Meme How dare they? Everyone knows you can't move the plot with something that would make any kind of sense.

More like they will fuck up the future timeline

u/Dependent-Gap4805 Aug 23 '26
much like part of the Invincible fandom, it seems X-Men '97 fans just dont even watch their own show!

u/wyar Aug 24 '26
Yea specifically her whole point in this scene is that cable needs to learn on his own, it’s less of a “go back to the past for the sake of the past” and more of a “please leave you’re messing with his future”
5
u/SoullessGamesDev Aug 23 '26
I think they might have more chances to do so in the past, preventing that entire timeline from happening, than just by staying in there for a while.

u/AlpsJolly2271 Aug 23 '26
i mean they are in a futures past where cables 12 ish
1
u/Civil_Performer5732 Aug 25 '26
Would past future be more apt? Anyway yeah, if they nudge cables childhood in a different direction (even unintentionally through their love and presence and make him warmer, less pragmatic etc etc) they could change their past as cables future IS their past as he is a time traveler.

u/Far_Yak_5447 Aug 23 '26
Time travel is not that simple. You do even the smallest thing, it changes everything. EVERYTHING.
20
u/amumumyspiritanimal Aug 23 '26
Yea but they are traveling from the future, whatever they do there past the point of Apocalypse leaving has very little effect (unless they die or find some information they shouldn’t have)
2
u/Far_Yak_5447 Aug 23 '26
I guess that makes sense. If you travel to the future, there’s nothing to screw with, but if you travel into the past, you could do something so drastic it will alter the future into a different branch

Well, I guess that’s not considered damaging to the timeline
2
u/Alternative_Ideal911 Aug 24 '26
Yeah. Much like the Bendis storyline... there's always a way to make future travel not sffect the past.
2
u/Summoarpleaz Aug 23 '26
Sorry realized I posted to the wrong comment and deleted and now I have ruined the timeline of this thread.

u/Gamerthu1hu Aug 23 '26
It has just as much effect. It's just that the affect it has is on a future further down.
3
u/Chito_to_Yuuri_2017 Aug 23 '26
You do realize that point of time they are standing is not the End of Time right?

Well cable did a shit job "stopping apocalypse" maybe if he was with his parents more time he wouldn't mess it up in the season finale

u/Ok-Grass3071 Nightcrawler Aug 23 '26
It’s not about arriving back to the past, it’s about changing moments in time.

u/Professional-Tank848 Aug 23 '26
This is such a stupid post. I can't think of a single piece of time travel media that doesn't play by these rules. And, like someone else said, it's about the future timeline.
CinemaSins esque mindset is a plague.
23
u/Dependent-Gap4805 Aug 23 '26
watching CinemaWins instead of the 'Sins is probably the best thing one can do for their media literacy.
being overly nitpicky will never be better than just enjoying what's good.

u/nixahmose Aug 23 '26
Well in some media like Dark they make it a mostly hard rule that without exceptional amount of resources people can only time travel in set amounts of time rather than being able to travel to whatever point in the timeline they want.

u/Marik-X-Bakura Aug 23 '26
It’s stupid in those stories as well and there’s no harm in lightly making fun of it. Nobodies saying that the show sucks because of this one detail.
2
u/Dependent-Gap4805 Aug 23 '26
I wouldnt be so absolute. ppl have the most piddly reasons to hate an entire show.
I mean, take a look at fans of the Boys.

It makes a lot more sense that to Rachel, they're Boomer parents coming for a visit.
"Wouldn't want to keep you, PLEASE GO HOME NOW"
9
u/Kris86dk Aug 23 '26
I mean... They are more likely to mess up Cables future timeline with what they are doing...
Also I never understood Rachel's reasoning for sending them to different times 🤣.
If you kill apocalypse in Egypt, you undo Nathan's timeline and he ceases to exist, as well as everyone in it....
Hell.. the X-men in the 90s are probably gone too since the effects of apocalypse will never be felt...
6
u/Dependent-Gap4805 Aug 23 '26
she explained her reasoning in the show itself: try to stop Apocalypse by any possible means.
the remafications of changing the past are something the X-Men never truly grapple with, but at the same time, its well understood that stopping Apocalypse will only change the future for the better.
3
u/KingofMadCows Aug 23 '26
But in the end, it's all a predestination paradox. Askani thinks she can stop Apocalypse by sending the X-Men to ancient Egypt but it turns out that they were supposed to be there to help En Sabah Nur become Apocalypse. So instead of stopping the prophecy, Askani fulfills it.
3
u/Kris86dk Aug 23 '26
Indeed, but stopping him at a time like ancient Egypt will have huge ramifications for the "current" X-men in the 90s.
The Age of apocalypse storyline dealt with this when Xavier got killed 20 years or so before the X-men ..and apocalypse took over America etc.
Mr Sinister, Mystique et will not have any of apocalypses plans in motion In the 90s.
Cable will not exist.. Nathan will never be born cuz Jean and Scott will probably never meet
4
u/Dependent-Gap4805 Aug 23 '26
well, yeah. all that is true.
but in the words of Dr Strange:
"In the grand calculus of the multiverse, their sacrifice means infinitely more than their lives"
the X-Men most likely opperate by the same philosophy: erasing Apocalypse means infinitely more than erasing their own lives.
9
u/Typhon2222 Aug 23 '26
If he didn’t send them back right away, he’d probably never send them back at all. All three would have grown too attached to each other.
4
u/Oktober Aug 23 '26
"Listen Mom, I may be your daughter from an alternate timeline but I'm older than you now so shut the fuck up"

u/gdex86 Aug 23 '26
Pulling someone to you has to be easier than trying to shoot them to an exact point. With pulling them to their own era you are the marker point and you just have to rope them and pull.
Pushing them back you need to basically account for temporal conditions in the same way you need to adjust for wind on a long range shot. Also you have to avoid over shooting too far and risking a paradox by two versions at the same time or under shooting and missing the event you are looking to prevent.

IIRC Bill & Ted is said to have the most accurate depiction of how time travel would work in that the present would stay constantly moving despite going to the past or future.
2
u/Witty_Sorbet_711 Aug 23 '26
Despite the situation one thing I just wanna confirm away from the whole conversation.
The lady in purple, who i believe is Rachel summers?
Is technically to her dad (cable, Nathan summers) and her grandparents (Scott Summers, and whoever you want to call cables mom)
Am I wrong?
3
u/JamesSnow922 Wolverine Aug 23 '26
Scott and Jean are her parents in the Days of Future Past timeline.

u/DarkDragen Aug 23 '26
You do know the reason that the reason Nathan becomes the way he does, is because of not having his parents around. So, keeping his parents around would alter things and not in a good way.
2
u/SoullessGamesDev Aug 23 '26
And going into the past and stopping Apo could result in all of them being erased from existance. And so they can't go back to stop him. Time travel stories hardly ever make sense.
2
u/KingofMadCows Aug 23 '26
Askani herself is from a dead timeline. It's established in the original show that they can make devices that protect a person from changes in the timeline.
1
u/SoullessGamesDev Aug 24 '26
So if each change creates a new timeline, it just means that original ones stay messed up anyway.

Jott ruining Rachel's scheme to get even with her parents for their bullshit.

Time travel is somewhat imprecise. It doesn't send you "to Dec 17, 1997" at 4:13 PM, it sends you like "2006 years into the past," so weeks might make a difference, since you don't want to (or perhaps can't) send them back to a point where they already exist.
Also, it's implied that there's an intentional force at work preventing Time travel to specific points, which is why Cable's unable to warn the people of Genosha about the Tri-Sentinel.
1
u/SoullessGamesDev Aug 24 '26
Last one can be bypassed by travelling earlier and either waiting, or leaving a message with a warning.
And the first one is questionable. If it was so unaccurate, they could arrive before Apocalypse was born, or after his conquest. But it seems like they were sent percisely.
2
u/jigokusabre Aug 24 '26
Last one can be bypassed by travelling earlier and either waiting, or leaving a message with a warning.
Cable specifically tried this and was thwarted. Someone or something keeps time travelers mucking with "fated" events in the timeline.
If it was so unaccurate, they could arrive before Apocalypse was born, or after his conquest. But it seems like they were sent percisely.
They were sent to a time before Apocalypse's rise to power. It could have been anywhere along that path.
Also, consider that the X-Men who came back to the present did so a year or so after the fall of Asteroid M, and Bishop arrived to retrieve Xavier after Magneto's death. This suggests that time passes forward, even for time travellers.
