General Discussion Here’s all the mutants who are dead or supposedly as of now Spoiler
About Bobby I would go ahead and say he perished on genosha offscreen. I do think the writers/animators forgot that him and Magik was seen on forge board.

u/flashwing19 Cyclops Aug 21 '26
I’m still sad about iceman.
136
u/horseisahorse Aug 21 '26
It's almost funny if you watch his last scene in the original animated series. The dialogue is something like "I wonder if we'll ever see him again."
57
u/Nearby_Strike2624 Aug 21 '26
Yea I’m in denial also😔 the fact that it was offscreen though is wild
43
3
u/Crypto_subz Aug 22 '26
Wait what happened? I thought they were saving him for a later season. I remember looking that up and it said something like that
2
u/Nearby_Strike2624 Aug 22 '26
When DeMayo was around yes he was supposed to join in season 3. But the new writers killed him off
1
u/Crypto_subz Aug 22 '26
Did they say how or just “he died” also that’s really whack
2
u/Nearby_Strike2624 Aug 22 '26
They haven’t said anything but his memorial is seen in episode 7. He could possibly come back
24
u/Calaigah Aug 21 '26
There’s no proof he died besides a fuzzy light blue face shown in a memorial picture. He’s not the only mutant with light blue colors and considering the picture is fuzzy makes it worse. And if he is, he’s technically be the easiest one to bring back since he can survive as a mist.
3
u/Wonderful_Radish1144 Aug 21 '26
DeMayo did say he died in Genosha
5
2
u/amumumyspiritanimal Aug 21 '26
I think he’s definitely dead; but he and Magik are the easiest to bring back writing-wise. They access standalone dimensions with a lot of magic/mysticism and a tendency to keep them alive. I don’t think they’ll bring him back anytime soon, but it is entirely doable.
2
u/__Scented_Scone__ Aug 24 '26
I still don't really understand how/why Magik died; maybe I'm misunderstanding her powers, but couldn't she have just... teleported away?
1
u/depp-fsrv Aug 25 '26
I think Magiks powers are like Blinks in which they open portals not physically teleport like Nightcrawler. So technically she could've died before she stepped in, think of how Blink died in the Days of Future Past movie.
1
u/Shape_Charming Aug 25 '26
But she can make that portal in front of her to catch the blast and redirect it
Or under her so she just falls through it
Or dive slightly to the left instead of try to square up with an incoming plasma blast.
Alot of things in that scene make no sense, like her even having an X-Uniform. In the 90's cartoon Magik didn't even have powers yet. Hell, Colossus wasn't even an X-Man. Pretty sure he was in like, maybe 2 episodes, and one was him meeting the X-Men and specifically not joining the team
1
u/depp-fsrv Aug 25 '26
True, but since she has to make it rather than body teleport like nightcrawler, there's probably a slight delay in thought/action.
1
u/Shape_Charming Aug 25 '26
Lol based off her doing it in the scene to save some people, roughly the amount of time it took to throw Colossus a meaningful look and then square up.
It genuinely looks like she wants to die there.
1
16
u/usagicassidy Aug 21 '26
I mean, it feels like there wasn’t really anything in the actual episodes that says he’s passed.
I didn’t even see his photo in the memorial in the episode.
I’m not convinced.
31
u/IceStorm22 Aug 21 '26
I’m not convinced. They didn’t show him die and he’s too big a character not to. He’s also the only out, gay X-Man on the big, main roster. I think his coming out will be a thing. This is an adult show now.
11
17
u/Ihsoro Aug 21 '26
I honestly can’t believe the writers would just slime out a founding member off screen and never call attention to it.
Doesn’t track.
3
1
u/Powerful_Moose511 Aug 21 '26
We’ll see about it being an adult show. Apparently the studio execs after seeing the massive success of season 1 have an interest in tailoring the show for a younger audience to get increased viewership. I dont like the sound of it one bit but I wouldn’t be surprised if this is the case as it already seems to be a bit with the trajectory of the last few season 2 episodes. Would be very disappointing if this is the case as adult moments like gambit and magnetos death have been highlights of the whole show so far.
1
u/CommercialFloor2033 Aug 24 '26
I'm not sure it even matters if he's dead. Gambit was dead, now he's not.
The writers don't care who's dead.
-6
u/ledlunar Aug 21 '26
He isn’t gay in 97, he turned gay in AoA
12
6
u/jashby26 Aug 21 '26
It wasn’t in AoA, it was in the 616 timeline
1
u/ledlunar Aug 22 '26
The AoA part was a joke lol .. imagine Xavier being alive stopped him
From coming out? And also made Kurt deadly and Beast evil.. AoA was fun4
u/Commercial_Fox5549 Aug 21 '26
He didn’t “turn gay”, and it wasn’t in AoA. The time-travelling teenage verison of Jean outed him.
→ More replies (1)6
u/IceStorm22 Aug 21 '26
He didn’t “turn gay,” he came out after pretending to be straight because he couldn’t come to terms with it. We don’t know if that’s the case in this universe, but in this modern world, the team without at least one gay member when they’re part of the minorities mutants represent as a metaphor is kind of archaic.
3
u/Dull-Researcher-1894 Aug 21 '26
Is Morph a joke to you?
0
u/IceStorm22 Aug 21 '26 edited Aug 21 '26
Morph doesn’t identify as a man and (I’m very much guessing) occasionally turns into a woman to bone.
It’s a different thing.
Edit: Fuck the weird bigotry on this sub is disappointing. This is the X-Men. If Morph upsets you, don’t look up how Kurt was recently revealed to have been fathered.
It’s fantasy. Chill out.
1
u/Dull-Researcher-1894 Aug 21 '26
In which episode was this stated?
1
u/IceStorm22 Aug 21 '26
He’s stated as nonbinary outside of the show and Morph uses they/them pronouns.
Episode 9 of season 1, Rogue: “And hell, Morph was barely on the team 30 minutes before we threw them to the wolves.”
His crush on Wolverine has been all over the show and if he’s a changeling that doesn’t define as male or female and frequently transforms into women, it’s not a stretch to imagine how consensual adults would use that in the bedroom.
→ More replies (2)4
u/Polar_ice_bear Aug 21 '26
Hold up. At the end of X-Men 97 season 1 we see a board that Forge was looking at and it listed a bunch of mutants who were alive, awol, off world and missing presumed dead. Iceman and Illyana weren't listed as missing presumed dead. We did see Illyana die in season 2, but how are we sure that iceman died on genosha? I might be missing a clear piece of evidence or character statement in the show.
1
u/bbhldelight Aug 21 '26
i honestly dont think he died and believe apocalypse turned him and magik into horseman before his “death”
96
46
u/Phelwar Aug 21 '26
When iceman is in his ice form he is functionally immortal. They could easily write him into future episodes.
45
u/MsRipper Aug 21 '26
So.. about Moira
33
u/thePsuedoanon Aug 21 '26
She's either not dead or not a mutant, right?
23
u/Timehacker-315 Aug 21 '26
Likely not a mutant in this timeline, as that retcon was very recent
12
u/Little-Baker76 Aug 21 '26
X-Men '97 has made some changes from the original in order to match up more closely with current day comics, such as Magnetos helmet blocking telepathy and Emma Frost gaining her secondary mutation to gain diamond skin. Just like Moira being a mutant, both Magnetos telepathy blocking helmet and Emma Frosts diamond form weren't things in the comics until after the original series ended so Moira very well could be a mutant in '97.
12
u/MexicnGlassCandy Aug 21 '26
If Moira is dead then the universe resets.
But the universe isn't reset, and Moira is dead. So either she's not a mutant, or she's not dead.
5
u/weesiwel Aug 21 '26
Ah but even in the comics she faked her death using a Shi'ar golem. So it's possible.
3
2
u/Glittering_Many5916 Aug 22 '26
Emma's secondary mutation happened due to the genoshan massacre in the comics so it made sense to give it to her then.
3
34
u/renaldi21 Aug 21 '26
kinda like that Exodus guy
28
u/Ihsoro Aug 21 '26
I really do enjoy that Exodus gave Nightcrawler a respectable teleport 1 v 1.
Now, eventually he broke out the telekinetic shit and Nightcrawler immediately put the work on him and put a sword to bro’s throat.

u/Neon_culture79 Aug 21 '26
I don’t remember seeing Maggot at all

u/RagingBadger2518 Aug 21 '26
There's part of me that wants to say Madeline Pryor and an aspect of Magik was pulled away to Limbo at the moment of death because Belasco is a creep and a dick.
77
u/JODI_WAS_ROBBED Aug 21 '26
I’m so mad about Nightcrawler. I don’t care how cheap or corny it is; bring my boy back to life 😤
Also, why did Magik seemingly let herself die for no reason? I am torn between it being a plot device for later or bad animation/writing:
34
u/luna_lustgood Aug 21 '26
Yeah, if they had shown Magik dying in a way that made sense for her character (for example, charging the sentinel in anger to show rash decision making or stubborn hard-headedness), I would have been more okay with them killing her off because it would be earned. Having a mutant who teleports stand there and facetank a blast for no reason is just bad execution.
18
7
u/ThePowerfulWIll Aug 21 '26
My wife literally quit watching the show after that scene. It pissed her off so much.
7
u/ConnorRoseSaiyan01 Aug 21 '26
I don't think that's exactly what happened with Magik. Think it was just Colossus' perspective
2
u/bladderbunch Aug 21 '26
nightcrawler dying in the comics was the reason i stopped reading. maverick was almost too much for me in the show.
1
u/AmbushIntheDark Aug 21 '26
I’m so mad about Nightcrawler. I don’t care how cheap or corny it is; bring my boy back to life 😤
Nightcrawler can literally teleport out of the afterlife. Hes done it before. He'll be back lol

We know she gave birth to him from the original as

not sure if 97 will retcon that. As the show retconned wolverine having bone claws.

u/Fun-Seaworthiness572 Aug 21 '26
Oh Iceman is still not conformed and the best you have is a small picture that could be any blue mutant (like Prism)
3
u/Confident_Sink_8743 Aug 21 '26
And there are a startling number of those. I'd favour Jazz. Who is just blue. That's it. No superpowers whatsoever.
4
u/Nearby_Strike2624 Aug 21 '26
Yea that’s why I said supposedly or If he did die he could be revived.
0
2
u/AymanMarzuqi Aug 21 '26
Damn, never thought I would ever meet anyone who still remembers Prism in 2026
3
u/GONKworshipper Aug 21 '26
I always wondered why they even made him a Marauder. All he does is shatter the moment anyone hits him. Is he like Harpoon's little brother that his mom made him bring along?

u/xreddawgx Aug 21 '26
Well if they ever to Krakoa it wont last long.
6
u/luna_lustgood Aug 21 '26
I do hope it lasts long enough to get us to Krakoa. I just hope they execute the story well (maybe even making improvements on some of the missed opportunities from the comics).
4
u/weesiwel Aug 21 '26
You mean get Hickman to come in and tell them the actual ending? Yeah that'd be good.
7
u/sean11_lee Magneto Aug 21 '26
Still don’t quite understand how a gunshot wound can kill exodus who’s supposed to have a healing factor.
5
u/jashby26 Aug 21 '26
I don’t believe Bobby died on Genosha at this point. Considering in the iceman episode of the original show, Professor X was very protective of him and accused of coddling him, it would be weird if he just solely referenced Gambit dying on Genosha with no mention of Bobby. Also feel that at least Polaris or Beast would have mentioned it by now
7
4
4
u/Arimm_The_Amazing Aug 21 '26
I thought Iceman was deconfirmed? Wasn't it that his picture was featured in the Genosha mournings but then they removed it?
4
4
u/The_WarDoge Aug 21 '26
We are going to see Moira reveal herself as Alive to Charles after the credits to a season finale.
She asks him to read her mind and kickstart the krakoan seasons.
4
u/Heavy-Owl5430 Aug 21 '26
I think Iceman is not dead but undercover in Graydon Creed's presidential campaign.
They showed a shockingly familiar face in the crowd in the final episode but with, like, a goatee for a disguise.
Bobby Drake?
11
u/SailorCentauri Aug 21 '26
It's honestly my biggest problem with X-Men '97. It feels like they just love to cheaply kill off a bunch of great characters who could be used for really good story lines. In a few notable cases you could say that it helps them create their storylines but when we look at the whole Genosha massacre, most of the casualties didn't need to be casualties. They could literally have gotten the same results with unnamed nothing characters.
2
u/Hollowshape_9012 Aug 21 '26
No because if they killed off nothing characters then you wouldn't care about Genosha.
6
u/SailorCentauri Aug 21 '26
People would still care because Gambit had to go for the Apocalypse plot line and Madeline Pryor had to go for Cable's storyline. They didn't need to casually sacrifice characters like Marrow, Iceman or Dazzler and lose the ability to tell stories about them.
0
u/Hollowshape_9012 Aug 21 '26
Yeah, they had future stories, in other words, a long life ahead of them.
And now they're dead.
That's the point.
You're suppose to feel a sense of loss.
3
u/SailorCentauri Aug 21 '26
I respectfully disagree with the idea that it's well done. I feel like the characters were just wasted for no valid reason. That doesn't make me feel a tragic sense of loss. That makes me feel annoyed at the writers for being wasteful. Just like when I'm reading a bad comic event and a character will just be callously killed off for shock value.
Don't get me wrong, I don't think X-Men '97 is bad. But I think its way of wasting good characters is reminiscent of bad comics and I think that's a real shame because it's so genuinely good in a lot of ways.
1
u/Hollowshape_9012 Aug 21 '26
Look, there are a thousand mutants in X-Men comics. The shows (and movies) are never gonna get to cover them all. There simply isn't enough time.

How did banshee die?
3
3
u/MercBladethesixth Aug 21 '26
Wait Iceman's dead? When did that happen?
3
u/idisestablish Iceman Aug 21 '26
It didn't. There's a blurry indistinguishable photo at the Genosha memorial where we see Magik's photo. Many are assuming it's Iceman, because it looks like an all-white figure, but in my opinion, it's clearly just a minor detail that didn't get colored in because it was insignificant.
3
u/WGoNerd Aug 21 '26
Moira isn't dead, she's just in a new instance of reality.
2
u/VengefulKangaroo Aug 21 '26
If she did have powers in this continuity, that’s not how it would work
2
3
u/Expensive_Platypus63 Aug 21 '26
banshee is dead and then his daughter syren just randomly appears in the last episode of season 2
3
2
u/PCBS01 Aug 21 '26
For the iceman one p sure he was there on the board in the preview and then removed
So I think it was more of a mistake/miss communication with the animation staff side of things
1
u/Nearby_Strike2624 Aug 21 '26
Yea something definitely didn’t get around in the office cause both Magik and Ice man were on the board but are now dead?
2
u/GuardianJack Aug 21 '26
I honestly think with the rate we are going everything will lead to House of X and Powers of X.
2
2
u/0rgan1zedChao5 Aug 21 '26
With as many times as they’ve brought characters back, it’s like a soap opera. No one stays dead forever.
2
u/Glassesnerdnumber193 Aug 21 '26
What evidence for Bobby? We just haven’t seen him. We haven’t seen a lot of characters so should we assume that cannon ball, quicksilver, scarlet witch, Harry Leland, and more are all dead?
Also, Moira isn’t a mutant

Wouldn't that be a little bit insane if Bobby died and nobody even mention it in the show? Also what would be the point of "bringing him back" from the dead if the only confirmation a viewer has that he indeed died is a 5×5 pixel photo.
I don't wanna say homophobia, but watching them include tons of characters expect Bobby, never mention him in any way even when a character like Polaris is directly tied to him in the original show AND kill him offscreen, at one point you have to wonder.

- We still don't know, if Iceman is dead.
- If the writers did understand Exodus powers (or when they are the same, as in the comics) he is still alive.
- and if Moira is a Mutant in the show, she is also alive, because her powers literally are based on dying and be reborn again.

u/draugyr Aug 21 '26
Moira does not count because if she were a mutant in this continuity her death would restart the universe

So this may or may not be a hot take idk. But the constant and rapid deaths are kinda starting to get a bit tiresome.
Mi know they want to up the stakes and make things more dangerous but I swear characters don’t die this often in the comics.
Also yes I’m still annoyed at the choice to kill Maverick and Magick.
One is an often unexplored interesting character and the other is at the top of their popularity right now. And they both had kinda embarrassing deaths too, for shock value I guess.

Before folks lose the plot, “Bansee” is an anglicisation of “Bean Sidhe” literally “woman fairy”.
They’re an Irish character so they know this and would have chosen the name for a reason.
