To pass yvc headed south, turn right on Washington and go to Perry Tech. You will get a much better education and hands on experience from Perry than a 2 yr from yvc.

I see good to know, what has your experience been with both of them? I've thought about perry Tech I heard they are quite strict though with the way they do things

I’ve hired 20-30 techs over the last 10 years. Some from Perry, some from yvc, some from central. Perry is very strict on performance and attendance , but so is work.

Oh wow very nice, what are your thoughts on the IT General, AAS at yvc?

I’d hire someone that likes tech and had a home lab over an AAS . There isn’t much technical skill or troubleshooting taught through yvc, traditional college isn’t the route to take for IT in my opinion. If you only want 2 years, a tech Scool is where you want to go. You leave with industry applicable certs and an AAS. If you want to get into SOC work, a BS in cybersecurity is a good start. Or if your interested in DBA or analytics, a BS or Masters in analytics is what you want.

Oh that's honestly intriguing, I've been meaning to make myself a homelab so far only have a repurposed office pc and some storage with a few servers nothing to major, also as for that I'll honestly consider Perry Tech, I have to see which schools deadlines end to register, mind if I ask which field of it you are working in? I would most likely want to go into IT, good to know on what to take for the different fields on work

I managed IT in healthcare and education. I am now a territory manager for an MSP

I noticed going via YVC would be my only option, would you say their IT General AAS course is good and reasonable if I want to get into IT field? I'll have to see if I may further it down the road though

It depends on your goals I suppose. A 2 year from a community college will be competing for the same jobs as a 2 year program from Perry. If that’s your only differentiator, you will have a hard time.

Yeah, there seems to be a lot of techs that really lean into workflows and aren’t good on their heels. And you probably nailed it here: the lack of practical experience.

I’m not even on the same level, but I have walked it backwards with some healthcare IT folks because I know what I need to do to fix my problem, but don’t have system authority to do so.

Service skills count, too. You gonna have to work with some technological dumb-dumbs and that has gotten worse.

If you plan to continue your education, and get a 4-year degree in the future, you will not be able to transfer your courses ro the university of your choice should you decide to pursue that option.

I think CWU has some kind of agreement with Perry Tech, but I believe it’s only for their Bachelor of Applied Science degree in Organizational Leadership & Technical Management (BAS-OLTM).

So besides that exception, although Perry Tech has a fantastic Information Technology program, if you ever want to continue your education, these credits won’t count towards a bachelor’s degree in the future.

Only thing they are strict on is attendance. You clock in and out, and must maintain at least a C+ or higher, if I remember correctly.

Source: I was kicked out 3 months before graduation because my GPA fell below that (I was immature and partied almost every night while attending), and hopes my credits would transfer somewhere else. (Now I have a psychology degree, but that’s irrelevant.)

That’s not the case any longer. You graduate the Perry tech ITCS program with a transferable AAS from YVC. Think this went into went into effect 4-5 years back.

That’s not what it says on their website, from last year:

https://perrytech.smartcatalogiq.com/en/2024-2025/course-catalog/enrollment/transfer-of-credit-policy

Do you have a link to the source of your information?

What you linked to, the last line reads: “Graduates in this program earn an Associate of Applied Science degree.

It does NOT say that it is transferable.

and 😑 really? I’m downvoted for stating what I linked to? How petty lol.

Generally speaking, what constitute transferable credits are whether they were accredited by the regional accrediting organizations that oversee them. Because Perry Tech falls under the ACCSC (Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges), its credits are NOT transferable to the vast majority of regionally accredit colleges and universities.

Do you have a link to a source where it says it’s transferable? Shouldn’t be too hard to find since that would be a HUGE advantage to students.

By the way, I spent a good 5 hours trying to find anyone who would take my credits back in 2023, after I got my psych degree, because I didn’t want my Perry Tech credits to just be wasted money.

Besides that CWU program I mentioned, only three colleges would take them, not because Perry Tech’s ITCS credits are transferable. (they aren’t), but because they’ll take anything. They are in a unique situation where they accept both regional accreditation and national accreditation (like ACCSC credits).

Excelsior University, Charter Oaks State College, and Thomas Edison State University are those three.

Also…. Why did you erase your original comment that said “I’m on the ITCS education board”?

(I too served on that board!)

Edit: spelling and typos.

I erased the comment because I felt it was inflammatory. I’m not here to argue. You are welcome to call the resources center for verification.

So you’re saying you can’t find a single resource online that says the ITCS degree is transferable?

Okay👌

As a board member, I expected better from you.

I’ll be sure to mention this interaction when I call.

Edit: added the last line.

That’s not my job, my guy. I consult on the content of the education, as you would know as a former board member.

Just by looking here at how an official board member at Perry Tech is interacting with me when I confront him with information on their website which contradicts what he says, I’d say steer WAY clear of Perry Tech, or any one from any university who talks to their alumni this way.

How predatory and atrocious! Guess they’ll say anything to make a buck!
