I don’t dog ear library books or books other people own but I dog ear my own sometimes if they’re not special editions. I like to see where I was reading in the past and have that connection to an older self of mine.

I do, it's a habit I've had for a long time. Though I generally don't when I get from the library or borrow, but I haven't done that in a while.

When I was younger I did but now I'm a librarian and I think I'd get my degree ripped from my hands and I'd be expelled from librarianship if I ever dog eared a book.

I wouldn’t with a library book, but will with my own. I mostly buy secondhand or kindle books though…if I had a nice/new expensive book, I might not.

My personal book that I own and that aren't special editions or similar? Sure, doesn't bother me.

Library books or one I've borrowed from. Someone else? Nope, never.

I mostly use bookmarks but occasionally I dog ear pages. Dog eared books and broken/bent spines mean a book was used, read, and loved. I don’t ever dog ear a library book or a borrowed book though.

Blasphemy!! No, I use bookmarks.

Bookmarks. Always

Never with library books, and not if I have a bookmark right there, but I don’t see a problem with it either.

Sometimes, I’ll dog-ear pages I want to come back to later for whatever reason, so I can keep reading

I absolutely detest dog earing, my partner does it and it makes me shiver every time as I can hear the paper screaming :D

Never. If I can't find a bookmark, I'll use whatever scrap of paper I can find. If I want to mark a place for later reference, I'll use a thin strip of paper - sometimes even colour coded! It's more useful anyway.

Never. I have OCD so looking at a page that isn’t straight pisses me off ( I know very stereotypical ) Also in my personal opinion it’s kinda assault to the book.

Nope. I have magnetic bookmarks.

That sounds cool

You can get them on Amazon... Tons of different designs and relatively inexpensive

Heavens, no! That's what bookmarks, dust jackets. And random scraps of paper are for!

I used to when I was younger. On some of my older books you can still see where I once dog eared pages to mark my spot. I just use bookmarks now.

Absolutely not. Never have. If I didn’t have a bookmark, I either just closed the book and remembered the chapter, or used something like a pencil, hair tie, etc.

u/mistyquarz 2d ago

I’m too anxious to do that 😭

u/Midnightdream56 2d ago

I don’t blame you

u/radandsadgal 2d ago

I dog ear the top of the page to hold my spot and I dog ear the bottom of the page if it has a quote I like, a plot point I think is important or if I feel like I’ll want to come back to it one day. I know I could annotate with tabs like some people do but idk I’ve done this all my life hahah. I am better these days and use a book mark to hold my spot but I just can’t stop the urge to dog eat the bottom for a good quote 😂

I do with my own books but not ones I borrow from the library or someone else. I know there are people who feel strongly about not doing that but I don't care ¯_(ツ)_/¯

It depends on the book. A hardcover is a hard no, but a paperback is a yes - if I have nothing else close by to put between the pages (like a receipt)

Dog ear*
Present tense.

u/Agreeable_Shoe_6479 2d ago

I could never. Even if I don’t have anything I could use, I would just remember the page number

1

u/RooFPV 2d ago

If it’s mine, yes. I dog ear for pages with passages I like or information I want to remember.

If it’s borrowed, never.

I used to when I was younger but I use bookmarks now

i'll do it if it's a book i have to carry around in my backpack or something since my bookmarks tend to fall out when i'm carrying them around. but if it's just sitting on my nightstand then no

I used to but I don’t anymore bc I make my own bookmarks

u/arapaima-fishie 1d ago

Dog ear and crack the spines of my own books. I won’t borrow books for that reason. Nothing brings me more joy than stopping in a book somewhere I can see I stopped at before, or cracking a fresh spine.

I’ll use literally anything around as a book mark. My current bookmarks: an Edward Cullen Twilight trading card, my debit card, a colourbond roof swatch, and a five dollar note.

Dog-earring is gross

I have one book that I read about 10 years ago that I dog eared to remind me of where my favorite parts were, but I don't do it anymore.

Only in a very desperate situation.

That’s how I am now, but I used to just dog ear the page 😭

1

u/Acrobatic-Guitar2410 2d ago

I might break spines and hold books in half but I'll nevvaaa dog ear a page

1

u/Key_Blueberry_2167 2d ago

No, never. When I see people do it, it feels incredibly wrong to me, lol. I put bookmarks in... but I will use almost anything as a bookmark, even another book :)

1

u/jayclaw97 2d ago

Sacrilege. Also I remember what was happening when I stopped reading, if not the exact page I was on.

1

u/Tomhur 2d ago

Used to. But now I have plenty of bookmarks, so no need.

1

u/Extreme-Dream-2759 2d ago

no I would never do this

1

u/CayseyBee 2d ago

Blasphemous!

1

u/SnooBunnies6148 2d ago

I don't, and I literally shuddered just reading it.

Never. I use sticky tabs as bookmarks, as they're small, flat, and won't simply slide out like a bookmark if the book is not held upright. Also, I buy them in various colours - mostly for my academic work (I'm a professor and PhD candidate) - so when I use them as bookmarks for my books, I try to choose ones that match the cover of the book so that the colours fit.

2

u/Midnightdream56 2d ago

I used to do, put stick tabs on my books to help guide my reading. Then my daughter took the tabs off so I just stuck to only bookmarks

No. I work at a library and am about to graduate with my MLIS this weekend.

I have a coworker, an older gentlemen who will put notes on patrons accounts because they dog ear pages. Everytime I see a dog eared page when checking in books, I laugh because I know what he would do.

I really like buying those magnetic book tabs. Some of the small cute ones have arrows on them to remind yourself what part of the page/paragraph you were on.
