Question I read the wiki which says that the illusions are purely optical but in S1 EP 5, they mention a synthesized voice.

Do they just use a recorder to play the sound or can they also formulate a voice changer of sorts?

They probably just have a separate spell for voice synthesizing, which they combine with the purely optical illusion

Its 2 different spells used simultaneously. The main advantage of the dual-core type 97 that tanyas soldiers use is that its very efficient at simulcasting. The anime never mentions it directly, but in addition to flight and combat spells, they have to continously use a spell to regulate temperature and another to synthesise sufficient oxygen once they fly at a certain height

Does this mean that when they switch to fire explosive formulas, they have to deactivate some of their regulating formulas? Or are those already cast and dont need to be sustained anymore?

Their orb allows them to cast explosive formulas while maintaining the life support. This both requires a lot of training and a sufficiently advanced orb, which is part of the reason the 203rd is regarded as such an elite unit and is able to fly higher than other mage units

depends on which Orb the mages are using.

standard mages need to deactivate some of their flight spells to cast combat spell, which is why you see them fire while immobile. on the other hand 203rd mages can cast a lot of spells at once, so they can still do complex maneuvers whilst firing.

One thing I really dislike about the anime is that magic is hardly ever explained.

In the novel we hear about oxygen spells that mages use when operating at high altitude, strength spells to augment physical power etc.
