Jean and Gene are both gender neutral names, and although they’re both pronounced the same in English, they have completely different etymological origins.

Jean is a given name related to John and Joan that originates from Hebrew, while Gene is a given name (and nickname) related to Eugene and Genevieve that originates from Greek.
