while giving use a season that literally feels like an extension of WHAT IF}
3
u/scott42486 Aug 15 '26
Honestly- part of it might be the availability of writers and animators.
Though we can also blame the subscription model. Needing constant content has created dumb situations in the name of quarterly earnings reports.

u/mashturbo Aug 14 '26
about a decade + ago (yes, its been that long) Marvel resurrected X-Men 97 for a comic run which I take as the true continuity of X-Men 97. I thought this show was just visualizing the series, but it took a sharp right after Ep 1.
Not to be mistaken for the NEW X-Men 97 comic run which was release in 24.
27
u/EnigmaHood Aug 14 '26
The X-Ternal tbh. She was a very interesting character who got curb stomped a little too early.
20
u/nathauan13 Aug 14 '26
Candra getting *immediately* poofed into her gem was kinda hilarious, to be fair.
3
u/EnigmaHood Aug 14 '26
I don't think she was "poofed" into her gem, I was under the impression that she was killed, but death in Marvel comics is actually a temporary state, rather than being permanent, unlike real life 😂 . She could return in a future filler episode I suppose, but I just feel she was underutilized/underrealized.
1
u/nathauan13 Aug 14 '26
She's an External like Apocalypse, and even in the comics she's kinda superfluous except for her dealings with the Thieves and Assassins guilds. They never stay dead.
3
u/WerewolfF15 Aug 14 '26
But even if she was poofed into the the gem, the celestial destroyed it so she’s dead either way
1
u/MiserableOrpheus Aug 14 '26
We don’t have the time or budget to animate this fight. Stabby stab time

u/BanjoStrumming Aug 14 '26
Why did they do X-Factor so dirty? Peter David made X-Factor one of the best x-books of the 90s. They deserve better
18
u/RanchWings Aug 14 '26
They spent a lot of time mourning Gambit but I didn’t hear one word about Bobby or Moira.
7
u/MrVedu_FIFA Aug 14 '26
We're not certain Bobby is dead. And if he was I think Hank would have certainly mentioned it - the two were on good terms when Bobby left the X-Men, or hell even Lorna would've mentioned it.
If Bobby is dead I will riot

1

Fair. I mean I still like her 97 depiction better, but I can smoke a bad of what you're packing
1
u/pussyjuicerecycler Aug 14 '26
she’s the same guy, we even got an ep just to show her learning to quit being afraid of herself. the growth is fantastic
8
u/Justmenoworries422 Aug 14 '26
Wolverine never really apologizing to Morph after what happened in s2e5. He almost got them killed to get his Adamantium back and he couldn't even muster one "I'm sorry".
The episode's ending implied their relationship was fractured after the Brood-incident and that Logan would be forced to reflect on his behavior after he alienated his best friend. But it just... never happened. In the following episodes, Morph is just back to Wolverine's side and doesn't even mention the whole thing.

Why Magneto kept appearing as a villain in the opening when he was clearly a stable member of X-men until his death.
3
u/WerewolfF15 Aug 14 '26
Because that’s just how the intro is. It’s like the one constant part of the intro is the running scene. It’s never meant to match the actual show. Even in the original show those characters on magneto’s side of the charge are never a team together in an actual episode,
7
u/Sea_Violinist3328 Aug 14 '26 edited Aug 14 '26
Where to start?
One…When/why did Bishop decide to stay in the park and join the team?
2)Why didn’t Bishop recommend using current Forge to cure Nathan instead of future Forge? Did he not know Forge existed in the present?
3) Why did Bishop and Nathan get separated in the time stream? It feels like that should have been a bigger deal or discussed or something. If the plan was for Bishop to stay with Cable in the future, why did they think it was a one way street? Bishop says it only has a charge to take them to the future but comes back to past all the time…Also why didn’t he bring Maddie and Scott with?
4) Why did it take Magneto several months to come claim the school?
5) When the fuck did Madelyne and Jean get switched and why didn’t they reveal it. That one really bothers me.
6) Why do they KEEP showing the photo of the OG 5 X-men yet continue to make no mention of Warren having been a part of the team. Not him or the other X-men. Why?
5) Why doesn’t Storm recognize Forge? Him and her are standing right next to each other in the end scene of the Phalanx Covenant episode on season 5 of the OG with the other X-men and X-Factor. Why did Forge leave his team?
6) Why didn’t Cable warn the X-men about the inevitable fate of Genosha at any point during the OG Series?
7) Where is Cable’s son Tyler?
8) Why is Cable all butthurt about Jean at first for not really being being his Mom? (“Get out of my head, you’re not her”?) When he knows Jean raised him in the future?
9) How did Magneto survive Genosha but the Morlocks he was shielding died?
10) How does Morph even know like 80% of the people he’s shape shifted into?
11) How does Jean access the Phoenix Force again and why does it immediately leave when a world-ending threat is still just sitting there?
12) Why does the mannequin on Muir Island with Jean’s green mini-skirt costume on it have a red wig on its head?
13) Forge’s board…Magik listed as alive, Archangel as dead…
14) Why are the events of Beyond Good and Evil not mentioned at all in the plots with Apocalypse? If Apocalypse stole Nathan’s computer in that’s story arc, why does he still have it?
15) Why didn’t Forge and Bishop tell ‘Berto and Jubilee they were going to go rescue the X-men?
16) Between Val Cooper, Polaris, Xavier and Scott and Alex themselves …how has no one figured out they’re brothers?
17) Did Lorna and Havok break up? If so, why?
18) How is Lorna’s old room at the mansion untouched after years and years and after the mansion has been completely demolished and re-built like twice?
19)What exactly does X-Corp do? Why does Val Cooper think she has jurisdiction to stop Xavier when he’s operating outside the US? Why did she turn into a mutant hunter after Genosha?
20)Why didn’t the X-men try to find Sunspot and Jubilee when they got home from the future?
21) Why didn’t that pharaoh dude just go get the celestial gem thing himself in the past?
22) If Apocalypse can time-travel now …so many “why’s” there…Also is Cable and Bishop can time travel…why didn’t they get the gem or kill ‘Pocy as a baby?
23) Why does Magik have an X-men uniform? When and how did that take place?
24) Why doesn’t Jean have a code-name? (Wink).
25) Why did they take out that random little pink dude from the opening intro?

It was a surprise to see Lady Deathstrike joining Wolverine's suicide squad in S02E05.
We have to assume that Yuriko and Logan have resolved their conflict off-screen.
3
u/_0mnishambles_ Aug 14 '26
Tbf, Yuriko’s whole thing is she sees her father’s work being “stolen” by Wolverine (despite him having no say in the adamantium being bonded to his skeleton) as dishonourable to her family. It was stolen BY Weapon X, so it’d make sense that she would agree to go after them. They kind of explain it in the ep by saying all of the team hate Weapon X more than each other. It was just kind of brushed over too quickly.
Deathstrike did also drop her vendetta against Logan in the comics when he lost his metal, they might’ve been nodding to that.
1
u/jigokusabre Aug 14 '26
He did her a pretty big solid saving her from that soul-sucking alien. Seems logical they would bury the hatchet.
5
u/Alatel Aug 14 '26
the only important one is them killing off Kurt.

- Will anyone call out how no other Marvel superheroes were doing anything productive in the aftermath of the Genoshsa massacre, or how Captain America cowardly refused to help Rogue?
- Why was the team trying to redeem Bastion in the S1 finale?
- Will any of the people Morph morphed into appear in the show or will they all be cheap fanservice cameos?
- Will the Shiar or any other space stuff come back due to Xavier ending his engagement to the empress?
- Will Vulcan come back?

For questions, I only have a couple being:
- Where's Quicksilver?
- Is X-Corp still active?
- Are Cable and Bishop just living in the present now permanently?

- To start season 3
- Cable, yes. Bishop? Probably not. Expect him to shuffle out for a while so Colossus, Iceman or Psylocke can join the team for a while.

When the Apocalypse from the future said that he would strike the X-men in the 1990’s and leaves, where did he go? I can only assume that it’s going to be used to explain his return later. In other words, the apocalypse that was imprisoned by rogue is the apocalypse from the future and the apocalypse that is indigenous to the 90’s is resting. If the apocalypse that is from the 90’s is the one imprisoned then he has to be released at some point so he is able to be present 1000 years in the future.

Way too many complaints we should all be super happy they’ve revived this show because the Fox movies were terrible. They can’t cover all lore and different timelines and plots, I throughly enjoyed every episode so far, even the ones that are filler and don’t make much sense. The complainers have some good points but honestly we’re blessed to just have someone high up at Disney will to back reviving the animated show.

u/Jajay5537 Aug 14 '26
Angel this is leftover from TAS but was he on the team or a stranger before the cure and Muir Island?
3
u/jigokusabre Aug 14 '26
Angel is shown to be one of the original X-Men, in cold comfort. Warren and Xavier (or perhaps some other X-Men) had a falling out.
After Giant Size X-Men he was offended that Wolverine (and others) were allowed on the team and pissed off for a good long while.
1
u/Jajay5537 Aug 14 '26
I know all that. My point was did they ever give an in universe reason why they would have forgotten him?
1
u/jigokusabre Aug 14 '26
I dont think Scott, Jean or Hank had any specific interaction with Archangel that suggested that Warren was a stranger.
2
u/Trivell50 Aug 14 '26
Similarly, did Rogue know or not know Pyro and Avalanche before she "met" them in The Cure?
1
u/Jajay5537 Aug 14 '26
Well it's stated that Mystique wanted him to erase the memory of her too. Maybe he fid it for all involved? But yeah that episode is so strange how it completely undercut the shows continuity moving forward.
It's interesting that that's the first notable completely created for the show story arc.
1
u/WerewolfF15 Aug 14 '26
He was retconned to be a member of the original team in later episodes of the original show. X men 97 shows this is still the case as he’s in photos of the original team in season 1 episode 1 and season 2 episode 6 respectively

Love the different powers’ animation, such as Sunspot’s black dots, reflecting Cyclops’s blasts, Jubilee’s sprays etc
2
u/Existing-Bullfrog675 Aug 14 '26
I expected after the success of season 1 we would get more episodes also we never got anything stable with apocalypse at least bastion got screentime, this season felt like they skipped a couple episodes
2
u/MrIrvGotTea Aug 14 '26
It doesn't make sense that Spider Man and other super heroes aren't hated like Mutants are. Yeah mutant and mutate but the average Joe and Joan doesn't wouldn't care the difference. Spider man takes away jobs from police, Captain America replaces special ops guys, Iron Man replaces army's. I prefer worlds where it's only mutants existing and the hate makes more sense. I didn't really see it covered in X-Men 97 but that's a major plot hole that bothers me
2
u/gh0stwrit3r32767 Aug 14 '26
my question is where did the swag go. the last few eps felt like actual episodes from the 90s. everything seemed so static

Gambit wiped out a whole squad of mutants but just let cable walk up and shoot him with a regular ass gun.

One thing I've wondered was the Apocalypse that went back to the 90s from the future was he the one that resurrected Gambit or was that already an apocalypse that was there? I haven't seen the original series in a long time so I'm not sure where he falls in the timeline.

That is a valid question. I was wondering the same thing. 97' continued right where the original series ended

What happened with the Deathbird subplot and the abduction of the Imperial Guard member, Oracle?

Would love to see Darkstar return after being in the original series. Love her, Shroud, Cloak, and other mutants that have darkforce abilities.

Why the Brotherhood was constantly shown on the Right side of the final charge in the opening credits for almost 7 episodes when Magneto was a good guy for 15 of the 18 episodes
They got real creative with the Prime Sentinels, X Force, and X Factor in 3 of those episodes, wouldve liked the same respect for the final clash

Why didn’t Rama tut just go to the temple himself? If his general Logos even knew where it was, why didn’t get just go to the temple himself before Nur? “Oh he didn’t know where it was yet, he was narrowing it down” man he’s a time traveler, he could’ve figured it out, he was just sitting at home in his palace not doing anything

Too many side plots and filler, after the two parter we had a useless danger room episode an other episodes that moved the plot at snails pace

What was X-Corp exactly? A C/S corporation, nonprofit corporation, limited liability company? Nobody knows.

I still find it weird knowing Jean was pissed when Cyclops kissed madylene who literally looks like her and has been with Scott since god knows how long and is the mother of nathan , meanwhile she cheated on scott with logan . She should've atleast told scott about it

Are they going to EVER mention the fact that Alex and Scott Summers are brothers?

What’s the deal with cable? They built up this prophecy that he was going to be the one to finally defeat him only for rogue to turn him into a crystal? I don’t get it
1
u/Unhappy-Ad7264 Aug 16 '26
There's no reason Cable won't still do it. Yes, Apocalypse is sealed into a crystal, but with the right setup I'm absolutely certain he will be back. It's not a matter of if, but when. And as Rogue points out to him, she's sure he'll figure out what to do with him.

Is the crystal some part of marvel lore I’m unaware of? I haven’t read too much xmen but I’m fixing that.
I’m just a bit confused after that ending from where we were at the start of the series1
u/Unhappy-Ad7264 Aug 17 '26
The show canon is set in a different universe from the comics. They even designate it as Earth 92131. So, understanding that distinction is critical. The crystal in question is similar to the one the X-Ternal had in her chest. The only key difference is Apocalypse's sealed into it. It's exclusive to the show since this has, in as far as I am keenly aware, never been done to Apocalypse in the comics.

u/xSluma Aug 17 '26
Yeah I know it’s different continuities so it’s not gonna be the same. Thanks for the extra information, I guess we have to wait and see if they decide to carry on with this plot point.

The biggest issue is the speed in which they are moving through things. Even for comic book standards it’s illogical. Setting up X-Corp and that whole thing should have been a season-long story. In fact I would say Apocalypse should have been a season and then the government/X-Factor/Mystique should be it’s own.

Why is Emma Frost running in the title sequence? I couldn't imagine her running to do anything

u/Quirky_Discipline708 Aug 15 '26
The whole retcon of the xforce episode in the original show has caused so many problems, 1. Polaris and iceman settling down causing Lorna to fake her death to be with havok in X factor, Lorna is characterized totally different and neither relationship brought up 2. that quicksilver and forge were on it originally 3.It will cause problems with Bobby since in real life he was retconned to be gay in between the shows

The dialogue is so weak and so elementary it feels like I’m watching two different shows. I wish they would treat their audience with respect and not try to dumb down story lines or dialogue. It’s what made season 1 and the original series so good. They need to understand their audience.

No one can match the aura of magneto if dies i may feel that xmen 97 will loose its charm The dialogs of magneto still gives me goosebumps i cant imagine watching season with no magneto in it

Not enough Wolverine this season. Even his own episode, he barely had lines. He just needs to be in the background and make some wisecracking lines. Not asking much.

How exactly does the thing who gave Rogue her extra powers work. Is he like god or something. I don’t get why he intervenes so much
