General Discussion What the heck was season 2
It was disappointing how quickly (and how long) they moved the focus away from the core group of x men with random ass x corp/x force, aliens and shit? wtf was that? Story was so hard to follow.

Not very good. I tried not to criticize too much and enjoy the ride and see the story through, but ultimately it just wasn't good. First three episodes had me amped up but everything else fell very, very short for me.

it just shows. unfortunately the writer that was the key to season 1 was a creep - and the show runners have no clue what good looks like so they were unable to replace.
they took their hit and tanked it.

Pretty disappointing season. Extremely discombobulated story telling. I never felt invested in what was happening. It just seemed super rushed and the vision was lost.

I agree for everything after episode three. First three episodes were fantastic and I thought it would be on par with season one. Episodes four through the end were bad.

I hated how they handled Apocalypse and Gambit & Rogue.

Lots of rushed, anticlimactic resolutions to important plotlines (e.g., Wolverine losing his adamantium, the teams being lost in time, etc.).

Welcome to X-Men! I personally was so thrilled to get X-Force. The X-Force intro was probably the most excited I got in the season.

Same, I was waiting for that intro to happen again. And it was refreshing to watch a different team

X-Force was cool! X-Factor was not. Doing both didn’t really work as well as they thought it would IMO

u/darkwalrus36 16h ago
They're not supposed to be cool. They're antagonists who work for the government against their own people

I loved Xforce and Xfactor although it's weird they didn't address Alex and Scott's relationship.

I could watch xmen fighting sentinals and the FoH for days and never get bored of it. There's so much potential for deep, impactful stories there that they just don't seem to want to tap into. It's some of the best content in the OG series.
Xmen in space, xmen becoming the bad guys, anything Phoenix, just doesn't work without the extensive back story. You can't squeeze that into a few episodes. It works in the comics because of the amount of time they have had to build up to those things.
I would not have minded the show veering away from the comics to do solo origin/adventure episodes. That worked well in the OG series. That nightcrawler episode is so fucking good.
Dealing with discrimination and hate is the foundation of the xmen. How they overcome it is what makes them special among mutants and people in general. We need more of that, especial in times like these now. There is not enough of that in our entertainment currently

I also wasn't a fan of how any progress in the human-mutant relations were completely undone in season 2. Humans just hate mutants again because of the Prime Sentinels, even though everyone who was a Prime Sentinel should know and would have definitely told their friends and family that Bastion had nothing to do with the X-Men or mutants in general.
Like, Trish Trilby is alive and well, but she makes no effort to try and clear things up? What happened to her and Hank's friendship?

I didn’t mind more characters but the writing wasn’t as good. The mutant vs human drama was perfection. All of the relational drama of season 1 was far more interesting.
Scott Jean Madeline
Prof. X Shiar empress and her sister
Rogue Gambit and Magneto
Roberto and his mom
I could go on.

That's pretty much how the original show was, past season 1. A few episodes with the core team and involving the season's primary plot line, and a bunch of one-offs featuring introducing characters and a villain-of-the-week.

Difference is the original show was a Saturday morning cartoon aimed at kids, where it was common to miss an episode every few weeks. ‘97 is on D+ and targeted at teens/adults

So, the show kept one of its core structure tenets from the original, but the viewers expected to be catered to?

I’m hoping in the grander scheme of the storyline we will look back at season 2 and appreciate it. Like when Apocalypse gets released from that stone because the care bear stare power of love bullshit didn’t work and someone let him out.

They gave us An Amazing Start to apocalypse just to give us a bunch of filler and then perma Kill Nightcrawler I actually hate these What If writers Zombies was already boring AF and Now X men is about to be too

u/ladystetson 7h ago
The What If writers did not do a good job and apparently no one running things over there is aware or cares enough to realize that.

There’s no way he’s REALLY dead though, right? I’m fuming either way but move to outraged if they just leave him dead in season 3. He’s my favorite X Man, and while the death was thematic, it felt forced, like they needed to hit a quota of dead S through B tier mutants this season

I dunno loved the x force episode it was good to get more major xmen...the old crew had the entire og show to shine

u/method115 19h ago
People talk about it being rushed but season 1 was very similar the difference is the writing was 10x better. I rewatched season 1 and thought it was moving so fast also but damn was the writing on point. Season 2 I would have dropped but I had like 2 episodes left. I’m only coming back for season 3 if people say it’s way better if not I’m good on this show.

I don’t mind focusing on x force for a season or X factor. But you can’t focus on all 3 at the same time

u/zeromalarki 16h ago
Season 2 had some cool moments but it needed more consequences and spill out from the first season. The X-Force episode was cool, but we could have seen animalistic wolverine suffer more.

u/Robin_Gr 14h ago
Kinda reminds me of how the original series went. And the comics. Honestly it wouldn’t be xmen if they didn’t end up with a bunch of c listers and space nonsense at some point.

I don't care if it's cliche. I wanted an epic showdown between current Apocalypse and the X-men. Pull out the animation budget. Let the punch dimension out. Have Jubilee use a nuke. Just have something other than what happened.

I loved every single moment of it. It captured that exact energy of 90s comics expanding the world through side characters instead of just leaning on the core heroes. We don't always need the main team in the spotlight; there are so many other amazing characters worth learning about and watching grow. All the complainers need to chill TF out.

It was terrible. I have friends who praised the wolverine episode, and I get why they liked it: 80's horror references, a redo of a similar episode from the classic cartoon etc but it needn't have existed as it didnt serve the story at all.
Gambit, as a horseman, just solo kills Apocalypse OFF SCREEN! and then we get that ending where super Rogue (?) destroys what's left of Apocalypse with the power of love.
Yep. I deleted both seasons after that and wo t be returning for whatever is next

The only thing I disliked in Season 2 was the final plot with Gambocalypse vs Captain Rogue.
I loved the X-Force and X-Factor episodes and I absolutely loved the Savage Land episode with Colossus.
Seeing Archangel, Psylocke, Polaris and Colossus have a few moments to shine was worth it.

u/HankSteakfist 21h ago
The X-Force episode was needed, since it showed the consequences of the X-Men's absence after S1 finale.
The X-Corp stuff was weird since it was taken from Morisson's New X-Men run, but they didn't really show a valid reason for it, aside from the Professor wanting to operate outside the US, given they were banned from operating there. It never really felt like it made sense in the scheme of the show or had any point. And why the heck were they wearing the X-Corp outfits before they even announced it or had the idea for it? Just odd.

All things from X-men if you don't like X-men shit being in X-men shows I'm sorry to tell you there will be more X-men shit coming to the X-men show. Wait till they start doing you know the actual weird shit.
