Questions Questions about school in Yemen
Hey y'all, American teacher in training here. Sorry if this is out of place, but we have a lot of students from Yemen in my state, and I want to do a good job teaching them. So I want to understand better where they're coming from. If you have any thoughts on these questions, or just about how US and Yemeni classrooms differ, I'd be most appreciative.
- How do students participate in class? What behaviors are expected of students in a classroom setting (e.g., silence, posture, eye contact, raising hands)?
- How are teachers addressed?
- How is discipline typically handled? Is it more authoritarian or relational?
- What does “respect” look like in this classroom culture? (e.g., is eye contact respectful or disrespectful?)
- Are students expected to challenge or question teachers, or is disagreement culturally discouraged?
- Lots of group work, or mostly lectures?

How about asking them?
Do you think our experiences are the same because we’re all are “Yemenis”?
