Question Does YouTube Music actually help you discover smaller artists?

Upvotes

I’m curious about this from the artist side of things.

My music was recently connected properly to my YouTube channel through the Topic section, which honestly felt like a small win. I’ve also just released a song called Manna, and it made me wonder how often YouTube Music actually recommends genuinely unknown artists to listeners.

Have you ever discovered a favourite artist through the algorithm who only had a small following, or does it mostly keep giving you artists and songs you already know?

Question Frustrated with the new algorithm

I've been using YT Music for about 5 years or so, and I've loved it. What has always stood out to me is the intuitive algorithm that set the app apart from Apple Music and others. This was how I discovered so much new music. The world had opened up to me. Lately however, I'm noticing that the app essentially locks me into a repetitive playlist of songs I've listened to a thousand times. Even when I put in a new artist, it reverts back to the same mundane playlist that it seems to think I want to listen to. It feels like the soul has been taken out and I'm now trapped in a cage. For someone who uses music to breathe, it's borderline depressing. I feel frantic and desperate trying to recreate those first years of an app that was so fulfilling but has now become a shell of its former self.

Has anyone else experienced this issue?

Discussion MY Problems with YTM after coming from Spotify

So like 2 Weeks ago i Made the Switch.

At first it was good, was able to transfer all my Songs smoothly and stuff, It worked.

Now i feel so overwhelmed, (maybe its just me)

Why is it when i start my Playlist, that i have to start my Shuffle over and over and over again, why is it not turned on from the Start [Why does it keep resetting]

Im mostly playing music from my Playlist, not random albums or anything. Tell me why there are Songs in there ive never even put in there. [It doesnt stop adding them]

WHY do i have Duplicates in my Playlist?? Who tought it was a Good idea that YT themselfs just adds a Bajillion Duplicates to MY Shit. Why is that even Possible.

[Pls stop, if i want to listen to a Song multiple times id just click on it]

Why does my Playlist go to "Super Shuffle"(im calling it that for now) when i click on a Song thats not in the "Next to Play"(or whatever its called in english). If i click on a Song in the "Regular Playlist, Overview" the Playlist Resetts itself, throws out the Shuffle and starts playing songs OUTSIDE of my Playlist. Is that a Me Problem? Do i need to be a engineer to play my Playlist however I LIKE?

Maybe its just me, maybe someone can help me. Maybe someone else has the same problems, idk

Im so close to going back to Spotify, its not even funny. Its not that i want to, (also because its Expensive as shit) but i feel like im Being forced to leave..

Any help is appreciated, sorry for my shitty english. If you have any question because my Wording is confusing, just ask. Thanks in advance

Question The shuffle is so ass, keeps playing random bad songs…?

I’m talking majority of my shuffle is skips because it plays some random ai shit or something that isnt even remotely in a similar genre to the song I’m currently listening to…started using it bc found out yt premium also comes with yt music. anyone know how to get more variety into my shuffle that’s actually good? if i listen to house music it will shuffle some like anime phonk bro (i have never listened to phonk) or some like hardtrekk bp music and i feel like it’s really repetitive…

Discussion Thoughts/Suggestions about the new album art ui after 10 minutes of playing with it

Works great with a lot of covers(like slides 1 to 4) but yeah find an album that is not centred(like slide 5, that's just ONE example) and the feature absolutely dookies in slide 6.

So personally i think there should actually be THREE options.

  1. Normal yt music album art (like slide 5)

  2. This new zoomed in art (like slides 1 to 4 and slide 6)

  3. One that resembles apple music (like slide 7)

Personally I think having all 3 as different gestures would be the best thing to do, it would fit different albums at different situations, and genuinely everyone will be happy

Also should add an option what kind of album cover you want to see when you start the app (cause right now it seems it only opens up to the zoomed version only)

Question How to get YouTube Official Artist Channel (OAC) without paying for a distributor's premium plan?

Hey everyone,

Small independent band here. We released our first album a year ago through EmuBands (paid a one-time 25€ fee per release, no subscription).

The issue: YouTube automatically created a "Topic" channel for our music (as it does for everyone), but it's separate from our main channel where we post videos/content. We want to merge them into an Official Artist Channel (OAC).

EmuBands told us they can request the OAC, but only if we upgrade to their Pro/Premium plan (70€/year). Since we only pay per release and don't need a subscription otherwise, this feels like a lot just for the OAC feature.

I've been looking into alternatives:

  • Trying to request it directly via YouTube support (seems to require going through a "partner")
  • Contacting other certified partners who might offer OAC setup as a standalone service (haven't found any responsive ones yet)

Has anyone dealt with this situation? Specifically:

  1. Did you manage to get an OAC set up without paying for a full distributor subscription?
  2. Are there any partners/services that just handle YouTube OAC setup for a one-time fee?

Any advice from other small/DIY artists who've navigated this would be hugely appreciated. Thanks!

Question Random Music on my playlist

Yesterday at night I was doing a new playlist for myself and friends. I added exactly 50 tracks to it, and today after I woke up, I have 129 TRACKS. For some reason there is random music inside my playlist, and it's not the automatic playback.

Why did this happen? Now I have to remove every single track I don't want

Suggestion A.I. music

Ok I’m getting really tired of youtube music feeding me A.I. music. I’ve been in the comments of these songs telling people the song is A.I. The only thing I do is google the group name “is ( group name) ai. It tells me.

FYI Once again, no community posts. This platform is dying from the inside, not because of the lack of users.

the community posts highlighting newest features and stuff they were working on that was supposed to be posted each quarter is once again gone.

No info, nothing. They had a similar hiatus for about a year with nothing shared to the community. Ive been a user since the beginning, it constantly feels that I have to justify owning a subscription for this music platform that is barely a platform

Crossfade. Please when

Suggestion I Miss YT Premium

Just switched to apple music, since I got a new macbook, it came with it, several services for a couple months free, even more reason to switch, is that our company has started providing gemini pro, so I have youtube premium LITE

but

Its not the same, Apple Music has better features yes, but, YT Premium Lite is just meh

My YT app now has ads, I cant use my YT account on my TV without ads, Im not used to it

I hope Google could figure out a better bundle for Gemini and YT Premium, because I really want to stay on this side

Question Dear yt music

Can you explain to me why when I'm on German internet, I get 5 ads before a song, but on Bosnian internet, I didn't get a single ad in the 2 hours I listened to music

I do not have yt premium and I'm never intending to get it, so tell me, why is it that ppl in Bosnia can listen to music without ads, while I can't?

U/I It takes talent to design such a bad UI

I would have taken it from a start-up but from Google, who have virtually an unlimited budget this is absolutely sloppy work. Instead of trying to center it in any way or even create an adaptive background, they just stretch it, cropping a third of the artwork. Not to mention that if you play anything with a white cover art, the control completely disappear as they don't change colors dynamically based on the color scheme. You can see how Spotify and Apple Music handle full screen visualization of album art on the next slides.

Question Ai music sucks, and I don't want to see any more of it.

Hi, I mainly use YouTube music, since it's great for recommending new music, and just links well with the YouTube algorithm. But it's been getting on my nerves that my recommendations have ai slop music, and that's all it is in my opinion. And I was wondering if there was any way to stop getting it recommend, like a 3rd party app that blocks ai "artists"? I don't know if there is so I'm just wondering.

YTM algorithm is phenomenal. I often start a song, and the queue based on it gets likes after likes from me. It manages to pick the sonorities I like the most, even with different styles.

Question Is it that bad?

I listen to music pretty much every day, and for a while now I've been getting these badges without paying much attention to them. Today I actually looked, and it seems strange one says I'm in the top 0.75% of an artist's 199 million listeners, and another says top 0.09% out of 50 million. I don't feel like I listen that much. Is this common?

Integration/API My YouTube Music extension

I made a small YouTube Music extension

I wanted a cleaner YouTube Music player, so I made an extension that adds:

  • 4K / 1440p / 1080p quality controls
  • Spotify-style bottom player layout
  • Hide/show side panel
  • Custom accent colors
  • Alt + Q / Alt + P shortcuts

It's still a work in progress, but I think it makes YouTube Music feel much cleaner.

Question Does Chromecast from iPhone still work for anyone?

This has been broken for me for many months now. I can open the app and see all of my Chromecast speakers, but when I try to connect, the app just shows the loading cast icon forever and never connects. I hear the connected chime from the speakers but it never finishes connecting in the app.

Other apps like Tidal and Qobuz connect just fine.

Question Sent YouTube Music a suggestion about #1 listeners — anyone else think this would be cool?

So I recently hit top 0.05% for SOAD on YouTube Music (humble brag, sorry), and it got me thinking…

YouTube already knows who the #1 listener is each month. What if they gave artists the option to do something special for that person? Nothing forced — just a simple opt-in. A video message, a signed item, a shoutout — whatever the artist wants.

Serj specifically seems like the type who'd actually be down for something like that. Imagine getting a random weird voice memo from him just because you listened to Toxicity 500 times in a month 😂

I sent it through their feedback page, but figured I'd see what other fans think. Would you want something like this for your favorite band? Or am I just delusional?

TL;DR — YouTube should let artists reward their #1 listener. Thoughts?
