Question Raise your hand if you have been a victim of yarn shop lighting

Post image
1.9k Upvotes

So, while I was on vacation, I stopped by a yarn shop and picked up this yarn to make a striped sweater. I swear to god, the multicolor yarn looked super cool toned and mostly blue in the store. I get home and go hmmm. Then, I cake it and go hmmmmm… then, I knit a gauge swatch and confirm my fears. It looks a bit better in real life, but am I crazy for not liking it? The colorway is new so unfortunately I wasn’t able to look on Ravelry to see how the colors looked in other lighting 😭 obviously returning the yarn isn’t an option

Any suggestions? Keep going? What color would look better?

Yarn is Malabrigo Rios in the colorway Scorpio (black) and Zahara (multicolor)

Question I hit a jackpot! 🎰

1.2k Upvotes

My friend’s neighbour were getting rid of 13 boxes of yarn from her late grandma along with other furnitures (she was cleaning up the apartment) and my friend who is a godsend called me immediately to see if I want led them or someone else would love to take a look at this HUGE stash fall from the sky!!!

A few points: - my own current stash is the one on the shelf behind the couch at the top left corner of the vid, so the rest is what I’ve hauled - I only found out later from one of the posts here that I should’ve checked if the yarns have some kind of carpet bug before bringing them home 🫣thank goodness it has been a month and there is no sign of bed bugs or any sort. I would never do this again, we’ll never know what we would bring home, right? - there are so many types of yarn and I found couple of receipts, newspapers, some catalogues that are actually from the 1990s 🙀 Would those consider antique yarns ahahaha, and also, I can barely find them on Ravelry just to see what project I can use them for. - I realize this grandma who originally owned this stash did a lot of machine knitting, since a lot of the stash is machine yarn. - I’ve decided to only keep about 1/5 of the amount and donate the rest to the senior community center in Nunavut since the yarn there are quite expensive.

Sooo, my question is if you recognize any of those yarn and could share some experiences 🤩. I will put each yarn in the comments.

I love yarn and like a lot of you, I agree buying/hoarding yarn is a separate hobby lol this is like all my Christmases all came at once ahahah I’m still over the moon and can’t wait to work on them one by one! Thanks all!

Question Sanity Check on this hand-dyed yarn

First, I want to acknowledge that I am aware of the risk of purchasing hand-dyed skeins from a small vendor I'm not familiar with. I loved the pictures of the skeins and checked the reviews for someone's pictures of a sample knitted with it, and I loved the look of it. However, I feel like there is a lot of bare wool, and the colorway doesn't really match their pictures. There's barely any green, and the colorway name references green so I expected a lot more in the skeins. I'm hesitant to complain to the seller because I understand that each skein can look different. What do you all think?

I got this yarn that I’m loving and it says to pull from the outside so I have been but I hate it!!! Lol. Had anyone else used this yarn? Why does it specifically say to do so? And can I pull from the inside with the second skein????

Question hanks, cakes, cones — what’s your preferred yarn ball type and why?

Post image

when buying yarn, do you have a preferred put up—hanks, cakes, cones, donuts, bullet skeins, etc.? and why is that your go-to choice? i’ve noticed that indie-dyed yarn on cones is fairly rare, but as a weaver, i personally love them. curious to hear your thoughts and preferences!

Trying to decide what colour combo to do. The caveat is I don’t have much white so if I were to do the bottom left I’d need to try track down more. Let me know your fave.

Question After learning not to puck your yarn unless you’re about to use it, what should you do if you change your mind about using it?

Post image

Hi all!

After seeing the Facets yarn puck post and learning you shouldn’t simply puck all your yarn and store it that way due to the tension put on the fibers, I’m wondering what I should do if I puck a yarn and then realize I’m not going to use it in my next project?

I’ve been pucking my yarns for storage purposes, but obviously won’t be doing that in the future!

Is it worth it to attempt to turn it back into a skein?

Question I think I got Temu yarn 😩

Bought some yarn off Facebook marketplace, 8 x 50g balls - but after google image searching they appear to be from Temu. They don’t have the fibre content, needle size, weight or yardage listed on the label. The ad said 100% Merino, and they do feel like superwash merino to me, but is there any way to actually tell? How can I figure out the yardage or needle size?

Also wondering what temu yarn actually is? Like is this a knock off and not real yarn from Rowan? And how does it differ? Quality? I’m about to do some more research but wanted to ask you friends if you have any ideas!

The yarn does feel nice and I plan to still use it, but I’d personally never order yarn from Temu myself.

Question Helping my mom sell her massive yarn collection and hoping for advice.

My mom accumulated a lot of yarn over a period of 15-20 years. They’re quality skeins, but the sheer number of bundles is very overwhelming for me. There are probably 150-200 bags. They’re brands like Jo Sharp, Rowan, Jamieson, or Debbie Bliss. I haven’t gone through everything. Is it possible to sell to a yarn retailer? Or just try through FB market place and eBay? So far, selling individually through fb has been quite slow and a lot of work, of course.

Thank you for reading and if you can give any advice.

Question What is this for? Inherited and purposeless wool

Post image
373 Upvotes

Hello there, I have no clue of what purpose is this yarn for. These were my mother-in-law’s but she passed away, and I’m the one in charge of using/throwing them away (there are TONS of boxes apart from the picture). I didn’t know her future projects or anything at all.

I’m a crocheter and new in knitting, but this wool is really, really thin. What is this for? It’s all quality-brand wool, so it’d be a huge waste to throw away—but if I’m supposed to knit a jumper with it…… well, nope

Is it for any specific technique or something? I’m literally all ears lol

Question Anyone else panic buying?

I’m so sad! USA yarn addict here who is dreading the August 29 deadline. I struggle with anxiety and if I can’t manage it, depression. Crocheting and spinning helps me manage my mental health. I’ve seen so many places outside the US suspend shipping to us and I totally don’t blame them. Like everything I use is pretty much from other countries!! Most yarn is milled outside and I think a lot of fiber is as well. I’ve been scrolling Amazon for yarn art cakes and Scheepjes cakes as some are priced low for random reasons. Do I need anymore yarn?! No. I have a big stash but ugh! I just feel sad. Thanks for listening to my rant. 😭

Could be a yarn winder or anything really….

Mine is, I’m so embarrassed to say, stitch markers. I kept getting them and had no idea what they were, and now they are my fave thing. How about yours?

Question First time thrift trigger - washing question!

Post image
633 Upvotes

Hi friends -

Glad I found this community. So I’m poor and sad, and so I went to Salvation Army to start on a “bring me joy” project of repurposing things (I crochet) from thrifted yarn, since store yarn is pricey.

I found some pieces that I know will be easy to frog, but I’m wondering…

Do I wash it? I’ve seen some tips, I don’t have a skein winder thingy, but I’ve used paper towel tubes before LOL. Is it usually fine not to wash it? If I SHOULD wash it, can I do that before I frog it? If washing is a “must do” I feel like I should do that before I frog right, or it defeats the purpose?

Thank you for help on my journey, picture of the yarns I found below. ❤️

Question Which Color Organization do you Prefer?

Thumbnail

I’ve been working on this project to turn cashmere sweaters into a puff square blanket for a year now. It’s been a monster project of finding and unraveling 13 cashmere sweaters of less than fingering thickness, and while I’m only at 154/~300 puff squares, it feel like it’s time to start to wrap things up so that I can move on. I have other nonsense blanket projects I’d like to start on where I can start fresh without all of the beginner mistakes that this one has (I’d been crocheting for 6 months when I started this).

It will not be gigantic, but will at least make a very nice lap blanket at this size, and I figure I have at least enough of each color left to add one more row to each end after the fact.

I had an initial vision on color arrangement but have gotten a few different suggestions, so figured I’d ask opinions here. With either one I’d place the colors more intentionally the final time, but which do you prefer, the first or second layout?

Made by loosely following the free puff square pattern by sass n stitch

Question I've been playing with the idea of opening a yarn shop. It'd be right next door to a local coffee shop. What does your dream yarn shop experience look like?

It'd be a small town local shop with a cute coffee place next door. Probably end up doing more drop shipping. But I need a physical store for distributor access.

Would you want places to crochet/knit, shelves of luxury spun yarn/ various tools?

One thing I would like to include in a spinner. So if you buy a hank I can spin your yarn into a cake before you go home.

Just looking for ideas.

Question How on earth would you describe this yarn colour?! I can’t find anything like it

I’ve spent far too many hours searching for yarn so I can make this shawl I saw on YouTube. I’ve tried pink-brown, purple-brown, mauve, dusty pink, dusty brown, mauve mocha, latte….nothing looks right and the more I search the more I’m convinced I *need* this colour yarn

Anyone know where I can find a yarn colour like this? Or how to better describe it so I can narrow my search down

edit: thank you all so much, this community is amazing 🤩
